You did not understand the dialogue because Google does direct translation. This guy spoke in jargon. He refers to himself as "orang" which means "people". If you substitute the word "people" and "they" with the word " I" , then you would understand. His mother did not express her love for him just to toughen him up, because he is the youngest and probably spoiled and further more he has no farther to discipline him. 😢 In Islam, heaven lies beneath the mother's feet. No mother ever hates her child. Eid is a time to strengthen our love for both parents and for all ummah.
'Adik' means little sibling..can mean little brother or little sister.
based on this short ads, I guess you can understand that most Malaysians tend to hide our feelings and emotions a lot especially from our own families, so we suffer from silent depression and emotionally stunted. back then, we are considered as weak people if we show and express our emotions and feelings.

This is a true story too.
'Orang' means people in Malay.
But it is also used to refer to 'I' when we speak with family members (sometimes also said as 'oghang' or 'owang' in Malay).

Which makes this story even more heartbreaking.
Helmi used 'orang' with his mother, showing that he is so affectionate at heart, despite his outwards demeanour.

Most probably, the wrongdoings he did was to get his mother's attention. We saw that his mother didn't even show any reaction on the good things he did, and he had to clamour and compete for attention with other brothers.
This has been a topic of argument between me and my husband. Some Asian parents don't show their love and affection towards their children. The children, of course, want to hug and show affection to their parents. But they are not used to these lovey-dovey thingy. And the parents style, also, giving hints of rejection. This has resulted in some emptiness in their children's life and soul.
To me, if you love your children, make them know it and educate them how to love you in return. Do it before it is too late like this story.
I actually feel pity to this main character because he never feel loved and appreciated by his own mother and the entire family. Though this probably had made him tough, but it had made him emotionally handicapped and unsettled too. Unless, he and his mother could have a heart to heart dialogue and the mother could undo all the negative emotions felt by her son and they could reconcile and feel the love .... But this didn't happen in this story and he has to carry these heavy feelings entire of his life.

Family is very important when it comes to Raya (Eid) in Malay culture. During Raya, we normally seek for forgiveness from one another.. especially from our parents and family members.
So crucial that we usually dedicate an hour in the morning of the 1st day of Eid to ask for forgiveness from our family members in the most sincere way possible..this whole process normally will be very emotional as it involves exchange of emotions and tears. Its a time for us to forgive and forget and strengthen our relationships.
As such, in this video the guy is having regrets and remorse for not being able to do that with his mother, no matter what the feeling or past experience..family is always family.
And its also a custom to visit the grave of our loved ones during Eid.
P/s: I too, miss my beloved Mom who passed away few years ago.

So, your question is "why his mom didnt show the love for him".. i think it is the culture. Most of Asian, especially the Malay Culture rarely showing direct love to their kids . Trust me, i am a malay myself. We have to figure out ourselves whether our parent love us or not. They will provide everything from A to Z and until our funds to colleges and even they will give money to fund our weddings and they will gave the houses and other properties to us, but they will never show direct love. Thats our culture.
And we need to break this kind of culture. Break the cycle.

This is how I feel about this story. I'm guessing at his early life he likes to steal something from the villagers so him. So I think his mom being too strict on him so that he changed his behavior.
The scene where he was appointed as a school prefect (disciplinary supervisor) seemed to take place after few months, meaning his behaviour had improved and changed. Yet maybe his mother either have ego or was embarrassed to suddenly changed her approach towards him that she decided to kept their relationship that way till she passed away.

While I do agree that this kind of relationship may be backfired, sometimes at the same time it will also changed a child's way of life. Hence like in this based on true story, the son had changed his way of life and become successful.
But again, this kind of manner shouldn't be practiced tho especially if we know it will do more harm than good.
