    Thermal expansion on the gears could be a problem, looks like custom one piece pinions joining the two motors on each side would be an alternative. Good work Raz!

    • @Mad.Man.Marine
      @Mad.Man.Marine 2 роки тому +4

      What form of expansion are you thinking about? Radial? If you mean the width. Then I can’t see why it would ever be a problem. They are spinning the same direction. Now radially. I could maybe see that as a problem. But it could be adjusted out so the tolerance would be right once they are at running temp. Would just be a little loud while warming up the first few runns

    • @midship_nc
      @midship_nc 2 роки тому +24

      @@Mad.Man.Marine axial expansion towards each other, I know for a fact those motors do not use thrust bearings and only have two radial ball bearings on the shaft which cannot handle axial loads. The shafts and the gears will expand with heat. It will at minimum create extra drag and convert wattage into heat. Long term it will ruin the bearings in the motors. To deal with this he could use a captured one piece pinion with needle thrust bearings for each pair of motors that floats on the shafts with no set screws and would allow for expansion. This may seem over engineered but I can't help it, I work with bearing tribology, and industrial rotating equipment reliability every day lol.

    • @Simon-jr2oe
      @Simon-jr2oe 2 роки тому +3

      How much would it expand? I don’t rly see it expanding enough to be a problem

    • @midship_nc
      @midship_nc 2 роки тому +19

      @@Simon-jr2oe a rough formula for stainless thermal shaft for growth is length x temperature rise x .0000065(coefficient for stainless shaft growth)
      4.5"x140x0.0000065= .004"
      Then multiply that by 2 because there are two motors end to end which is over .008"
      8 thousandths converted to metric is 0.2mm+ and Raz said there was about a third of a mm clearance between the gears at ambient. Include the growth of the pinion gears themselves, or higher temperature and yes it could be contacting and creating an axial load on bearings not designed for such forces.
      Additionally these are "permanent" lubricated bearings and that oil will be vaporized by the heat and contribute to additional friction and losses.

      You're always going to be fighting flex, he really needs to pause and redesign the motor mount assembly to be monolithic. That's the only way you're going to get the required stiffness out of it..

  • @markmmm1737
    @markmmm1737 2 роки тому +57

    Looks good but I have doubts. Those gears will be stripped due to the power and the tiny area of contact.
    Personally I would turn around the motors and use 2 spools this will give you 4 times the surface area for the pinions and much less stress on the now doubled spool gears.
    Hope it works out for you, all the best.

    Raz - the machining and workmanship is absolutely top-notch! You are probably learning so much from this type of extreme build that many 'makers' would never get the experience to learn because of the sheer problems surrounding the power transfer alone. That doesn't even account for trying to keep everything inside of the car's footprint and map out where the parts need to go to make it work.
    Bravo on an amazing build.

      When talking about gear mesh, there is a small amount of tolerance allowed when setting the motors in place, however there is way less tolerance when attaching two shafts like that. Since they are rotating, any misalignment will cause an insane amount of stress on the components involved and most likely break something or loosen screws at a very fast pace.

  • @Greywolf74

    This is a really cool build for bragging rights but that thing isnt anywhere near 60HP. At best The quad motors are putting out somewhere between 35-40HP collectively. Thats assuming that each of those 1650kV motors on 8S consumes somewhere in the neighborhood of 6500-7500 watts each. Castle doesn't tell us the wattage ratings on their motors but a Hobbywing 1650kV on 6S is rated at 5700W. The really big TPPower motors can get up to around 9000W each so going somewhere in the middle of that (which I think is being a bit generous) at 7500W is only about 40HP. If you calculate for 7000W each then you end up at about 37.5HP total. Once you start taking other factors in to account like voltage sag, efficiency, etc youre probably looking at something closer to 30HP for all 4 motors combined. Id like to know how you arrived at 60HP.

    • @S3irun
      @S3irun 2 роки тому

      I think he did the following, simple calculation: If 2 motors are rated for 30HP, 4 motors add up to 60HP.

    • @Greywolf74
      @Greywolf74 2 роки тому

      @@trevorlaquale6602 10HP I think is still a stretch because I dont think thats taking things like efficiency, voltage sag, etc in to consideration but that number is at least in line with the upper end of what my HP calculations came out to based on Wattage approximations. Im curious though where you found the 10HP rating at because Castle doesnt list that info on their webpage, or at least not anywhere on the page that has the motor specs. You got a link to where you found that at? Im betting if you could Dyno a single 1650kV motor on 8S it would only dyno at maybe 6-8HP per motor.

  • @Ritex223

    Raz, please read this.
    Coming from a mechanical engineer perspective this construction is destructive, you cannot mount two motors that are connected directly to the same gear (and you are trying to connect 4). You must have some sort of an interface between them. Best case scenario a reverse differential, worse case a torque dampening coupling on every motor shaft. You absolutely must do that because the motors don't turn continuously, the poles of each motor always allign differently, therefore the motors experience torque ripples. In this case the torque ripples are rigidly transmitted to other motors which create motion interference, that's why the car sound bad in your newer videos. Motion interference leads to loss of efficiency and destructive forces on the motor and gearbox. I have experienced this on full size electric vehicles, believe me, this phenomenon can split gearboxes open. As I have mentioned, to avoid destruction and to get better results, you must install a differential or couplings.

That much power 60 hp you could literally put all 4 on a racing go kart and have a fast 60 hp electric beast it's possible I saw a guy on UA-cam put two giant brushless mamba biggest motors they make on his go kart and he hit 62 mph at 80 percent throttle he turned it up to 140 percent on his radio and it went 78 mph with out him on it testing with him on it he did 68 mph at 140 percent throttle rate on his transmitter. He uses just the transmitter for throttle everything else works like a reg go kart

    Hello, to be honest, I don't like that with the central pinion. In my opinion, this is too short and will ensure that the large motor pinions will warp. This will also put additional stress on the motor shafts.
    Either you get a longer central gear or you pin and screw the motor pinions against each other. The system runs syncronically anyway.
    The only problem you may have is that the motor shafts are not exactly aligned (parallel offset / angular offset), which again causes tension. So I think a longer central pinion would be the best solution!
    Otherwise it's a great project!

    The intermediate gear is installed in two, so there is no need to thin the motor gear, and the performance is more powerful.

    Looking at it from the distance, I'd say those gears would need a little case, for keeping them running in oil, as the "real" ones.

    Gotta check HP at the wheel. HP means nothing if ya can't plant it. In the end, like all things, it comes down to traction. Still going to be fun to watch.

    You could have used some 2 part epoxy and mix in some tiny shavings of carbon fiber, then sand down the old holes and the area around it and put some tape on the top side, then fill in the old holes with the epoxy with the carbon fiber shavings in it. You would want to put enough of the epoxy that it was built up higher than the area around it, then when it cured sand it smooth and flat. Then drill new holes and countersink them as well. What you did worked as well, but not everyone has access to a lathe like that lol.

    Next you need to try 6 motors. Ditch the center drive shaft as well

    Drive Shaft gear looks a lil thin...should be a lil thicker for 4 pinion gears....

    I'd make sure all those gears are well deburred. That will be critical to your mesh match

    The video got that many views because it was bad ass you need to do the part two of that video with the wider setup no one has tried that type of blade set up and it worked get

    Man that’s awesome but I don’t think them pinions will handle the power of them motors great video and love what you do keep it up can’t wait to see this beast running
