Haha Mike, I swear I wasn’t lying when we crossed paths at mile 23 :D Love this honest recap with the “I can, I will” whispers. Marathons are hard and you really gave it your everything, proud of you! See you in Chicago in October 🏃♂️🔥🔥🚀
@Floris It was so cool to see you and coach Jimmy running and helping Mike when he needed the most during the race. I need those voices for my next race. "You can! You will!" "I can! I will!"
I have been there myself. Something happens during the Marathon when you are totally spent. Your mind plays tricks on you with irrational negativity. I recall missing a mile pace and getting a surge of negativity. In my mind I assumed my goal was way out the window immediately. My mind was telling me the math just does not add up anymore so why push it? Just jog it in. In hindsight, the math did add up and I just needed to keep pushing through. It's almost like your mind is looking for any reason to quit and then it delivers it to you with bad math. 😀
@florisgierman you and jimmy are salt of the earth ppl! How generous and great representatives of our running community are u guys! Thank you for looking out for one another.
Absolutely LOVED this recap! Technical talk, gear stuff, drama, vulnerability, comedy, and friendship...all in one video. Huge shout out to Floris and Jimmy for what they did!
Congrats on your PR Mike! Thank you for sharing your inspirational journey! Much respect to Floris and Jimmy for prodding the “donkey” for the last 3 miles.
FANTASTIC! Seriously man what an effort. Congrats, this is something to be celebrated for sure. To Jimmy and Flores for pushing you and being there for you at the end. You guys are amazing. One of the more inspiring things I've seen in a while.
Congratulations Michael! …and welcome to the 3hr-even-plus-change crew. I feel It’s a team of mixed feelings right? My last Marathon was 3:00:14, though I feel proud I PR’d, I’m struggling of “what if I…”? I know we all itching to leave this group. One day it will happen! Man how I wished Floris and Coach was with me on my last miles! Your last miles were really inspiring to see! Again Congratulations!🎉 👊👍
My favorite race recap yet!! Love the use of similes - "like a toddler stamping their feet" "like a donkey refusing to be pulled" lol. So much mental and physical strength, congrats!!!
40 year old, shooting for sub 3:05 race. And I had nearly the EXACT same race (and thoughts) as you, down to the tough last few miles. Finished 5th in our division, a few minutes behind you!
Thank you for all the inspiration! November 2021 LA Marathon: 5hrs 45minutes March 2022 LA Marathon: 4hrs 40minutes Signing up for next year’s LA Marathon and want to break 4 hours 😅🙏🏾
Outstanding Mike and so close to your goal but a PR non the less so well done. Berlin has to be on your radar it’s a fantastic marathon and if you can run that hilly course in LA in just over 3 you’ll do Berlin under 3 easy. Great work 👏Ian 🇬🇧
Just seeing those hills got me stressed! What a terrific race effort. “I can. I will.” needs to be on the next Path-Kofuzi collab shirt. Also ❤️ the 🍍 piñata, 🦈, and esp 🦄 sightings. Floris and coach Jimmy - such great supporters! We all need friends like them.
this is so helpful--thanks! I am running LA this year at 57 years old. I ran LA in 2010 when I was 44 and ran 3:00:35 (PR 2:53:33 Chicago 2009). I'm nervous about the marathon this year--the hills!!! haven't run a marathon since Berlin 2010--training has been going OK. This is great, though--congrats on your strong and impressive finish!
Sub 3 in Duluth, MN! Point to point course and nice and flat. PS That starting pace had lots of runners going out so fast. Had me scared for potential carnage later in the race.
You have three months! I think you’ll be ready, but could keep the Gerry Bjorkland Half as a fallback option. Here’s me hoping for a Kofuzi Run Club shakeout along the lake shore in Canal Park. It would be SO fun!
@@laurainthehaute918 14 weeks. It would be a fun shakeout but its a quick turn around. The half has been sold out for a while. As a #nonelite star, he probably could get a bib. LOL
Well done, Mike. So proud of you too :-) I was interested in LA M before, but after watching this, I lost interest :-) Instead, I'm running Big Sur in April and probably not going to try to PR :-) You are amazing athlete!
Congrats again Ko. Great marathon finish, it’s all mind games those last 3 miles. For me I was just running looking for that 4 hrs pacer to not catch me 🤣😂🤣😂.
AMAZING recap, Ko. Didn’t feel like 30 min, I was sad when it was over! Sounds like this marathon really tested you at a level you’ve never been tested and now that you’ve made it through that dark place with the help of Floris and Jimmy you can continue to push the limits!

Amazing recap! Floris and Jimmy are two great examples of making running a team sport. I had a friend pace me through my first half and felt a huge sense of gratitude.
it's so amazing to see you proud and happy instead of moping and bitter, it really sounds like you put in a good fight and set the stage for your next run.
Congrats Mike! LA is not an easy course and race day we had what felt like head winds on all the climbs. Your time is fantastic for the course and weather!
I used both and compared my HRM to my Fenix 6. HR is identical for me and I don't see more accuracy from the chest strap. In fact, if the chest strap wasn't wet starting my runs in the winter months, the HR was off for sure. Big pain for me. No problems on my wrist HR since I started using 3 months ago with several races and hundreds of miles down. Guess I found the sweet spot on my wrist and I don't miss the chest strap at all. I use the Stryd pod so I get super accurate data for other metrics.
@@jimoconnor8597 I use a forerunner 245 and especially when I do faster workouts or races the wrist HR is way off like 10 BPM or even more. Also on longer runs it's starting to get inaccurate after 5-7 miles. Maybe it's only the wrist sensor in the cheaper models or it doesn't fit my wrist good enough.
This has bought back so many memories, I was pretty out of it for most of race so my mile markers are off in my recap of 2020, the 30-35k point after that uphill and then the lefthand turn is where I almost gave up I was in so much pain!! Great recap!
Thank you for a wonderful race recap and taking us along for the ride, Mike. Congrats on your 3:00:49 time. A really great effort. You should be very proud.
Amazing recap…as a 65 yr.old beginner, it was awesome to hear an honest, real breakdown of a big effort. I run my 5k like you run a marathon…very similar feelings, lol. BUT, all the same, it inspires me to run for a new PR each time.
It's a great result. What I love about the UA-cam running community is that a guy like Floris and Jimmy took the time to run you into finish. You're now as kipchoge would say only 49 seconds away from breaking 3.
Huge congrats Mike - what a brilliant run and a great recap of the race itself. Got a 3.02 in the Barcelona marathon a few months back and will aim for a sub-3 soon - this vid has given me inspiration to strive for that elusive goal!!
Inspirational running Ko! Marathon running can be so lonely especially in those last miles where your body is struggling and I’m so happy your friends found you and helped you through. Great job Floris and Jimmy!
Mike, this recap shows your fight, self doubt, and tenacity, it was AMAZING! YOU SHOULD BE VERY, VERY PROUD! YOU EARNED EVERY SECOND OF THAT RESULT! I know you will build upon these tough races and that sub 3 time will be obliterated! YOU CAN! YOU WILL!
Getting quite emotional at your recap of the back end with Jimmy & Floris. First Marathon for me next weekend, going for 3:20. I've gone through all my positive visualisation of this pain cave and it's ringing alot of bells, only making me more excited.
Hey, great recap man! My gf & I are running LA this year for the first time & we just watched it together. FINALLY...someone talks about things worthwhile like the asphalt roads, length of hills, etc. Most recaps are just about the shots of beer along the course & the post-race food. lol Well done on a good race.
Thank you for telling us about your self doubts and anxieties that kicked in during your marathon run. I'll keep that part in mind for this Sundays 2024 marathon. God bless you.💯🙏
@@kofuzi I've run Boston 8 times (never tried to qualify, back of the pack) and if you've never run it before. you will be pleasantly surprised by the size and enthusiasm of the crowds. Congrats man! Your comment of being disheartened seeing the elite at the 25 mile marker while you’re not even at 22 is what I felt when I saw you at 25 haha!
Awesome job homie! Your race day recap emphasizes how epic your PR and proves the point that if you “put in the work, you get results”. Also thank you so much for your support and shout out to my efforts to help and support the Covenant House in New Orleans community!
This is really amazing and inspiring Mike! Thought this was a mind game especially the last couple of miles in your race struggling whether you can hit your goal! Whispering “I can, I will” did really help and this gonna be in my book for whatever I need to pursue for in the near future. Congratulations again 👏🤘👍💪🏼!!
great review, that distance will make everyone humble. The fact that you trained for this March marathon through the Chicago winter should not be overlooked; this was a definite achievement.
I had the same experience in my first marathon. Some friends ran with me the last 10k, and I experienced exactly that. I finished in 3:16, and I was so tired and destroyed that I did not enjoy crossing the finish line. So you have your sub3 there; once you find a flat course, it is on you. Great race.
Hi Ko this is Sonny from Hong Kong! Been following your livestream everyday as been working from home. Great job! Very relatable as we all chase our own sub 3 and PR, and do our marathon math during the race lol! Enjoy the process and it will all come through! Cheers!
Your non-elite human nature allows for connection with the rest of us Sub elite recreational runners. Thanks for taking us along the journey. Certainly can relate to the mental struggle - going to read Ryan halls book and “running with the mind of meditation”- congrats again on PR

I've been poking around (came back here to leave my first comment) your other videos and am SO stoked i found your channel! Thanks for all the rad content - i look forward to catching up on the old and following along as you continue your running journey. already a fan!
@@kofuzi why did you behave to paraphrase you like a kid in that moment? Why didn’t you want to finish strong even if you “knew” you wouldn’t be able to run the marathon under 3 hours anymore?
I was watching the marathon here and there and I saw a guy run backwards up that 200 ft gain hill 😆 i do not know why he did that but it was pure entertainment
Awesome race Mike! As for me, I got my finisher's medal but my performance was ruined when I came down with right knee pain in the 1st half and by mile 20 I had to walk slowly to the finish. Getting my medal did make me feel better. You never know what will happen race day.
Mike, this recap is a little jewel: honest, inspiring and stuffed with useful insights and good vibes. Thank you for sharing and congrats for your PR. Next marathon you will smash it. Also lots of cheers for Floris and coach Jimmy. Am thrilled to run for the 1st time the Chicago Marathon coming October.
The generosity and community of Floris and Jimmy is so inspirational and amazing. You'll get the next one, brother. The toddler arguing energy made me laugh. But I wish you had believed them when they told you you were that close. hahahaha. That's a lot of hills though. Would you change anything in your training for the hills next time?
Bravo, Mike! Congratulations on a hard-fought race! You are LA tempered, strong and ready for the cooling waters of Lake Superior!🌊💜I’ve done Grandma’s Marathon several times-it is a sweet course with Lake Superior on your left all the way home (and a gentle, barely rolling course with net downhill). At the end you can cool down in the Lake. They also have the Gerry Bjorkland Half which I did last year (it starts well before the marathon so we can cheer you across the finish in Canal Park). We stay at a hotel on the finish line-so convenient and easy. I saw Kellyn Taylor break the women’s course record a year I was side-lined but still went up to Duluth. Great race weekend atmosphere. Hope you will do it. I am positive you can get your sub 3 there. But the half is also waiting for you. Thank you for the inspiring video, as always. Beautiful work.
Congratulations! The LA Marathon course is Boston Marathon Lite, West Coast Edition. The current course tweak lost the downhill finish, but put the course profiles side-by-side and you'll see they have many similarities. To have a huge PR in LA is a big accomplishment! Too bad you didn't get to experience the "Stadium to the Sea" course that finishes on Ocean Blvd in Santa Monica, because not only does that make it a much more satisfying tour of LA, but the last 3 miles is a smooth, fairly straight downhill that you can really fly if you have the legs....and from Santa Monica you could take the light rail back to your DTLA hotel (LA Metro used to give out free transit passes for race day too!). The current "Stadium to the Stars" (btw, Century City is not exactly a place where "stars" hang out) is a huge downgrade. Who wants to turn around, and head uphill for the last 2-3 miles, only to finish among the mishmash of nondescript tall office buildings where most Angelenos spend very little time?! I hear it's a financial thing (Santa Monica wants to charge too much for hosting the finish is the reason given by the marathon organizers), but you could totally have broken 3 hours on that course. Hope they bring it back! Having run the "Stadium to the Sea" 4 times, I am not interested in running the LAM again until they bring back the previous course, because to finish in Century City is definitely not something I look forward to.
Great recap Mike. And congratulations, amazing job! This time in LA I reckon is good for a 2:57 - 2:58 time in Chicago. About the course, yeah, they really screwed up by removing the finish from Santa Monica. This is my home race and won’t run it again until they change the course again 😂 Well done again!
Congrats on a great race. Not only was the course tough but it was also windy too. To PR on that day means you have gained a ton of fitness in the last few months. Hopefully you can find a fast race this fall to get that sub 3. My prediction is 2:57 at Chicago
@kofuzi the LA MARATHON VLOGS MADE ME CRY! i can see how much you wanna get that sub 3! The emotions was pure! And runners would feel that too by just watching it! Wow! Impressive. You gave it your all & did so well on a difficult course. You definitely earned that 3:00 & some change. I live in Long Beach, CA & thought I should run LA one day, but maybe not. My last marathon didn’t have the clocks, either. I guess they just assume we all have fancy watches so they might as well save the click money. Who knows! With your situation you might consider low volume (high quality) training. Good luck in any case!
Congrats man! Your comment of being disheartened seeing the elite at the 25 mile marker while you’re not even at 22 is what I felt when I saw you at 25 haha!
I DON'T BELIEVE YOU GUYS! Classic. Enjoyed this a lot.
Great work Ko!
So emotional, thank you for the insight to an elite's runners challenges
Awesome job homie! Your race day recap emphasizes how epic your PR and proves the point that if you “put in the work, you get results”. Also thank you so much for your support and shout out to my efforts to help and support the Covenant House in New Orleans community!
I absolutely loved this race recap. It's truly a race to be proud of for both the time and for breaking the mental hurdle at the end.
it was a real breakthrough
This is most honest review of a marathon goal attempt ive ever seen. I appreciate this! I think more people should see the real “pain cave”
Thank you for the continued inspiration, Mike! Motto for final miles of my next race: “I Can, I Will” or “Head cut off”😆
I had the same experience in my first marathon.
Cheers!
Congrats Mike!!! It’s very inspiring to us above 40 years runners that you were able to perform so well!
Your non-elite human nature allows for connection with the rest of us Sub elite recreational runners. Thanks for taking us along the journey. Certainly can relate to the mental struggle - going to read Ryan halls book and “running with the mind of meditation”- congrats again on PR
Congrats Mike, thx
Congrats! Great race recap. What a mental and physical game! Hats off to you. 1000ft of elevation gain is significant on a marathon distance.
Hi! I just found your channel as I was searching for LA Marathon videos and this one came up! I've been poking around (came back here to leave my first comment) your other videos and am SO stoked i found your channel! Thanks for all the rad content - i look forward to catching up on the old and following along as you continue your running journey. already a fan!
This was so inspirational. Thank you for making these videos. I am so inspired by the coaches who ran and pushed you through the end.
they gave me so much
@@kofuzi why did you behave to paraphrase you like a kid in that moment? Why didn’t you want to finish strong even if you “knew” you wouldn’t be able to run the marathon under 3 hours anymore?
I run with Floris and Jimmy and they are awesome. So glad they helped you finish.
great guys to run with
I was watching the marathon here and there and I saw a guy run backwards up that 200 ft gain hill 😆 i do not know why he did that but it was pure entertainment
Awesome race Mike! As for me, I got my finisher's medal but my performance was ruined when I came down with right knee pain in the 1st half and by mile 20 I had to walk slowly to the finish. Getting my medal did make me feel better. You never know what will happen race day.
Awesome Mike! I saw this footage on Floris' channel first, but it is good to hear your story.
Mike, this recap is a little jewel: honest, inspiring and stuffed with useful insights and good vibes. Thank you for sharing and congrats for your PR. Next marathon you will smash it. Also lots of cheers for Floris and coach Jimmy. Am thrilled to run for the 1st time the Chicago Marathon coming October.
thanks so much!
awesome recap 👏 . watching this video I feel I can run faster now. thanks for the motivation
Loved the recap, and the honesty in it, absolutely amazing and inspiring, huge congratulations on the new pb, thanks for sharing 🙌👍🎉🥇
GREAT!!! Chicago marathon this year will be my first. Hope to meet you. Traveling from Puerto Rico 🇵🇷
I wasn't ready to believe them, I think
Very inspirational! You fought extremely hard! Sub 3 is not far away!
Really encapsulates the roller coaster of emotions that occur during a marathon. Great video, maybe your best ever.
Great Job, Mike. mile 20 does suck big balls at LAM. Congratulations, you did great. and TEAM CRUDA waits for you with the pinata again every year!!!
the piñata was the power up I never knew I needed
Still very strong. You should run Amsterdam or Rotterdam. Nice flat, you will hit that sub3 for sure! Great review. It’s all a mind game.
I've watched a few of your race recaps. This was amazing. I felt I was running with you! Congrats on your result!
Awesome race Mike... Really pushed through and had a damn good time!
Great recap Mike. And congratulations, amazing job! This time in LA I reckon is good for a 2:57 - 2:58 time in Chicago.
About the course, yeah, they really screwed up by removing the finish from Santa Monica. This is my home race and won’t run it again until they change the course again 😂
Well done again!
Great recap! The way you described everything I could almost feel like I was there. You're quick becoming my favorite running UA-camr Kofuzi!
Congrats on a great race. Not only was the course tough but it was also windy too. To PR on that day means you have gained a ton of fitness in the last few months. Hopefully you can find a fast race this fall to get that sub 3. My prediction is 2:57 at Chicago
Great video. I have ran that race before and missed it this year. You motivated me to get back to it! Thx
@kofuzi the LA MARATHON VLOGS MADE ME CRY! i can see how much you wanna get that sub 3! The emotions was pure! And runners would feel that too by just watching it! I remember doing my first marathon the last 5k was the hardest but it was all about the mindset! You had that plus the help of Coach Jimmy and Floris! They are amazing too! Your LA MARATHON VLOG just gave me an extra boost of motivation to train harder for my Calgary Marathon this May!
Wow! Who knows! Those marathon demons that pay a visit at the end of a race are all too familiar. Great recap!
