- Today I'll show you the beautiful Pride of Barbados. This perennial can handle extreme heat and limestone/alkaline soil. It's covered with beautiful red and orange flowers from May till October. Follow me for tips on how to grow this beautiful Super Star of Texas.
Thank you for the clear and informative video of growing the Pride of Barbados!
You're welcome! I love this plant.
My favorite companion neighbor to this plant is a Texas indigenous shrub “Esperanza” Spanish for Hope, brilliant yellow trumpet-like blooms
Oh Yes! We love our Esperanza, Yellow Bells! Mine died in the bad freezes, but I'll be planting a new one soon.
This plant comes in like 10 different colors. I have orange, pink, yellow and blue on my Caribbean house. I brought some seeds of the orange variety to my house here in Bell County TX last year and grew them inside the house over winter, in plastic cups. Only one remains, and it is planted outside since March of this year refusing to grow. 😂 The little thing is almost a year old and not taller than 5 inches. I am really hoping it doesn’t die or I’ll have to start all over from seeds this year. Thankfully I spotted an old plant in the neighborhood with plenty of seed pods. Maybe I’ll ask the neighbor for some seeds.🤷🏼♂️
Yes, if you keep it watered if will grow into a full grown tree!
I drive down Lakeline every day and there are some really pretty red and orange pride of Barbados in the median. They are so pretty!! I finally went searching for the name of these beauties! Thank you for this information. ❤
You definitely need one!
I can tell you love them! I just received some from neighbor so I'm learning
They do great in this area!
They do great in this area!
wao looks almost like the royal ponciana flowers I'm in ❤️ love 😅
They are so beautiful! I hope you'll try some.
Wow ....Thank you for sharing this!... It really is a beautiful flowering plant.... More the better....
So glad you enjoyed this video.
We had one in Round Rock and loved it. When we moved to Bastrop we wanted one. Found a nice one at HEB!
You must get one and then you can plant the seeds in pots for more.
Love it. Gonna get one!
Yes, they're so pretty and come back every year.
I am so glad I saw your video. How did you get your plant to grow back because mine is down to the ground like yours was in the beginning of the video. I think I pruned it too soon. Did it last month and we ended up having another very cold weekend.
It will come back. It's one of the last plants to come back every year.
I live in Plano and am a new subscriber. What is the best time of year to plant a Pride of Barbados purchased from a nursery? You mentioned in your video you’re going to wait until fall to plant yours.
It looks beautiful!
Has urs started to grow back from the ground this year ?
Thank you
Just barely started! They are late to begin sprouting after winter!
Thank you, because I was about dig mine up, I’ll just be more patient
I love the Pride of Barbados......put some in the front. They are so showey
Yes! I have plans for more in the front! I'm going to plant the shorter variety in front. Thanks for commenting and please come back!
You mentioned pruning for the winter months and showed the picture. Is that picture accurate to about how much to prune back after the winter freeze? Mine didn’t come back this year so I am giving it a second go this summer.
Yes you prune it very low after it goes dormant. Try again and plant in early spring so it has time to develop strong roots before our freeze.
@@therockyhillgardener Thank you for the tips!
Are there any special things special to do to the seeds to get them to sprout?
Not really. Good potting soil, shade and moisture. When they get 4-5" tall put them in a little bit of sun.
I just noticed large tborns on one I planted last spring. Is this normal.
This plant has not had flowers yet. But looks extremely healthy. Someone please tell me if they all have thorns I've never noticed.
Multiple branches with small thorns, so avoid planting directly on walking paths.
If I start seeds now for container growing, will the plant survive without needing to go dormant? This is early august, Central TX.
I plant my seeds in January when it's cool. Here is the link to the video.

I have heard that the seeds are toxic when eaten. I guess the birds can pass them without an issue.
Good point! I make sure to let me grand kids know not to eat any seeds unless I've approved them.
Hi Cindy, thanks for your video.....how often (if at all) do you water your POB?
I water her twice a week. I see them all over town with no blooms because people have stopped watering in this heat. Mine is still covered with flowers.
Cindy, when can you plant the seeds in the ground?
Yes. Birds drop them and they sprout up on their own. I usually plant them in a pot first but you can choose either way.
Are there any caterpillars that eat it?
I don't think so
Hi Cindy, I am in Nevada. Here's a pic of my Red Bird of Paradise. It's tall, but my leaves are turning yellow. What can I do to stop the yellow leaves. Also its a baby plant. Within 4 months it has grown that tall. When do I cut it back and how far do I cut it? Thanks for your help.
Sorry couldn't send pic, but the plant is over 6 feet
That's amazing. I love these beauties!!
Give it some mild fertilizer and keep watering when the ground is dry.
(I test with my finger - if its dry about two inches down I water)
That plant is a wildflower in Philippines. It grows on the sides of the road. People here ignore it because it's so common but in your country you seem to be amazed by it 😂
What's the name of this plant again? I wonder if people are buying these online. I'd be very glad to find some near the nearby roads and sell.
Pride of Barbados! We love them here!
Can this plant be grown in a large container?
Yes! It will be fine in a large container.
Will they grow i .P.A.
I don't know. I would google your County Extension Agency. They'll be able to let you know.
Can i keep in pot permanently?
Yes! I trim it back by 1/2 and never take it out of the pot until it gets root bound. Then I'll transplant it to a bigger pot.
