I used to have a water spray bottle for when they stole treats and such, but they learned "oh it's just water, I don't care" but if I tell em off and mildly scold them with an angry tone "bad kitty, you know you can't do that" they hunker down like "I'm sorry please forgive me." With cats you can't just think "oh it's just a cat they didn't mean it" they're maniacal little bastards, and will absolutely manipulate you. They're smart.
