Pls NB. This is not my first time listening to this track, I've listened and reacted to the studio version before this.
Part 2 came out 1h after this upload and commentary was made there as i wanted to listen to the entire track before.

It's Pompeii ...there are no people who live there it was struck by volcano centuries ago they all died
Yay so happy you're checking Echoes out! Definitely give the studio version a listen too as the production is amazing. My fave live version too has to be when they played at Gdansk. It was their final performance of the song prior to Richards death and the way his keys and David's guitar echo to each other is magical.
She did the studio version already. Totally agree with you about Gdansk.

I love the Gdansk version the best, I think. I like the extended soloing, the maturity of the production, and the poignancy of the musical conversation between Gilmour and Wright.
Rodger waters, nick mason, and Richard wright all met in college. They were studying to become architects but they decided that’s not the life they wanted to live and started a band. I can’t Imagine what my life would be like if they had decided to stay in college.

Then anything from the Pulse Concert is going to be pretty good.
Comfortably Numb has an extended guitar solo and Run Like Hell is a lesson in how to end a concert!

Regarding the city of Pompei:
"Around noon on August 24, 79 ce, a huge eruption from Mount Vesuvius showered volcanic debris over the city of Pompeii, followed the next day by clouds of blisteringly hot gases. Buildings were destroyed, the population was crushed or asphyxiated, and the city was buried beneath a blanket of ash and pumice.
For many centuries Pompeii slept beneath its pall of ash, which perfectly preserved the remains. When these were finally unearthed, in the 1700s, the world was astonished at the discovery of a sophisticated Greco-Roman city frozen in time. Grand public buildings included an impressive forum and an amphitheatre; lavish villas and all kinds of houses, dating back to the 4th century bce, were also uncovered. Inside were some preserved remains of people sheltering from the eruption; others lay buried as they fled; bakeries were found with loaves still in the ovens. The buildings and their contents revealed day-to-day life in the ancient world-and stirred 18th-century interest in all things classical."
This is just to explain the footage in this video of the artwork and statues, and of the band walking on the side of the volcano.

Check out "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" from the David Gilmour 2016 Pompeii concert. Played before a night time audience and some gorgeous scenery.

They couldn't get permission from the archaeology department to have a live session at the sight, but they allowed them to do a concert set up for an outdoor venue minus the stage and record the event.
It's cooler like this without the stage, I think
Love your reactions and your appreciation of Pink Floyds music. Try listening to the final performance of this incredible track performed by David and Rick, before he passed. David has said he will never perform it again.

I have been loving your reaction vids to Pink Floyd, especially DSOTM. You really understand the emotional connection. I've been serching for your reaction to SRV's Rivera Paradise but haven't seen one. If you have one please point me to it. And if you don't you really should do one. The emotions evoked will leave you speechless and in tears.

You know David went back to Pompeii in 2016. He played his ass off. He was 70 years old in 2016.some of the greatest version's of their music was played then. Best version of "Run like hell" that I've ever heard or seen. It's my opinion that it ended where it started. Pompeii. Just by the way they played in 2016. 🐊🌴🌄 Also in 2016 they had a crowd and it was at night. Good light show.
There is one more version of this that I think you should listen to it’s called echoes live in Gdańsk and it’s the last time ever it was performed because after Richard Wright the keyboard player died, it is very emotional, the playing between David and Richard throughout the song is amazing.

This version is better than the studio version, imo.
If anything, the sound engineers and camera folks of Live in Pompeii gave Nick Mason the most attention to his drumming of his whole career. Everyone in the band were all in sync, performance wise for this
Nick Mason is the Star in this one.

As far as next reaction, I prefer The Wall to Dogs, though both are great choices... btw, The Wall, which Roger made into a feature length film, has several of its dramatic songs available on YT, which reveals a lot about Waters' intent for those tunes! I feel much of Echoes was written for an empty amphitheater.
You can see and feel the lament and tortured souls of the long past gladiators , Christians etc who died here as entertainment.

Two reasons you don't see massive crowds on this one, Sarah. First, this was recorded in 1971 prior to the release of any of Floyd's most classic albums. Sure, they were know by the rock & roll elite, but had hardly achieved anywhere near the kind of international fame that would soon come their way. Secondly, this was recorded at the ancient amphitheater at Pompeii Italy. A city that was destroyed by a volcano nearly 2,000 yrs ago killing thousands of people. It remains to this day one of the world's most famous archeological sites. This was the first time anyone had played there in a couple of thousand years. It was an ancient fragile place and hardly in any condition for massive crowds. Pompeii serves as an awesome atmospheric backdrop here. Not as a concert hall. Perfect for Pink Floyd.
This performance was billed as the Anti-Woodstock. When David Gilmour played there again in 2016, it was the first live performance with an audience since 92 AD. During this performance, other than the crew, the audience consisted of 2 young boys who snuck into the venue to see what was going on. They allowed them to sit and watch.
@@jimo7593 Yes, that's true. Anti-Woodstock. But it was not a protest against Woodstock. And that's probably what their sound engineer came up with. Also they have huge problems with electricity for about 4 days. So when they had no sound, they wandered around Vesuvius, so we have a lot of footage
@@jareczek1980 correct, it was in no way a protest against Woodstock. It was an anti-Woodstock in the means of no crowd, no other acts, etc.
As far as power, yeah, they had to run cables from a few nearby businesses.
@@jimo7593 should probably mention that even in 2016 the smallish crowd was relegated to mostly an area on the main floor/ground. Nothing like the stadiums full of people Floyd is used to playing to. But it made for some beautiful optics at night. The rendition of "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" at the 2016 Gilmour Pompeii concert is a standout for me.

this version is just fine compared to gdansk 2006 which is just a masterpiece ! you should see it
7:10. Not an ebow in sight. I sold my Big Muff and now use an e-bow. Biggest mistake of my life. Apart from getting married of course! Joking. I love my good lady mostly, but she hates Floyd. Grounds for divorce!
If you liked that "Comfortably numb" live at Pulse will blow your mind. There's a guitar solo in it that I believe is the best guitar solo period.
This sort of thing is becoming more common and this may seem harsh, but copyright holders barely recognize legitimate fair use, this is not transformative and it puts channels that actually analyze music at risk. This is basically just getting to listen to the song on someone other than the copyright holder's channel. They need to go.
