Deck Comparison: J.K. Waite and Rider Tarot

  • In 1975, fortune teller Alexandria Mokusei-ou (Jupiter King) launched his career as a tarot deck creator by working with illustrator Seigan Nakajima to create a Waite-based tarot deck: the first Waite tarot deck to be sold widely throughout Japan under the publisher Tairiku Shobou. Today, the West knows this deck as the J.K. Waite or the Waite-J.K. deck, and it is a lovely example full of bright jewel tones, dark blues, and lots of pinks and purples. But it tweaks some of the expected Rider Tarot imagery, so why not put the two against each other for a better look?

I watched this video yesterday, and I'm rewatching today to torture myself a little bit. What a fantastic treasure the JK Waite is, I want it so bad but I doubt it's ever gonna happen. Thank you for sharing this video so I can vicariously enjoy this deck through it 💕

The Wheel of Fortune card features Anubis on the right coming up the wheel and the figure on the left going down could be Pricus who in Greek Mythology is the Ruler of Time or Ox-Head who in Chinese mythology is the Guardian of the Underworld. Such a beautiful deck.

So few people outside Japan seem to know about the JK, but as best as I can tell, it was the first Japanese tarot deck...and the illustrator did a stunning job.

Im so in love with my J.K. Tarot. Its so awesome. I love that you call the X of Swords the Overkill Card, that cracked me up! Do you have the facsimile or a copy of the Thompson Leng deck. I need to do a side by side some day, but Ive often wondered recently how much it influenced the J.K. Waite. I love hearing all your thoughts on the cards and imagery. Thank you for sharing!

No, I don't have a copy of Thompson Leng. I heard you make that comparison on that 3 Fat Readers video where you talked about wishlist decks and I meant to track down a copy...but then other decks got in the way.

@@melissazupan6026 The OG decks are ludicrously hard to find, and even more ludicrously priced.... buuuut www.tarotcollectibles.com/ used to offer a great facsimile, however I cant seem to find it since they updated their site. May have to drop them a line.

I really do enjoy looking at decks alongside each other, and with ones that are as close at the J.K. Waite and Rider Tarot, it becomes a bit of a fun game to find the differences.

I‘m new to your channel and usually not a RWS fan - but I really enjoy your content and comparisons. Your Pam D is stunning! I‘m one of those „the RWS has garish colors“ kinda guy - but the vintage Pam D has such subtle tones and depths. /// I‘m commenting on this video, because the two strange creatures on the Wheel (X) are from the Oswald Wirth Tarot, and depict Hermanubis (right) and Typhon (left). Just wanted to let you know. /// Keep up the good job and looking forward to your future stuff!

I love the JK Waite but never been lucky enough to source a copy.... the hunt continues. Do you have the Edith Waite?
Great side by side Melissa 🙏🏼

Well, Dustin and Brant both recently got copies...so you're next on my list! If I find one, I'll definitely let you know. There are a couple on Japanese Mercari right now, but they're $240-$260. I assume you'd like to stay under $100?

I do not have an Edith Waite. I can't even recall the last time I even saw an Edith Waite. She's a rare bird.

The Spanish word for boot. LOL, sorry...I'm in a silly mood. B.O.T.A. stands for Builders of the Adytum. It was a religious organization founded in 1922 by Paul Foster Case, and it's sort of his revision of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. Case wanted to correct what he perceived as "blinds" that A.E. Waite put into his tarot to obscure Golden Dawn teachings, so he put out his own deck through the B.O.T.A. Today, it's just called the B.O.T.A. tarot deck. For years, it was sold as black and white and you were encouraged to color it yourself according to Case's descriptions as part of the process for learning tarot. I thought you could get colored versions now, but I'm struggling to find them at the moment. The majors combine different things from Marseilles and RWS, and the minors are pips. There have been a couple different versions of the art with very minor differences. The current version of the deck is on Amazon: www.amazon.com/TAROT-Builders-Adytum-Highlights-Tarot/dp/B0025TWQME

It’s a long out of print Japanese deck. It was never sold internationally. Your best bet of finding one is to stalk Yahoo Auctions Japan and Mercari Japan. If you aren’t in Japan you’ll have to use a proxy buying service like White Rabbit or Buyee.

Mendy from The Artistry of Tarot has a copy she's looking to rehome. Here's her channel page. She'll be listing it on eBay tomorrow.
