One of the 31 states that, along with Mexico City, comprise the 32 Federal Entities of Mexico is Campeche, formally known as Estado Libre y Soberano de Campeche (English: Free and Sovereign State of Campeche). The states of Tabasco to the southwest, Yucatán to the northeast, Quintana Roo to the east, the Petén department of Guatemala to the south, and the Orange Walk District of Belize to the southeast encircle this region of southeast Mexico. The Gulf of Mexico borders its western shore. In 1997, the state capital, also known as Campeche, was designated as a World Heritage Site.
