      Hi Roberto.
      *So, you're basically saying here...that if you wanna grow your personal brand, you gotta be a [youtube] educator?*
      Because, @5:10 you're basically saying no one will initiate a specific search for you [your brand]. Only if you create value, like creating a tutorial such as "why should you hire a logo designer"- then that's the way you will draw attention/viewers/clients.
      But, what if you're, say, a photographer? Not an educator? You are not gonna create videos teaching folks how to shoot.
      How can you still establish yourself as an authority, and not in a cognitive/informative way, but rather in a creative/stylistic way? [as in "this guy really knows how to create good images! we should hire him for our next campaign"].

    I feel like I just lack a sufficient level of self-awareness and passion to develop a personal brand and honestly I lack a depth of knowledge in anything to really demonstrate my value in any field. It's a good point that everyone starts at zero, that's pretty much where I am (even though I should be much farther ahead at my age), but I've always been too scattered to really grow in a particular direction.

    • @thefutur
      @thefutur  7 років тому +2

      cxa011500 that's being brutally honest but I think you need to give yourself more credit. We often forget the gifts we have cause what we know doesn't seem special to us. How about you try helping someone? You'll be surprised how much you know.

    In case Roberto doesn't see this....
    Seems like Roberto basically said here...that *if you wanna grow your personal brand, you gotta be a [youtube] educator?*
    Because, @5:10 he's basically saying no one will initiate a specific search for you [your brand]. Only if you create value, like creating a tutorial such as "why should you hire a logo designer"- then that's the way you will draw attention/viewers/clients.

    How can you still establish yourself as an authority, and not in a cognitive/informative way, but rather in a creative/stylistic way? [as in "this guy really knows how to create good images! we should hire him for our next campaign"]. Just seemed like Roberto's way is to go his way+the FUTUR's way. To grow your brand by being online educators.
    And that is not for everyone. Not everyone teaches. Not everyone likes to be filmed...

  • @pedroalmeida6185
    @pedroalmeida6185 9 років тому

    Hi guys,
    Roberto Blake I believe there's a moment You co-oporate and the moment You "compete" with other graphic designers.
    The moment You start as a graphic designer, is the time You have to help yourself more than the others, build a brand, spread your work, get clients, recomendations...etc. The moment You have all that (for example, Roberto Blake) You can "worry" about helping and co-oporate with other designers.
    Depending of the person who is a graphic designer, if You show them a work You did You will get hundreads of different opinions. And if You are smart enought You will not ask for their opinion, because in the end of the day, is the client who You have to please.

    • @RobertoBlake
      @RobertoBlake 9 років тому +5

      So when I talk about "competing" I'm both being literal (in my case) and speaking to a mentality. The mentality of someone who "competes" is very different than someone who doesn't. For theme everything is comparative analysis instead of being self aware. One of the advantages I have is that I'm a bit neurotic and it makes me hyper self-aware and I leverage that.
      For example. I know that I can hold and communicate a train of though for an extend period of time, which means I can talk too much, which is terrible in social situations, but great for consulting in the context of going deep in response to a question and demonstrate that you're listening. It also means that generating content by talking on camera or by writing an article using voice dictation is super easy for me.
      A Competitive person rather than doing a self audit that way would look at what someone else has done in terms of a format for developing their content and just try to one up them.
      To put this in a design context, instead of bad mouthing another designer, I would focus on the value I create and also educating my client about what they should know, to help them screen designers, and also hold myself to the standard I'm telling them they should use. This empowers the client and lets me leverage a Unique Selling Position without having to compete with anyone but myself.
      Here is another example. I don't compete on price. Whenever a client tells me someone can do it cheaper I counter with:
      "I don't price match. The reason I can't offer you their rate is because I'm offering you my experience not just as a designer, but someone with a background in Marketing as well as Creative Direction. I'm not just an executioner, I'm going to help you understand things and take a considerable amount of time to make sure you are getting not just what you want but what you need. I'm going to justify every pixel to you and to myself. If the other person is offering you the same at their rate, you should absolutely go with them. My other clients pay this rate, because that is what they value the experience of working with me at."
      The idea that you have to "arrive" at a point before you can worry about helping other people is something that I think a lot of young people and not so young people have twisted. The cooperative mentality is an advantage from the gate. There is only so much work out there, and at some point. Designers I've helped have given me referrals or overflow work that filled my pipeline because we have a good relationship. Networking with them has given me access to people who eventually became my clients.
      There is no point at which building good relationships and helping people in your industry is something to put on the "back burner" for "after you're successful". Which may very well be the best kept secret in this industry...

    I took a branding class in college, and I struggled with it. I have the technical skill, but it was hard for me to come up with a simple design that really grasped what the company was about. Now as a professional I shy away from branding when people ask. I really want to strengthen my branding skills, because that's what most people want. I figured I would start with myself for practice. What I bring to the table is adaptability and a blend of skills (Illustration, Graphic Design, Comic Art, Typography) Any tips for taking the core values of my brand, and coming up with a solid symbol?

    Really good advice, awesome plans and fission for a graphic designer to start building and finding your place. My problem with building a personal brand is getting something creative that feels good enough. I start with a concept (logo, slogan, choice of witch way to go), but then it does not feel good enough. As if im much more strict or anal about what i do or design for myself as a brand, than for some one else (NOT that i do not care for what i give others!). As if i get blind/ blank when it comes to myself! Any tips will be appreciated. Thanks for your effort and time on making the videos. Kind regards, JPDiamond.

      Jean-Pierre Nel designing for yourself is always the hardest. This is why companies hire consultants to help them. It comes from not being objective. One way to solve that is to write down your brand attributes, define your customers and then work from there. It's an objective goal vs. a subjective one. Hope that helps.

      The best equipment is the one you already own. If you have an iPhone shoot on that. Use an app called Filmic ($10) which will give you more manual controls over exposure, focus, etc... Get a small phone adaptor and mount it to a tripod or stand to keep the video stable. The key will be to get good audio. I suggest using the earbuds you already own, or purchasing a separate lapel mic you can buy on Amazon for $10. Of course, higher quality mics will give you better results, but if you're on a budget this will work just fine. Use lighting from a window and you should be set.
      I hope this is the question are you were asking, if not, ask again and I'll try to answer it.

    Great efforts!
    My suggestion is to divide videos into 15 mins each episode(more views, more subject related.) The anime thing is the entertaining part, not the informative part. Exposing yourself do pull audience closer, but in the circumstances of this video, I don't think it's very efficient. Maybe develop a new session that's more audience interactive, like streaming?Or You could throw out a design task each week, ask people to send your works, present,-give feedback-pose value). But in the educating part, establish the conversations closely around the title, stay on track.
    As you mentioned that when presenting our portfolio, we need to restrict the quantity to focus on quality. I feel your strategies is to have a general timeline that's divided into different sessions, with similar focus and some freestyling. However, I don't see clear structure through editing(a huge advantage not yet employed). Maybe establish subtopic under "Building a Personal Brand": 1)why you talk about it[connect to the audience group]. 2)define[what is branding]. 3)why is it important[appeal to audience's desire and fear, more income, etc.] 4)play recorded conversation with Roberto Blake with edited highlights. 5)...
    I have more thoughts on hosts style that I could add later when I'm free.
    Keep up the good work, I really appreciate the designer insight. All I was trying to provide constructive feedback from my pov, hope they are helpful.

I really like your videos, keep up the good work I'll stay informed of your moves. so my answers to your questions, Jose is more obnoxious i think... xD kidding :D you guys are amazing! and i think my challenges so now is I still haven't found my identity, like what really sets me apart from other artists/ designer and another thing is money and time i think, still don't have the budget to buy the essentials i need in creating stuff. and there still so much like i'm somewhat in the middle of being and introvert/extrovert (depends on the day lol) and lastly when i start something i tend to not stick to it (i realize it with myself just now) ei just want to share my thoughts hehe thanks for reading if your reading!

    I know this is over a year old, but I wanted to respond to your question! I think one of the main things that gets in my way in terms of creating a personal brand online is that "the internet is forever" whereas I personally am always changing. @Roberto Blake and @The Skool Network, how do you create a public personal brand when you're still figuring out who you are?

    • @thefutur
      @thefutur  8 років тому +1

      Don't let the idea of being perfect prevent you from being good. The reality is that we are all growing and evolving. Enroll people in your process as you grow. Just start and everything will be okay.

    This video was really good and very helpful. While I was listening I thought about what I really want to do. Even though I've been taking graphic design courses lately. The thing I really enjoy doing the most is drawing, especially drawing jazz musicians and music themes.That's what I really want to do and I'm passionate about Jazz music. And I want to be able to help people, especially like me (baby boomers) realize their dreams.
    How much would you charge to personally help me find my brand and other things that will help me find my audience and clients? My budget is rather small and I know you can't always help me for free. Thank you for your help

      Paul, I'd recommend writing down your objectives and committing to them. Give yourself permission to change later, but stick to a deadline. Honestly, if clients didn't give us deadline, we'd still be trying to finish up our project. The same goes for doing work for yourself.
      You can also try posting each phase publicly and making a commitment and then announcing to your friends. they'll hold you accountable.

In my portfolio I share the process on all my projects when possible, but do not have copy to help narrarate. ***** Thanks for the clarification. Sean Wes recently built his social media empire and gives insights to help others extremely well. I follow him and despite the confidence and insights I've gained, I guess I'm still lying to myself that I am not ready yet. I keep pushing back because I fear I don't have the right tools to start filming myself which is totally not true. Anyone with a smart phone is well equipped to take the first step. Or I don't have an audience that would care to listen yet. I like how Roberto referenced Vaynerchuk by saying we all start at zero. That first step is a huge scary one though.

      Part of it is surrounding yourself with people who will encourage and inspire you. You also have to truly have a desire to provide something of value, then you won't be afraid as much, you will be more concerned with what you stand to accomplish.

    Really cool topic guys and thanks for introducing us to Roberto Blake!
    I've started to share my design process a few month ago, writting my journal and I learn a lot everyday: structure my thoughts, go beyond the immediate experience, be more relevant...
    Before doing that, I had to ask myself a lot of questions: "who am I?", "what do I have to offer to others?", "what makes me different?"... and it wasn't easy to answer! ;)
    It's true you have to be patient, it's really hard to make people interact with your content right away, you have to challenge yourself a lot. Your "personal brand" can't be done in one day!
    If you guys have 5 minutes, I would love to exchange and get your advices: www.theseventeenth.com/blog and in any case, keep it up!

    • @thefutur
      @thefutur  8 років тому +2

      Roberto's great. I think he gets a pass because it's the quality of content vs. how things look. right?

    • @chronicfish
      @chronicfish 8 років тому +3

      Roberto is great! no doubts about it! It's just ..as a designer.. "how things look" is just as important as the "quality of content" . I truly don't want to sound like a troll...but when my eyes are "wandering" and the only thing I can concentrate on is the bedsheets and stationary in the background.. it does Roberto disjustice and the "quality content" he is putting out there. Just my thoughts. Great channel btw!
