  • In this tutorial I'm recording a part of the song "Matador", by Garland Jeffreys, on a Tascam 414.
    Part 1: • Tascam 414 tutorial / ...
    Part 2: • Tascam 414 tutorial / ...
    Part 3: • Tascam 414 tutorial / ...
    Part 1 covers recording of 4 tracks:
    Tr. 1 - Drum loop out of Garageband
    Tr. 2 - Acoustic guitar, with an old Sennheiser MD421
    Tr. 3 - Bass guitar, DI
    Tr. 4 - Lead vocal, with the MD421
    Part 2 contains a simple mixdown, with a Lexicon MPX500 reverb connected to the Effect Send 1.
    Part 3 is an example of how to bounce tracks 1+2+3 to track 4.

    Love your videos. I just got this exact same machine and in great condition. Loving it! I was just wondering if you have any tips for recording 808 drums. I’m recording a Korg Volca Beats and find it very tricky to record those deep kick drums. It sounds great in the monitors but often sounds horrible when recorded.
    So far, the best workaround I’ve found is to record it quite low (not even hitting zero DB), with a slight bass cut. Then after it is recorded, I have to bring the fader up almost all the way up to get the desired volume and if I then crank the bass EQ, it gets the deep tone I was originally hearing when monitoring the drum machine before recording.
    Anyway, I thought maybe there is a better way. I’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences.

    Hello, great tutorial! I have a Tascam 414 mk1, and am really enjoying using it. I've only been using dynamic mics with an impedance converter (SM57 knockoff with a Shure A85F), as the mk1 lacks an XLR port. I'd love to use condenser mics with my Tascam, but from what I understand this is not as simple as plugging it into a 1/4" input on one of the 4 channels. How would you go about using a condenser mic with this kind of tape machine?

    can you run me through how you record the drum track from your DAW into track 1 of the Tascam? What is the routing? Do you need to run a cable out of an audio interface?

    Hi! whenever i plug my microphone in to my 414 and go to record, theres a very loud 60 cycle hum, If I use a pre amp such as the ART studio V3 and plug into the tascam with a 1/4 cable instead of directly with my XLR will that fix the issue (when i plug my guitar directly in theres no hum) ? love the videos btw I'm only starting to get into cassette recording so youve been very helpful, thanks!

      Always try to record your signal as loud as possible onto the tape, to have an optimal signal-to-noise ratio. If you experience extreme hiss, there might be a problem with the preamp. You could try recording through any of the 4 inputs to see if there is any difference in the amount of hiss

    • @michatroschka
      @michatroschka 3 роки тому

      Make sure the whole signal chain is as clean as possible!
      and then hit the tape with your preamp quite loud.

    • @michatroschka
      @michatroschka 3 роки тому

      i also think it could be a good idea to give your signal some high shelf eq when you record it if needed, so you wont have to boost it in mixing where you would end up boosting the hiss, too.

    For some reason input 2 has really low volume when i plug in the guitar, as opposed to the other inputs. The light up bars arent visible when i strum the guitar. I even turned all knobs up / yet i can barely hear anything through the monitor.. any idea what might be faulty? It s really low. Splash Boy Yes, you can do that! But start at low headphone levels, and increase slowly to get a good level in the recorder. If you go in too loud, you damage your input channel on the recorder. So please be careful!

    So if you want to record, say, a guitar piece over a garage band drum loop, you have to play through all the way to the end? What if you make a mistake? You have to play through the whole song again?

    • @MultitrackCassetteFans
      @MultitrackCassetteFans  5 років тому +1

      BetrayedColt Let’s suppose the complete drum loop has already been recorded on track 1, and now the guitar is being recorded on track 2. If you make a little mistake in your guitar part, you can rewind a little, and start recording over your first guitar take. You don’t have to record until the end of the song, but you can stop recording on a moment where the guitar has to be quiet. Sometimes I record a guitar on a track, followed by a lead vocal on the same track

    • @Steven_Ray99

    I think your how to videos are missing the most important part of the instructor on Tasca m. Just like the others on here and you talk to much. The set up ,if I don't see one soon I'll post one and cover, what is the vital part ? How about set up ,you unbox and plug in what ,where ,my guess is someone did it for you. How about instead of your going through this analog track recorder ,how you can just mic a song ,re record a song volume down channel let's say vocals channel 1 it won't eliminate it but when you sing over it you can't hear them and it helps you keep your time ,than you can transport to computer and do whatever you want. But the introduction more about you sounding like a engineer. Which I don't disagree ,you know your way around but it's a beginner video , for goodness sake how you skip set up ,and overkill for any beginner.

      I think it would be a good thing. Your very thorough in your presentation. It would be probably be 2 minutes max. In the lines in / out ,I run my mic through a delay pedal from the Start and than track a song through the mic from head phones without the delay pedal on. Than I go back mic through channel one with me singing with prerecorded channel almost all the way down but my main up so it's a time keeper for me. Than playback with channel 1 volume up to the other channel's. Of course take it to computer cakewalk pro tools. Yes it is ancient in today's standards. But the outcome is so not over produced sounding . I am not attempting to school you on recording process. You are obviously more educated in the process, I wanted to take a chance on getting your advice on a way I can achieve the results of not getting the overproduced sound otherwise. If I'm not making any sense ,than I've ask other people this way take Black Sabbath 1st. record for example. Every instrument is profound yet ,the remaster of it has downgraded it in my opinion. But I am the type fan that if. I see a band I like and it sounds like the. Recorded version I'm ready to leave because there's backing tracks involved. I love the slight out of. Key moments and slight timing errors of a band it's so really good. Rarely bad most of the audience doesn't recognize it.
