I'm sure he is fine. They sent out text alerts immediately if you were in a danger zone. My husband was standing in the ocean. He had plenty of time to leave the beach.
I'm noticing a lot of people not very aware about certain parts of Alaska, you can't move to a certain elevation unless you plan on being in the wilderness. Also, where I live it's very unlikely for a tsunami to do damage.

This is a very serious earthquake. The Loma Prieta Earthquake in 1989 in San Francisco was 6.9 in magnitude. Around 60 people died and cost the city 10 Billion dollars in damage, and that's 30 years ago.

There was a 7.8 earthquake it was off the Aleutian Islands in Alaska and there where many aftershocks. The tsunami warnings was cancled at 12:34am for anyone wondering.
Since the quake happened in the deep ocean and was over 100 miles offshore, it didn't do much on land. The closest shore has no villages and the major population centers in the region, Kodiak and Unalaska, are more than 200 miles away.
That's a pretty significant earthquake. I am very fascinated in earthquakes. Experienced one, in Kansas, no less. Few people realize that a fault line runs right up the middle of Kansas and connects to the one south of the Kansas border, and the one that is exacerbated by fracking in or near Oklahoma City. The far upper Ne branch of that fault runs under Topeka where I lived at the time I experience the mild but half-minute long shaking with a deep roaring noise. No known damage in Topeka. I lived just east of Bennet's Mound in Topeka, and probably, the fault runs under that and the apartment building where I was living in at the time. It shook my computer table, monitor, and I could see the shadow of my chandelier swinging, and my dog was barking like crazy. Probably, not even one on the Richter Scale, that earth movement, but still enough to wake you up.

I was there in the Bay Area on that day! It was scary beyond belief! I finally left California in 1999 for Phoenix, AZ. No shaking here in the desert.
