You may remember Garnet’s story about how Ruby and Sapphire met happened 5,750 years ago. Pearl mentions that Bismuth was lost 5,300 years ago, with Rose saying she lost track of her at the Battle for the Ziggurat.
So the Gem War lasted at least 450 years, from roughly 3720 BC to 3270 BC. The ancient Sumerians were definitely building ziggurats at that time.
While Steven Universe leaves its alternate history of Earth firmly in the background, it’s interesting to think of how centuries of war with a super advanced intergalactic race of godlike beings on both sides of the conflict might have shaped early Human civilization, and might go some way towards explaining the nonchalance of humans towards Gem matters today.

"And look what you've done without me! You've LOST!". I never thought about it, but this difference in perspective between Pearl and Bismuth is insanely good, because Pearl has reiterated a bit in the first two seasons that they won because they protected the earth, while Bismuth believes wholeheartedly that they lost because their friends are dead.

Peridot said it best they didn't win the war they just delayed inevitable. The diamonds clearly had other stuff to do and just left but before they could they corrupted all the gems on earth.

In the most technical sense, they won (although the other comments are right about peridot saying they just delayed the inevitable). The rebellion wasn’t made to free gems from the constraints of the diamond authority, it was chiefly made to protect earth. Many gems however only fought with Rose because she made them think they could be their own gems. Throughout the series it’s clear that the only gems that joined the rebellion for its original cause (protecting earth) were rose, amethyst, and peridot. Garnet just wanted to be herself, pearl wanted to be with rose, lapis wanted to get away from homeworld, bismuth wanted to do her own thing; they all eventually got the memo that the protection of the earth was the original idea, but Rose Amethyst and Peridot were the only ones we know that actually joined the crystal gems BECAUSE of it. Kinda interesting if you think about it

Finally! The start of roses complexity as a character. Not only as a hero without flaws. It's exactly what pearl said, for things she could tell no one she told pearl. But we know that's not exactly true; but even so it marked her as a great leader because she knew what to say and not say. Obviously, it's messed up what she did yo bismuth, but at the time, she figured the battle would've been over, and we don't exactly see Lion in any of the backstory scenes of her. So did/could she have a chance of unbubbling bismuth and telling the truth? It only took approximately 6 years (which is extremely fast for gems) between the 1,000 year battle and the birth of Steven and then ceased to exist. Its a brilliantly told grey characters story showing that Rose isn't this flawless person without failure.

Certainly, "Bismuth" is one of the darkest SU episodes, and the one that asks more moral questions and provides the fewest clear-cut answers.
Firstly, it demonstrated how different Crystal Gems might have different goals that could come into conflict. To Rose Quartz, while Gem self-determination and equality were important goals, they were always secondary to the paramount one of protecting Earth and its lifeforms. Bismuth might have cared about Earth generally, but it's clear from her words that her primary goal was to bring revolutionary societal reform to Homeworld. In a sense she unwittingly mirrored the attitudes of the "uppercrust" Gems she loathes, and like them prefers violence as the means to resolve problems.
When fans first heard about the upcoming "Bismuth" episode, there was debate on why Bismuth (the name was guessed long before from the shape of her gemstone) was kept secretly bubbled in Lion's pocket dimension. I posted that there might be reasons for this, but none that are good for either Rose Quartz, or Bismuth, or both.

Yes, the Diamonds may be evil, but unless you can get enough Homeworld Gems to your side you're going to always be badly outnumbered and looked on without sympathy.
As demonstrated, the Breaking Point was an execution device, not a battlefield weapon or a WMD. Using it on poofed Gems would only make the average Gem (to say nothing of the "uppercrusts") want to fight the cruel and evil Crystal Gems even harder.

    • @dominickdixson5523
      @dominickdixson5523 Рік тому +2

@@baraxor So what, you want them to give the Gems a slap on the wrist and say "don't do that again"? Also I'd argue the opposite, Killing off the Gems would set the tone for those on the diamond side because for them they're literally fighting a war with no casualties or risk on their side. Once they see people are dying, while yes many will fight harder, just as many will start to question if this war is worth their life.
To borrow a quote from Shunsui from Bleach "Only amateurs would give up a victory for the sake of a code of honor. Once war breaks out, both side are evil".

She's anything but evil. Honestly, after coming to terms with my other genetic defaults. (Defective digestion and underdeveloped thyroid) I can relate to Amethyst on a deeper level. There are certain parts of yourself you can grow and it does get better, but you also felt held back by your differences to others. However once you get past the initial "Awkward transitional stage" of meeting someone new or trying something new, It's very freeing to do stuff that makes you feel 'normal'. Even if it's something as simple as joking with friends but the biggest thing I think people can take from this show. I would like to illustrate in a poem.
    "Let your roots stay firm
but reach your leaves to the stars
taking what you need, to be who you are
Leave pile up upon the ground,
leaving roots hidden, nowhere to be found
left looking around, without a whisper of sound
But never forget those roots down below
The bugs and termites, that tend to go,
And eat at fiber of your roots, so small
Preventing more leaves, beginning your fall
So know your roots and how they behave
Don't deny your passions and throw them away
Embrace the past, the root rot, the scars
Because all that matters, is to know who you are!"
Thank you for reading my randomly SU/personal shit inspired, piece of poetry. I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I did writing it.

Bismuth is without a doubt my favourite episode of the series. Bismuth herself is such a great character, a passionate warrior and pure blooded revolutionary who would do anything to protect her comrades and their dream, even if it means moral compromises. I love that they didn't just take the easy way out and say that she was evil all along, she's not evil, she's just wrong. While I refuse to believe that no homeworld soldiers were shattered during the war, using weapons that shatter instantaneously is a surefire way to lose the moral high ground just as quickly. It's a genuine moral dilemma, both sides have weight but one is the clear answer. Also this episode first sows the seeds of doubt regarding Rose's character, I don't know how far ahead you guys are so I won't say too much. All I can say is, saints don't exist. That fight between Bismuth and Steven is one of my favourite one on one duels in the series. It's perfectly in line with both of their characters. Steven doesn't want to hurt Bismuth so he mostly just dodges her attacks, only retaliating when he genuinely has to. And Bismuth is out for blood, the way she sees things all of this could have been avoided if Rose had just used the breaking point. She's fighting Steven to avenge all her comrades who she believes died because Rose took the moral high ground. In the end, even though Bismuth isn't evil she has to be poofed, she isn't going to change, at least not before killing Steven. And that line "you really are better than her" gives me chills every time. I think that is the biggest underlying theme of Steven Universe, being better than your heroes. I'll wait until it becomes more important to bring it up again but more people should be talking about this, I can't be the first to notice it
