HT Antenna Comparison - Signal Stick, Diamond SRH770S and Abbree

  • In this video I compare three antennas to see which one, if any, out performs the others. I will be comparing the Signal Stick from Signal Stuff, Diamond SRH770S and the Abbree "Tactical" Antenna. I travel 1/2 mile, 1mile, 2 miles and 5 miles from my home. I also have a QSO with 2 others in the area. The Radios used were the Wouxun KG-UV8E for receive, and I transmitted on the Yaesu FT-70.

    I have been using Abbree antenna's for several years now, and I am very impressed. Definitely will extend your sending range, and will help pick up weak signals. As for length, I have the 18.8 inch Abbree and thats about the longest I will put on my radio. I have the 42 inch one but I attach that to a backpack, then use a short cable to to the radio. Really works well. I also have three Signal Stick antenna's. Good, well made antenna's for closer in work, or if your going through a nearby repeater. And remember height and LOS is every thing.

      I was surprised to hit the next towns repeater with 'strong audio' reports at 16mi on an FT3DE with stock antenna, from a local suburban park with no clear view to the horizon. Hit it just 3-mins before an IRN net and got a US net controller come back - the look on my (non-Ham) friends face at hearing an American voice come back was absolutely priceless!
      Cannot wait to try the abbree _(Or, as I'm calling it... the 'ugly stick')_ ... I do have the Diamond 770S so I'll be taking that out with me later today, for a long walk - along with a folding dual-band travel beam.
      So far I'm loving the FT3 in its NFM 'double-superhet' mode, although it does seem to get swamped easily when in SDR. But, for what it is, it's a superb little radio and such an easy EDC item! Also loving the built in APRS beaconing and the GPS/DF : )
      Next on my purchase list is a 4-band _"altoids tin"_ for some ultra-light SOTA. 'Cus I reckon tiny QRP is where all the real fun is at ; )

    I’m pretty new to GMRS and I went crazy buying a lot of different antennas to test. A mistake I made was buying the wrong frequency. I assumed it was GMRS but most I bought weren’t. Even though they worked they were designed for a different frequency. So people don’t make the rookie mistake like me … make sure it is designed for GMRS frequency 👍

    The Diamond and Abbree are definitely a compromise in terms of their size, but if max performance is your thing or need then they are obviously the way to go. The Signal Stick is basically a good alternative to other 19 inch antennas out there like the Diamond SRH77CA.

    Confused; I would have thought at those distances all antenna’s will be received well. Having a single receive test antenna (brand/model makes no difference) IS fair to all three transmitted antenna’s - real world. The Signal Stick gets good reviews but was I dissatisfied here. I’m unbiased towards the Diamond brand as they perform well for me. Thanks for the video.

    I'd say this was an apples to pickles comparison. The radio at your home qth was inside using a SignalStick, which doesn't set the playing field equal. It would have been better to have a mobile/base station at your home qth with an exterior antenna. Using the signal stick at home from an interior location doesn't really tell me anything. Your elevation change did effect the results and again did not keep all things equal. Then the test from underneath the metal umbrella structure definitely didn't make any sense. The individuals you spoke to appeared to be on mobiles with exterior antennas. Not science, just another UA-cam video without any science.

    • @WJ6FRadio
      @WJ6FRadio  2 роки тому +4

      I will grant you the receiving radio was inside, on a window sill mere inches from the window. No, this is not science. At no time have I ever claimed to be a scientist, nor have I claimed to produce scientific content. Hell, I am not an engineer either! Now, that being said, you are free to pick up a camera and produce a scientific video for all to watch.

    • @baronedipiemonte3990

    • @rustylimbo
      @rustylimbo Рік тому

      Dude, regardless of the "conditions" you raise concerns about above, it was in fact a fair playing field because all "TEST" antennas were used under the same conditions from the same locations (only difference being the antenna). The receiving rig could have a coat hanger for an antenna and it wouldn't have mattered as long as it was the SAME SETUP used to communicate with all the test antennas. This is hardly science, but it is REAL WORLD testing under REAL every day conditions which tell a heck of a lot more than most laboratory tests.
      Thank you WJ6FRadio for taking the time to test and make this video! So what is your verdict though (having all these antennas, which do you use the most and is your favorite 1 year later), I just bought a FT5D and was about to pull the trigger on a Signal Stick, so now I am hesitant and thinking maybe not...
