In the final scenes, where she returned to the tree as promised, it had a dream-like quality. On the battlefield where he was surrounded and clutching the jade pendant between his teeth, I felt like he had died and his return to the tree was in spirit rather than in body. That's my take on it all. I'm actually kind of wanting to get my hands on the book, but I can't figure out where to buy the English translation of it is. If anyone knows, feel free to post.

That's the true ending but as you can tell from all these comments, A LOT of people can't handle a tragically beautiful love story so the director had to cater to this weak hearted crowd to give the "happy ending"
@@wanderingNprobablylost No, the book ended this way... happy ending.. with children, also the brothers didn't die in book. Why can there only be sad endings to be 'real'? And truly, there's a ton of people who love to cry and watch tragic stories also..But I actually don't see those people made fun of tho. interesting... Also, explain how people need it be a sad ending to be real, as if people aren't saved during war time, but they can excuse ALL the rest of the unrealistic things throughout the drama.. Flying from roof tops, rising from being buried alive, one man fighting 8 to 20 people in scenes, but later it's unrealistic for him to do so? And so much more.
@@itsmeiamb the way the movie was going: he was surrounded and his ghost came back, the most likely outcome is that he died, AND that's OK. But look through this comment section and witness how aversive that is to a lot of people. The point is to be comfortable with both good and bad. It apparently struck a nerve with you.
My friend and I just finished watching this on Netflix and I am sorry to say that I feel like I wasted all of the 40 episodes building up a rapport with Duke Su and Jiang Li. So it was a shock to see the final episode end with what appeared to be his final moments facing down a fresh arrival of enemy troops. I guess it must be a cultural thing that here in the United States, we prefer a "happy ending" where the good people are together and facing a happy and peaceful life together. This is the second Chinese drama that I've seen and the second one that ends with the death of one of the two main leads. I doubt seriously that there will be a third. Even as I write this I am very bitter about the death of so many good people. I understand that life does not care if you are good or bad, but I watch these shows for entertainment, not reality. If I want reality, I simply turn on the news and get my fill of hatred and evil.
Netflix doesn't have the special episode 40.5 that shows their happy married life and with their daughter. The book it was taken from has a happy ending. I agree that many Asian dramas have liked the aesthetic of the sad ending, but I do think that is a trend that is beginning to change. I also like to argue with people that say it's more realistic, because it's just as realistic that people survive tragic situations and go on to live full lives.
I get your pain dude. I love when dramas, any type of asian drama, have good happy endings. I REALLY enjoyed this drama but I didn't felt like I wasted my time watching it, the ending could've been interpreted in many ways, it seems more like an open ending than a hard one. When it was the scene with brushing her hair, it felt like to me that she missed him and wanted him to be there. And in the end, he technically returned back to her, but his death scene was never shown so it is very vague as to what happened. However, it is said there's an extra episode that Netflix didn't post (that's where I watched it) with their happy ending and they have a kid! If it makes you feel better, he doesn't die in the end of the novel/book and help comes to him during the battle. Him and Fangfei ends up having a kid. Don't be too angry, their canon ending is in the book and the drama's ending is like open for different interpretations. Many dramas just wanna be different and make it ambiguous instead of having a concrete ending, don't know why they do that but don't beat yourself up over it. So, to correct you, Duke Su didn't really die, but the ending is super vague and ambiguous
So the entire journey of love and tribulation doesn't matter, unless there's a "happy ending"? That's an emotionally shallow way to approach it, because you can drown in depth.
@@wanderingNprobablylost Some people have enough sadness or tribulation in their lives that they don't want it in entertainment. That's okay. It doesn't mean they don't understand 'depth' in stories.
This series The Double 墨雨云间 is an absolute masterpiece 🎊🎉 the actors, producer Yu Zheng and screenwriter Ren Ya Nan this is truly a fabulous series 💯. Loved it ❤❤❤
The original ending for the drama (not the novel) had Xiao Heng dying at the end, after being out numbered by the enemy. A there is a clip on twitter that shows where he was struck with an arrow after putting the pendant in his mouth, then he dies. It was Wang Xing Yue who told the director to give us a happy ending, hence the 5 minute clip of their life after marriage.
Where can you see the clip? I've read about an "Epilogue" online but Viki doesn't provide it. Maybe Netflix will when it gets to the ending. Otherwise it's clear he dies. He's alone on the battlefield with pendant in his mouth, prepared to die.

Hey, are you okay. It's just a drama. You don't need to get that worked up over it. The drama was well made and worth it to watch. The lead actors had so much chemistry that it was sizzling. The combination of the actors, the settings, the music, the wind, the falling petals, flowy robes and ribbons, the slow motion, and the many close-ups, all elevated this drama to something magical. So what if there were barely any kiss scenes and I have developed a loathing for big candles that sit right next to people and obscure things. I got to say that their closeness and intimacy made me feel like a voyeur witnessing such private and heartfelt moments. About the bodyguards dying...it was a war. By all accounts, they were overwhelmed by the Dai army. It would have been unrealistic to expect no casualty from our guys. The scene portrays the personal loss for our main lead, rather than just random soldiers we don't know. Always expect death when going to war. I'm just glad Xiao Heng came back alive. The rest of it just life. See...I'm not worked up. At all
@@victoriahillsfusion He did come back at the very end of the last episode. And they also released a 5-minute special episode showing snippets of their lives together even 8 years into their marriage. They even wind up having a kid together. It has been two months since the last episode of this drama, and I'm still pissed. The deaths of his trusty bodyguards and loyal friends should not have occurred in my humble opinion.
They didn't say it was other reality. It focused on their married life with their daughter and "celebrating" their 8th wedding anniversary. I read a comment telling that in the book the ending is happy, so maybe they followed the book for the special episode
I just finished this drama and honestly, it is probably one of the best chinese dramas I've seen. Before this, I've only realistically watched ONE chinese drama fully and that one was very good but this one surpasses that one. I don't really watch chinese dramas as the episodes are wayy too long for me but I'm glad I stayed through on this one. The plot was way too good and I love how the romance is very careful and gradual, not cheesy and in your face. I rate this show a 9.5/10 when it comes to dramas and I haven't rated any drama a 10 yet. I wish the ending could've been more detailed because it could've been interpreted very differently with different people. But nonetheless, the last episode made me tear up a lot and I LOVE this couple dynamic. It's honestly a shame that Shen Yurong decided to go the wrong path till the end and delude himself that he has Fangfei in his best interest. I didn't expect him to off himself in the end, he honestly had so many chances to do good, he brought that upon himself. Princess Wanning is ALSO delusional and her character was sad but interesting, the whole point of her being in the story was that she only cared about herself and was basically fighting OVER A MAN bc of her past. She messed with the wrong woman and caused her own death by going for someone she can't have. It proves a good point how some women will go CRAZY over men and that leads them to despair. I could talk about so many other characters but those two just made my blood boil so much. All in all, I LOVEE the actress playing Fangfei, she was a perfect role for this. She very much embodied Fangfei/Jiang Li and did her role super well; she deserves to be in historical dramas, they suit her a lot. Duke Su's actor was also amazing, both deserved the main leads 100%. And I loved Duke Su's two guards as well, a shame that their lives were lost for the greater good :( I'm glad the ending was technically a good ending.
Its so clear to me this final! Look the clothes and the jade’s pendant. It was to Make reference to Xiao Heng! As he promissed to her that he would return exactly that time. Happy end! 🥲
I found the ending confusing and upsetting after watching such a captivating drama it should have had a happy ending, killing off the bodyguards was heartbreaking, thank goodness for the epilogue. I wish the show had including this scene it would have made it so much more impactful and leaving the viewers happy, eagerly awaiting the next drama.
This is defines one of the best c-dramas made ....since i waded through some vary poor /medioce/ sexist dramas..i can say with confidence .. I love it whem they make a drama where the characters all actually make sense and have brains ... And the story is done so well.that even if there were loopholes you couldn't care less.. If at all i was dissapointed..personally...was that killing both Wen Ji and Lu ji was unnecessary...atleast spare one ... And again personal.opinion ..the A-Li was such a well written character that i wish someone a little younger ( her character is young and the actress looks older) and a tad better ? ..shes done a good job but 9/10 ..vs ..most of the other characters where i would say casting was perfect
The last scene was so unnecessary. They could’ve end it after the consummation marriage. 😂. I swear my heart couldn’t take it if he doesn’t come back alive. I don’t care what anyone say about their age gap. I don’t see it and they have the most amazing chemistry ❤. This is an amazing drama and all the cast act the heck out of their role. Beautifully done 👍
Oh no, if no conclusive ending I am going to stop watching it, I hate these open endings, I am on episode 22 which will be my last one, no more, not wasting my time with sad endings
No I saw all the episodes. No daughter. And a dream of return at the end. Just a dream. Because of the war, war is not a dream. I’m very furious because I lost 40x 45 minutes of my life for this drama for nothing than tears.
Love is even more beautiful when it's tragic. The real ending is him dying. The moment of his death and day dreaming is when his spirit visits her to comb her hair. She knows that he's gone at that moment and still choose to wait for him. This is the true ending. The alternate where he ride back on a horse is designed for weak hearted audiences who want a fairy tale ending, but it's also the reason they never show his face because the director doesn't really believe in it. It's all a dream for the "happy ending" crowd.
Nope, why do you spread this lie? The book has the happy ending shown in the special episode. 'Love is more beautiful when it's tragic?' I can't even respond to how twisted that sounds.
@@wanderingNprobablylost I felt a need to reply because I see you going down the list and telling everyone what the 'real' ending was, but you are wrong. So, I'm unclear why you would do that. That's what I don't get .
@@itsmeiamb because there's beauty in both happy ending and tragic ending, plus I heard the original ending had him dead but someone wanted a happy ending so they forced the director to insinuated that he's alive. It'd been perfect when his ghost visited her and she waits alone underneath the blossoming tree. To each their own.
@@wanderingNprobablylost sorry if I am repeating here, I am not sure I posted my reply. I heard that the director wanted a sad ending also. But don't forget, the director was making a decision going against the original happy ending in the book. And when you say someone 'forced' him to change into a happy ending ( we weren't there), if so, wasn't he just changing it back to what it's supposed to be? Perhaps some wise person said 'hey, should we go against what the author intended?) Because these two escaped countless near deaths situations throughout the drama, why is only the last one, one you can't accept? And the director then did not 'insinuate' he was alive, but showed he was and got married and had a child, just like the original source. The fact that you keep pushing that it was a dream and a tragic ending is, it seems, something you wanted to see . I guess you think it would be more beautiful. But it just doesn't make it true, based on the book and the drama which both had a happy ending. Also, I don't find beauty in tragedy, if that isn't clear:) there's no beauty in losing someone you love, or brutality, war, loss... if you paint it with an artist's brush, it doesn't make it beautiful to me.

The double episode 41 in Dramacool , happy ending :)
Why did Luo Ji and Wen Ji died, they were so good toward their master Xiao Heng.
Loved it ❤❤❤
What epic scenes in this drama❤❤❤❤❤❤ worth watching this series.
This drama is excellent in a whole … excellent performances, script, scenery, photography…. ❤❤❤❤❤
@@O.R.MellingYouku App has it but you have to purchase that last extra scene (happy ending) in order to watch it. I'm a VIP member on that App, i subscribed and pay because ep 4 onwards is VIP only then on that 40.5 i still.have to pay 😅 thats why i turn to YT and search for it 😅
@@nyangtries2645 wait so there is an extra mini episode of their ending? does this mean they have a truly happy ending and he didn't die? The ending in the drama could've been interpreted as good that he didn't die and returned to her or "bad" where he dies. It's been 2 months now, do I need to pay to see that or can I find it on here. I just finished this drama and would like to see that extra episode
MASTERPIECE "" OMG evrything is perfectly done from the caracters, colors of the clothes i mean i can go on the ending is sad but hopeful ❤thank u for this series
At Netflix there is no special end... just that vivid scene between A DREAM OR REALITY
The book must be stupid if the guards were killed. I’m being driven from these dramas. They start out great then end up awful.
Indeed irritating. Why the self destruction. So much potential and then nada. K-drama to the emotional pdsd rescue.
@@alice33 I don't think the brothers were killed in the book. Blame the director for that bad choice and the ambiguous way he shot the ending.. For me, the book is canon, and I"m going with that:)
I loved that ending. Life in those times was tragic! Beautiful dream like ending. Perfect. Extra scene was just nonsense!!
I think it was done poorly in showing you why it could have happened that way. If you read the comments the book said help arrived and that's why he survived. OTH, I am always amused when people want to talk about something that isn't realistic in a drama like this when they spend their time fly to roof tops.
just finished watching this drama damn too good the last ep had me in tears goosebumps the male lead damnn soo handsome the jade pendant scene perfect chemistry the female lead awesome whole cast just awesome the last episode was damnn perfect🥰😍😍😍loved every ep of this drama

Where was this kid scene?
So just say it another writers n directors screwed up another Chinese drama that was destined for greatness. Same with The Journey ruined it.
true. and now before i watch Cdrama i make sure that they are not the directors. No matter how good the plot is if they will be director I rather save myself from hearthache due to bad ending TBH😅
Where can I find the bonus special ending episode
Does anyone know where I can watch the epilogue in the US? It isn’t on Netflix.
(I don’t have TikTok either)
Where can we find this 40.5 episode?
Where to watch the additional story?
So far so good, I’m watching up to 24eps , interesting & every one acting well !
Is there an episode or episodes after Episode 40???
And if yes, where can I find them?
xiao heng is dead or alive?? Please dear writers you have to clearly show if you want the character to be dead or live. Why put an open ending.
He's alive ..riding back to her as promised with her jade good luck charm
He's dead, the exact moment is his day dreaming on the battlefield and his spirit visiting her to comb her hair. The "happy ending" is for this shallow crowd of audience
Why open ending i hate open ending most 😭😭😭😭😭
Me too. It's like the story is still left hanging. And for some, the possibility that the leading actor is dead is there. Good thing I haven't watched this yet. Was waiting for the last episode to decide whether it is worth watching.
@@atozot09 no there is one more extra episode i didn't see it clearly before, search in the Google it's episode 40.5 it's a happy ending but there was no English subtitles so i didn't understand clearly what they was talking about but i don't think in the extra episode they explained how did he came back but not sure I have to wait for eng subtitles but anyway it was a happy ending
Oh! Ok. I will look for it before deciding to binge watch the entire series. I did manage to watch some clips and episodes but not the whole series as I fear the leading actor/actress might die or both of them would as Cdrama do tend to have this fascination of having one or both leading roles dying. 😂🤣😂🤣
Thank you for recommending it though. I will surely do some digging up on the Google search engine. 😁😁😁
@@atozot09you’re like me tho. I love watching wuxia/historical c drama but need to know the ending first before watching cause usually are sad ending. Netflix don have especial episode of the double
Just finished the drama. Very nice! But haven't seen the scene with the child???🤔
it is now available on Youku app but you have to pay extra for the scene with the child. But then before that you have to have VIP access to watch ep 4 onwards 😅
Very disappointed in the ending
Can't watch episode 23 onwards as there is no English subtitles.
why is the episode of doughter not show on the main movie
Many hated the ending of Untamed, and received a lot of criticism. So I guess this is a fix. I have seen many Chinese dramas doing this.
Yes, Untamed which also had a happy ( and spicy) ending in the book.. But they didn't make a special episode and we all know why.

He never returned. It was a losing battle...
This was just her imagination, like when she saw her friend Jiang Li coming to say goodbye to her. RIP
I don't like this Cdrama never give great dramas a sound clear ending,is irritating ,cosmos times it makes the drama a one time watch as it courts a third of the satisfaction in the end.
At all
But according to this preview, ml went to war again and it seems like he won't make it back
@@victoriahillsfusion He did come back at the very end of the last episode. And they also released a 5-minute special episode showing snippets of their lives together even 8 years into their marriage. They even wind up having a kid together. Xiao Heng is shown to be just as smitten as ever with his wife
It has been two months since the last episode of this drama, and I'm still pissed. The deaths of his trusty bodyguards and loyal friends should not have occurred in my humble opinion.
This drama is superb !
Bagus bgt ceritanya.
I don't like this ending
I didn't like the ending of the Double. They should've shown more on Duke Su returning from battle.
Epic drama loved it . Congratulations to all teams .
Horrible final scene! I loved the drama, but absolutely hated it. Also hated that the two bodyguards also die.
The double is a good watch
Well, I hope they didn't send their so called ending to alternate reality, that is what they do ,super crap, when will cdrama ever get it right.
They didn't say it was other reality. It focused on their married life with their daughter and "celebrating" their 8th wedding anniversary. I read a comment telling that in the book the ending is happy, so maybe they followed the book for the special episode
I really like this drama. The princess is really good actress.
You are right but, she is crazy as hell.
Y cant they just give that small ending
They all gave to kill our favorite why it make no sense
Ahh amo la historia quería más desarrollo pero aun así la amo.
WHERE TO WATCH THE EXTRA ENDING? 😭😭😭😭
Its so clear to me this final! Look the clothes and the jade’s pendant. It was to Make reference to Xiao Heng! As he promissed to her that he would return exactly that time. Happy end! 🥲
It's a messenger to deliver the news of his death and to return the pendant to her. Thats why his face is never shown

I don't like the ending 😢
❤️🔥

@@tatiemei6947 have you watched the extra episode?
@@itsmeiamb you don't have to respond. Maybe you'll get it one day, maybe you'll never get it, and that's perfectly OK!
