What Went Wrong for the Cardinals in 2024? (w/ Bernie Miklasz) | 149

  • The Cardinals season is over after being swept by the Toronto Blue Jays unceremoniously to fall under .500 again. The hitting with RISP has vanished again, and it's time for major changes in St. Louis. What went wrong for the team in 2024? Was it the lack of production from Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado? Was it Oli Marmol and John Mozeliak's poor decision making? Was the roster just not constructed to make a run at the playoffs? We're joined by Bernie Miklasz to discuss all these questions and more.

    When they signed the 3 free agent pitchers, Mo said that these 3 pitchers want to play here. Well, if you read between the lines there seems to be some players who don’t want to come to St. Louis. That used to not be.

    Most of the decent hitters were the same when Shildt was the manager and they were in the post all 4 years and played great defense. I blame the manager more than anyone else.

    Blame the coaches for trying to make everyone hit it over the wall. Who cares if they strike out at record level.

    You guys talk about how many of the players changed their hitting approach, but Bernie doesn’t think the coaches are accountable. I can see if one guy has changed, but if so many have, the question is why all of them. It looks too much like a pattern. Too many of them take called strikes over the heart of the plate. Why? Is someone telling them to make the pitcher prove he can throw a strike before they swing? Does Goldschmidt really think he is a better hitter in a 0-1 count?

    • @tellerbrook1
      @tellerbrook1 10 днів тому +1

      I mean taking strike 1 is a good approach. You want to see the spin and what the fastball looks like. Ambushing pitchers only works a small percentage of the time. Look at Goldie’s pinch hit in today’s game against the Blue Jays ambushed the fists pitch and GIDP. Wasted it. Not very many hitters can ambush strike 1. 😂

    • @georgesouthwick7000
      @georgesouthwick7000 10 днів тому +1

      @@tellerbrook1Maybe you are correct, but it seems like more often than not, that first pitch strike they take is the most hitable pitch they will see in the entire at bat. But, in spite of this, it isn’t taking that first pitch strike that irritates me, it is the stuff outside and in the dirt.they seem to love swinging at. I guess nobody ever told them that pitches 6 inches outside and in the dirt aren’t strikes.

    • @cwg44
      @cwg44 10 днів тому

      @george agree with you, both of you, there. The first strike/3-0 take might be a good approach, but if you are looking to build pitch count and wait for pitches, WHY ARE THEY SWINGING AT SO MUCH OUTSIDE JUNK. Makes no sense.

    • @Boi-xc4dk
      @Boi-xc4dk 10 днів тому

      At some point you have to hold the coaches accountable even if you don’t think it’s their fault.

    • @georgesouthwick7000
      @georgesouthwick7000 10 днів тому

      @@Boi-xc4dkThe fact is, at the MLB level coaches can make suggestions. It is up to the players to either take the advice or reject it. The coach really doesn’t have much leverage, if any. If it comes down to dispute between a player who has a multi-year, multi-million dollar contract, and a hitting coach, the team is going to support the player, and the players know this.
      As far as the situation with the Cardinals offense is concerned, we don’t really know if the coach is giving bad advice, or if he is giving good advice and the players aren’t taking it. Either way, it is pretty obvious it isn’t working.

    Just to clarify my previous question / comment regarding Nootbar.
    I wasn't suggesting to play Scott and Siani both because of Noot's performance.
    I was saying, if the Cardinals have packed it in for the season, and are going to play the young guys the last few weeks. Then play Walker, Scott and Siani and let Noot have summer vacation early. He doesn't need the extra playing time. Which was part of the conversation of the Cards sending Scott back to AAA and playing Siani. Same goes for Goldy, Arenado, Donovan, etc. They don't need to play anymore this season.

  • @charleshorton8533

    It’s at the 35 minute mark when Bernie starts talking about Jeff Luhnow that the conversation addresses the fundamental failure that interferes and prevents the Cardinals from succeeding. It’s leadership. Always has and always will be. So many analysts do not recognize the seriously damaging effects of poor management. (Study the American Civil War and note the continued failure of the Union Army, despite overwhelming advantages, because Lincoln had such poor leadership). Luhnow provided the vision and leadership, then took those same skills to Houston. It’s leadership. Always has and always will be.

    Pressure? It comes from inconsistent performance. I think the vets (Goldy & Arenado) are pushing because whether or nor they admit it, they're time is running out?. Another thing about Burlson & Winn. I was looking up their AB's. Both are almost doubling their AB and probably out of gas. 162 is a grind. Donovan needs to rediscover himself. Is Gorman suffering the same fate as Moises Gomez? I dunno.

    Great point on the spending and the pitching staff. The Cardinals seem to take a micro view and are afraid to get poor value on individual contracts but aren’t they getting poor value in the aggregate? Bring in a front of the rotation arm and a tent-pole bat then fill the gaps with young players.

    Exceptional podcast gentlemen! Enjoyed every minute of it. A couple thoughts after listening to you.... The empty stadium demands change, lots of change, this off-season. My prediction is that Moe won't be in the PoBO chair, and Oli and his top coaches won't be in the dugout. And Goldy, Lynn, and Gibson will not be back either. Bloom will take over and rebuild the St Louis Cardinals. Anything short of all of this happening will result in an empty Busch Stadium in 2025. The fans have spoken and the DeWitts hear them loud and clear.

    My question is why were the Cardinals better under Larussa compared to every other manager? The 2011 Cardinals despite the set backs with injuries the lack of pitching etc.) they still made a hell of a run and they just excelled very well. However now it seems that they have no idea what they are doing this year. They completely look lost and I say that for everybody on the roster.

  • @CalCrider
    @CalCrider 10 днів тому

    Ideally the rotation next year would be like:
    Sonny Gray
    Max Fried
    Eric Fedde
    Andre Pallante
    Kyle Gibson(maybe) but I’d like to see either McGreevy, Graceffo or Kloffenstein. But in a perfect world Mikolas gets traded or DFA’d and Gibson and Lynn don’t get picked up. Matz and Libby stay bullpen arms and robberse and hence eventually get looks. I’m not so sure signing gray and trading for Fedde were good moves at this point

    The Cardinals spend enough on payroll. What do they have? 200 million? Look how much of that is waste. Matz. Mikolas. Goldy (this year). Lynn. Thats what 60-70 million? The cardinals have ample pitchers in the minors who could have given them what Lynn gave them. They got nothing out of Matz for the whole contract. And who thought extending Mikolas was a good idea?

    What went wrong is the Cardinals don’t have batters that can hit line drives, drive in runs, hit to the opposite field to advance runners or understand situational hitting. They’re clueless and want to only hit HRs which is boring baseball.

  • @MariposaEdits

    Im just saying other than Wynn the whole teams hitting is bad and im sorry but it starts at the top. Coaching staff is responsible for all players and their ability to hit the ball. If they cannot fix him either find someone who can or move to the next guy. Dragging people around is what has cost us so much of this team. Why is the AAA staff able to fix and help people but our guys in the pros seemingly can't.

    • @georgesouthwick7000
      @georgesouthwick7000 10 днів тому

      In the case of some of the younger players, coaching may be a factor, but Arenado and Goldschmidt should know how to hit. Fans want to blame Turner Ward, and I’m not saying he is blameless, but I would remind everyone that Turner Ward was the hitting coach in 2022 when they won the NL Central, winning 93 games and had 5 players with an OPS of .700 or higher. At some point the players have to be held accountable as well as the coaches. There seems to be a tendency on the part of fans to give all the credit to the players when things go right and blame the manager and coaches when things go wrong. This attitude is both inaccurate and unfair.
