@Daniel Sullivan... As a retired military officer, then I KNOW that you KNOW everything President Ronald Reagan did to support our armed forces and personnel (General Dozier), and citizens abroad (Leon Klinghoffer), and he put Khadaffi (Libya) back in his box. He wouldn't have merely jerked a few chains for a decade in Iraq and Afghanistan... And not for a second do I deride our service men and women who served over there (I'm a proud Gulf War era veteran NCO). They weren't allowed to "win"... Thanks for serving !🇺🇲
Daniel, thank you for your service. And your respect for Mr Reagan is admirable. I must, however, respectfully dispute your notion that “he got the hostages released.” It was President Carter whose efforts, right up to the last minute, effected their release. The mullahs in Iran were determined to humiliate the US, and Mr Carter, by holding them past the election and the inauguration. (To them, we were “The Great Satan.”) Mr Carter resisted demands to bomb Teheran, thereby sacrificing the hostages, just to appear tough. Their safety was his priority. Furthermore, too many (not necessarily you) harbour the fantasy that “this never would have happened under Reagan,” or “Iran was so scared of him.” Well, there were hostages held in Lebanon - during the Reagan term - for longer periods than the Iran hostages. One CIA chief was tortured to death. And that suicide bomber in Beirut had no qualms about taking out 241 Marines! There are certain things beyond the control of any president. But we can always learn from the past. I must add, though, don’t get me started on the case of the “October Surprise”! Again, thank you for your Navy service, and take care.
@@The_Sword_King If that were true, they’d have been released right after the election, well before the inauguration. And what retribution was at hand - sending Oliver North to visit the Ayatollah with a birthday cake and an autographed Bible? Trading arms for hostages (aka The Iran-Contra Affair)? The so-called “October Surprise” case involved the Reagan campaign secretly requesting the Iranians to hold the hostages until after the election. Armaments and frozen Iranian funds were already promised. This sleazy effort was led by the sleazy William Casey, later Reagan’s CIA chief. Sorry, but all of this tarnishes Mr Reagan’s halo just a tad!
