    A visualisation method that displays how frequently words appear in a given body of text, by making the size of each word proportional to its frequency. All the words are then arranged in a cluster or cloud of words. Alternatively, the words can also be arranged in any format: horizontal lines, columns or within a shape.
    Word Clouds can also be used to display words that have meta-data assigned to them. For example, in a Word Cloud of all the World's countries, population could be assigned to each country's name to determine its size.
    Colour used on Word Clouds is usually meaningless and is primarily aesthetic, but it can be used to categorise words or to display another data variable.
    Typically, Word Clouds are used on websites or blogs to depict keyword or tag usage. Word Clouds can also be used to compare two different bodies of text together.

    Love this! Explanation was so simple, but so helpful. Was dead set on using a world cloud for a viz I'm planning to make, and realized that I could actually use a tree map. YAAAS

    Does anyone know the formula Tableau uses for spacing the text? I am trying to manually create a bubble chart and cannot seem to find the calculation for spacing the bubbles.

    Can I build word cloud into custom shapes in Tableau (for eg: maybe a logo filled with the words)?

    Very cool, and good point about best practice. One thing I haven't seen anywhere is a tutorial on what I think is the BEST use case for a Word Cloud, which is open-response question survey analysis. I'd love to see a tutorial on how you'd make a Word Cloud analyzing the frequency of individual words/phrases in large open text fields, across multiple users. Not sure how that would be achieved...

      Hey!
      In Tableau? It would be complicated, however, if you do all data prep in R and then connect it to Tableau it would take few seconds.

    Thanks for demonstrating this. How do I create the text file if I don't have Python skills?

    Can anyone point me in the direction of how to do this with a measure that does not contain single words or names but rather sentences? How would that work? Do I need to break out the sentences into words in their own cells?

    thanks, this would very good. Wondered if you can change the words into the shape of a cloud and change the font ?

      @ArtofVisualization  6 років тому

      Hi Elisabeth, unfortunately using this approach it is not possible to use custom shapes. You can, however, edit the font by changing the font type under the text tab.

    Just constructive feedback. This video is not very helpful. It is all over the place while the title is confusing. For example, very little is discussed about word-clouds and how to set them up as well as filtering, etc which are more helpful than comparing word clouds to other methods. In other words, your other methods appearr to be better than word cloud based on how you have presented word cloud. The way you set your word clouds up isn't helpful because they wouldn't give you any information anyway because they are poorly set up. How about introducing parameters and filters that make them helpful rather than criticizing them when you have not even set up one that would be practical?? It doesn't make any sense.
