    This is it folks!
    This is the big turning point, the milestone event!
    A DIRECT PLUG-IN REPLACEMENT controller. 👍👍👍
    It should already be fully programmed and setup for typical riders, and needs an easy to follow instruction guide for the simple tweak adjustments most people will make. I am sure they are working on that.
    I have worked in the electronics industry for decades and have seen this turning point before. A plug-in replacement controller basically makes F.M's repair department obsolete. Plug-in replacement batteries are next (if not here already) and then we just need hubmotors.
    I wonder if F.M. realise just how much their immoral stance on right to repair will cost them in the long run...
    Fantastic video! You made my day. 👍🥇

    Where did you get the controller box from? Did it arrive fully assembled like that? Seemed like you just had a plug and play controller, but all I see on the websites is a kit for the controller, and then you need to order the controller box elsewhere, and the gasket and lid elsewhere and assemble it all yourself. Did they just put one together for you for the vid, or can you actually buy it like that?

    Wait ...you said it has as much torque is a GT? On a stock 63v battery? I was under the impression that because the motors are the same you would have to get a 75 V battery pack (like GT) to get something more comparable to GT torque?

    • @surfdado
      @surfdado 2 роки тому +2

      Torque depends on max amps, not voltage. Higher voltage gets you higher speed but doesn’t directly increase torque at all. The GT has higher voltage allowing for higher speed than XR. It also can output more amps which is what gives it more torque

    • @ZuberEUC
      @ZuberEUC 2 роки тому +1

      @@surfdado ok...amp discharge is most relevant (given a certain voltage)...agreed. But if this was a 63v pack...does the VESC setup allow for vastly more amp discharge (assuming the cell has the amp capability) than an XR controller?...to get similar torque to that of the GT or beyond??

    • @surfdado
      @surfdado 2 роки тому +2

      @@ZuberEUC because Max has the BMS removed, the battery amps aren't limited. The VESC app lets you freely configure max battery amps and max motor amps. The stock XR battery is only rated for 30A max but you can temporarily get a lot more out of a pack like that, at the expense of battery life and health - but Max will soon upgrade to a much more powerful battery so he probably doesn't care about his stock battery.

    Max! Thanks for this video, but now you’ve put me in a weird spot. I’m riding a Pint right now, looking to upgrade as soon as I have the funds. Would you suggest the GT, or just get a used XR and start kitting it out? The high speed and torque of the GT really appeal to me (and the range) but open source stuff like this gets me all excited.

    • @LayerZeroDesign
      @LayerZeroDesign 2 роки тому

      Go XR! IMHO. I started out on a Pint X and was looking to upgrade. Naturally I thought that would be the GT, as I was mainly just looking for a physically bigger board as I'm 6'3" and have big feet so the pint just isn't super comfortable for my feet on longer rides. Then I started looking into it more and more, found stuff like the CBXR and JWXR batteries, VESC, and just the absolute wealth of community and aftermarket industry that surrounds the XR. The kinda stuff that you simply can't put a price on. Tons of parts and mods out there, tons of knowledge, tons of people willing to help and share. All the kind of shit that FM is trying really hard to kill, most of all so (to date) with the GT. I was looking for a 4209 so I would have the ability to keep my XR alive for many years to come. I ultimately ended up with a 4212 and got a JWXR copper battery with the JWFFM chip. I love modding and tweaking, making stuff my own, and the XR allowed me to build an absolutely gucci board. Tail rails, grizzly bearings, badger bumpers, different footpad and grip tape, a flight fender, CNC enclosures, CNC hubs, CNC motor plate, some Ti hardware all riding on a TFL enduro.. some other little bits and bobs too. At this point, I'd take my XR over a GT any day of the week. If I got a GT, I wouldn't have been able to do a fraction of the things I was able to on the XR. And now that I have my JW chip, I can swap batteries as needed and keep it running for many years to come... And as VESC continues to develop, that is always an option as well.

    Nice Video, but there are a few things you got wrong. The VESC-Tool and VESC firmware are made by Benjamin Vedder. Then there are different VESC-Controllers: VESC 6, VESC 6/75, VESC 75/300 and VESC 100/250. These are all designed by and with Benjamin Vedder and are the official VESC line of products. Then there is third party hardware (VESC-compatible but not VESC) like the Little FOCer, Stormcore,Flipsky etc. Those are not "VESCs", just like a Teensy is not an Arduino. They are not officially licensed and have to carry a different branding. Another thing that exists is third party firmware, not from Vedder... So VESC refers to all the stuff Vedder is directly involved in, hence Vedder in the name.

    I Get the feel that swapping XR motors using the stock controllers might actually be a bad thing if the VESC has to calibrate itself to that specific motor to work well. Not that swapping motors would be inherently dangerous, but you might not get the most out of your board without calibration. That being said, that the VESC has come this far is AMAZING! It gives me an option should my XR start failing in one way or another, especially since I can't just order what I need from FM :D

    • @wizrom3046
      @wizrom3046 2 роки тому +1

      It should not require much (if any) calibration when swapping hubmotors provided they are the same type of motor. The number of poles will not change, nor the phase angle of the hall sensors etc as they are all factory set in the correct phase position when the motor is made. And even the motor inductance should be the same unless it is a different model of motor with different k:V rating.
