Flawless transfer; no VHS head-switching noise here. Transferred from a well cared for film reel.
    Thank you for these episodes.

That was heart wrenching. The acting by Barney Phillips and the man who played Peggy Webber's husband was very moving. Thank you for uploading this.

I know the radio episode this is a remake of is going around, but I think this is the first time the tv episode turned up! Another great find!

Jack Webb often used radio episodes for his tv Series, both the 1950's one and the 1960's one.

One of this long running TV series that had a meaning. Seems like the four in the kitchen area of the apartment had a strong feeling of sorrow of a person who experienced the tragedy of losing a baby, then, trying to replace the deep hurt of loss.

Peggy is still around approaching 100. The head of a radio theatre group in California.
She played Jack's mother on the Dragnet radio show.

And, when she played Joe Friday's mother, she was only in her late 20s. She could pull off any role.

@@michaelcase8574 Wouldn't it be ironic if, after playing a senior citizen on radio, when she was in her 20s, she would play a young adult when she is 99?

@tonypanzarella9387 I wouldn't put anything past her! She is fearless!
What they thought older people sounded like back then, sounds anything but like old people today sound like.
In her old age, she sounds nothing like her old person's voice back in those earlier days.

This episode has a lot of personal meaning to me, and I NEEDED it tonight. This is the first time I have ever watched it.
When I was born, in 1951, my mother had already had 2 miscarriages and a “nervous breakdown”.
She was 32 years old when I finally came along. In 1951, that was very old to be a 1st time mother.
Mine was a difficult birth, and I only weighed 5 pounds, tiny for a live birth back then.
But, if I had been any heavier, I would not have survived. She might not have either.
(Do you know the name of the physician who attended your birth? I do. I was named after him.
Well, both of my grandfathers were also named John. She told me the actual truth years later.)
I was “just right”, and would be her only child.
She did not live to collect Social Security.
Cancer of the Uterus took her 3 weeks before her 64th birthday, almost 40 years ago.
    Ironic, isn’t it?

At 1:20, Joe Friday states, "It was Thursday, November 28th". That would have been the fourth Thursday of November, meaning, it was Thanksgiving (and, the latest date on which Thanksgiving can fall ... in the US, of course). It is surprising that they didn't play up the angle that the child was missing on a traditional family holiday.

Originally telecast on January 31, 1952. Rebroadcast in syndication as "BADGE 714" from 1953 through 1962.
Adapted from the November 9, 1950 radio episode.
Yes, Barney Phillips was chosen to replace the late Barton Yarborough- as "Sergeant Ed Jacobs"- on radio *and* TV in January 1952.......but was eventually dropped because he sounded too much like Jack Webb. Ironically, Herb Ellis {"Sergeant Olivas"} replaced HIM as the original "Officer Frank Smith" in the fall of '52.

Sad story but. They didn't need nice soft guitar to soothe anyone. She took a baby! They had orphanages. All they had to do was apply! THEY spent ZERO amount of time showing us the Mother reunited with HER adorable Baby!!! Get Real.😊 She never says "I'm Sorry". And "Oh just one more thing" as Columbo would say. Mothers give birth in Alaska where it very cold for the mother and the baby...they don't all come to the south...😊

Can you imagine, anyone expecting an award, for a missing baby? People have no shame! Why would anyone expect a reward? Imagine, a young couple, missing their child, being so worried, but worse, is a woman, who is so self centered, that she kidnaps someone else's newborn, no matter what she has been through!
