Garnet's delivery of "I DIDN'T WRITE THAT" might be the hardest I ever laughed at anything in this show. The delivery was so perfect
bro I love her so much lol
garnet is most People's favorite (including me; my birthstone is a garnet) and I think the creator definitely intended so because even the show's own characters look up to her....estelle has a beautiful voice too
Lol yeah
Amethyst just seeks approval. She wasn't joking around, but she was emotional and wasn't thinking straight because of the fact she felt like she was being judged and because Steven's quiz made her start thinking about herself and like steven said, "she doesn't want to think about herself." Amethyst always puts on this sort of false confidence but once she feels like she's being judged, she crumbles
Yeah I kinda figured that out towards the end. Initially I just thought she was being literal.
Reforming after getting poofed is a gems permanent form until they get poofed the next time. While yes they can shape-shift they can’t do it forever as it drains some of their power over extended periods of time which is why garnet started to get upset with what amethyst was doing
That’s why garnet wants her to fit a form that fits both her body size and fighting style instead of faking something that she can’t sustain in an actual gem scenario
So Steven Universe is known for looking VERY different depending on who story boarded it. It's also a common joke that it's always off model. I'm also noticing that some of these episodes must have been made before the S1 finale because Garnet still has her original design.
Edit: to clarify, the design you noticed was different was her 2nd design from when she was poofed in the finale
This is a very important facts about fusions. Yes, they're the embodiment of a relationship, but it doesn't have to be a romantic relationship. Take Stevonnie for example, they are an example of a platonic relationship between friends. Ruby and Sapphire fused out of a romantic connection, but it doesn't have to extend to the other gems, like Sugilite
and I'm pretty sure sugilite is the embodiment of Ruby and Amethyst just wanting some chaos while Sapphire watches lol
Lol sure
very accurate explanation but stevonnnie is not platonic, they just never said outright that they like each other as more than friends, but its definitely shown
Truth, and Romantic Fusions can fall in love with others, take Flourite for example, a Polyamorous Fusion.
@@Iamnooneanymore Personally, I think Sapphire contributed a lot to Sugilite's lack of empathy. She could be pretty cold, both literally and figuratively.
10:56 They were drunk on power.
17:31 There's your new outfit lmao
19:26 Reforming is "permanent" (until a gem is poofed). Shapeshift is temporary. Reforming is also using your own "mass" in order to create a body, so if Amethyst tried to reform larger than she usually would be, it would hurt her or drain her. For example, reforming can be considered your base form, while shapeshifting is... that, shifting your shape.
20:38 It's neither of those, she's purposely taking Garnet's words and shifting them in the same manner you would tell a child to pick up their trash and they pick it up just to drop it again because "you told me to pick it up, not throw it in the trashcan". Amethyst at that point is emotional and acting as the type of people to get heated in an argument and just want to have the last word in.
22:00 Literally Scoot when a gem reforms and doesn't have over 20 accessories and a different body type.
How I view forming/shapeshifting is like, amethyst can’t reform a larger form cause that would be “stretching it too thin” if that makes sense. Her mass would be divided across a larger surface area, giving her less durability and strength
lmfaoooo the 22:00 part is so true 🤣🤣🤣
I loved Garnet's message.
You can be attracted to someone at first sight, infatuated. You can experience desire for them, want to be with them. But actual, true love? You don't love a person for their looks or the context of your first encounter. Love is something people build together by actually getting to know one another.
I think about this episode a lot.
Also, a while ago, I gave a rundown on all of the gems you've met. I realize that I completely forgot about Alexandrite, the fusion of Ruby, Sapphire, Amethyst, and Pearl.
Alexandrite is a form of chrysoberyl, a crystal of BeAl2O4; to get alexandrite specifically, some of the aluminum in the crystal should be chromium instead, which makes it change colors from green to red depending on the lighting. The name chrysoberyl comes from the Greek chrysos (gold, as in the color) beryllos (... beryl), so it's surprising that it's not actually related to beryl at all. Also surprising is that alexandrite wasn't named after Alexander the Great like everything else, but rather (maybe) in honor of Alexander II Romanov of Russia. 8.5 on the Mohs Scale. It symbolizes things like discipline, self-control, and concentration, which fit, since you've got four Gems that need to work together to maintain this form.
Spoilers for things past this point in general
I really like Garnet's message because after watching the entire show, Future, and the movie, it makes me think about Ruby and Sapphire's relationship. They might have thought it was love at first sight when Ruby first saved Sapphire but when you think about it, they didn't really fall in love for real for a while. Ruby saved Sapphire out of determination and concern, I think. I think Garnet's confusion with being her was Ruby and Sapphire really discovering what they liked about one another and falling in love, if any of that makes sense.
What I find super funny is that the cools kids are based on the Crystal Gems (At least design wise). Jenny is Amythest, Buck Dewey is Garnet, and Sour Cream is Pearl. I guess that makes Lars Steven.
WHAAAAAT i never realised that
Think of shapeshifting like flexing a muscle. You can hold it for a while, but after a bit you get tired and have to set back to your "ground state" where the muscle is just relaxed.
Reforming changes a gem's "ground state". Their default appearance. While shapeshifting is like flexing a muscle and it gets tiring after a while.
My interpretation was just that getting poofed is like turning off your computer . so while its off, why not update it. you can still change things while a computer is on, but some things require the hard reset. So maybe they can only set their default look while in their gems.
Fusion is a conversation so if both agree.
Garnets’ strong bonded ness keeps fusions together but Sugilite being a combo of all 3 also emphasized their good and bad qualities, ruby is quick tempered , sapphire’s calm, garnet mellows out, with Amethyst now in the mix and her negative tendencies and individualism makes Sugilite not the best when you need to going back to her base components.
also, in sugalite ruby and sapphire are each a 3rd. I know that sounds obvious but its easy to accidentally think of garnet as half of the fusion. ruby and amethyst together sounds like the scariest thing, and theres just one sapphire to try to balance all that fiestyness.
fusion isnt just about love its also about friendship and responsibility.
Nah
@@Theregulersonicfan the creator legit has said this on their tictok page but, okay, lol.
A form a gem takes is basically their base, and shapeshifting stretches them out of their base, draining power every time they do it.
the first time i watched the buck dewy episode idk but when he said "you really love your dad *its funny* " it hit me kinda hard
I like how you ask questions and theorize. You're so invested in the story which is why I think you're one of the best reactors of this show on UA-cam. Can't wait for more reactions man!
About shapeshifting and regeneration: their form is their default form, shapeshifting takes effort and can exhaust a gem if they shapeshift for too long.
Garnet's new form's colors are more vibrant, her hair is shorter (now chin length instead of shoulder length), the color of her pants is split down the middle before one leg was different starting at her hip, and her shoulder pads are sharper instead of more square shaped
My understanding of the different between reforming and shapeshifting is that shapeshifting is an act of exercising the power to temporarily change their shape, but reforming is changing their base self, changing their resting position that they are in when they’re not exercising the energy/effort to change their form
the thing about shapeshift or "poof respawn" is that it takes a lot of energy to keep a shapeshift and it can get even dangerous (touched on another episode later on the show)
so when they come back from their "repair", the appear with their "base" form, which they can handle for as long as they want
you’ve already noticed with the inconsistency in Garnet’s outfit, but yeah the episode order for the last eps of s1/start of s2 got a bit screwed up because CN changed them around in airing order. Open Book, Shirt Club, Say Uncle, and Story for Steven were all made for s1 and take place between Rose’s Scabbard and The Message. As far as I know the episode order for the rest of the show is correct everywhere, it’s just this section that got weird.
thats good to hear if true. the order was a little frustrating but thankfully didnt mess up anything big
Shapeshifting is a conscious act by a Gem that requires energy and concentration, especially if the modification is complicated. Re-forming is the new default version...as long as it's a stable form that the unchangeable false mass of the Gem can support the new form becomes the permanent version of that Gem.
Pearl took a lot longer to reform because as a perfectionist she felt she had to get things "just right". Amethyst takes the other extreme, and re-forms so quickly that random re-booting errors are included in the new form. Garnet takes the middle course, taking just enough time to iron out any possible major re-forming faults without going overboard like Pearl.
Shape shifting question (this also gets explained more in the show)
Their forms are light forms form their consciousness. But their default is their personal image. Shape shifting to them is like us changing clothes but it takes energy to manipulate their physical form.
Reforming is like their...regular form I guess, they take time to "create it". Shape-shifting takes concentration and energy so Shape-shifting a permanent form isn't viable.
Yeah, isn’t there an episode where Pearl get spoofed and takes absolute forever to reform.
@@_____________a_a 2 weeks
@@sanji_joestar And that was likely because the Holo Pearl was still active, probably stealing energy Pearl could have been using for her reformation
@@KlooKloo maybe overall it's just pearl being pearl, just meticulous🤣
@@sanji_joestar Amethyst even says she's never taken that long before
12:23 Garnet has the best one-liner deliveries in the entire show, it's not even close.
2:23 the delivery here was so accurate, I thought it was in the show for a second haha
The reason they choose to reform after poofing rather than shapeshifting is because shapeshifting takes energy so it's only a temporary strain. Whereas poofing lets gems reform their bodies from scratch permanently.
Also, a fun little fact that's never mentioned in the show: Gems are solar powered, if you're wondering where they get the energy to do all the magical stuff and all.
I think its so funny that all the kid and teen side characters get at least one episode focused on them...except Petey XD
Reforming is like there default shape they permanently take (until they get poofed again) while shape shifting is temporary and takes energy to sustain
When shapeshifting they have to constantly focus and use energy and effort to keep their shape, but when reforming that becomes their new default and so they don't need to constantly focus on keeping that shape.
I love when you pause all the time it's so goood 🤩🤣 talking to yourself with your theories x)) it's amazing
Shape shifting takes a lot of energy so it can't be permanent, now the form they choose after got puff it's permanent and reflect their personality and amethyst couldn't go so quick because of that.
Hope it helped
in the first episode you can see that garnet has the old outfit. I love the episode where amethyst is poffed
It's kinda interesting how a gem's personality affects how long they stay in their gems before reforming. Amethyst takes like 5 minutes and Pearl 2 weeks.
It’s not their personality but depends on how long the gem decides to take before reforming and making their new form
Reforming is like the base form that doesn't require effort or focus to keep once formed.
Shape-shifting requires effort and focus to keep the form.
From my point of view, regeneration and new forms in gems is like a way of expressing who you are and how you want to be seen. Who they feel they are in that state of their lives.
So it is not like when they are shape-shifting, that's using their powers or transforming their whole body or parts for x reason (like amathist usually does playing around, or even garnet did sometimes making her hands bigger) Because those random and short transformations doesn't have to have a meaning themselves. They can be chosen because of a need in that exact moment or to fulfill a specific goal.
But when you choose your form, it is your own projection to the world (figuratively and literally, they don't have real form XD that's what I love about this visual metaphor) so when amathist is not taking this seriously it is a really deep thing happening. She is not thinking about who she is, how she feel, or who she wants to be to others. She is just repressing feelings and not accepting herself (as we saw before during the kindergarten episode)
Mostly because she feels left behind and not as respected as others (like pearl)
That's why garnet was so upset during the whole episode, she wanted amathist to understand herself and reflect who she really is.
So when Steven said something like 'she barely changed' for garnet was something good. Because amathist doesn't have to be like any other than herself to be loved and Garnet is the one who knows the most about loving and accepting others since she is a fusion herself.
Basically, your new form is a way of getting to know yourself better, feel better about yourself and become your best version (like Christmas goals XD) meanwhile shape-shifting is just a simple gem hability
The writers seem to consider every character important. One way or another, they all get at least one episode.
reforming is like their new "base form" but shapeshifting isn't sustainable forever because it takes concentration and energy. however for small changes like their outfits (think back to pearl's space suit or the gems in their beach outfits) they can do that just fine, though probably still not forever. and also there isnt much reason to shapeshift a new outfit usually. but when they reform they just stay like that no effort
i also wanted to say in case no one else has pointed it out, when gems reform it flashes through their old forms which is usually harder to notice, but amethysts is very obvious because of her big arm/big leg form and pearl form
The difference between regeneration and shapeshifting is that when a gem regenerates, they're deciding what their base form looks like.
And when a gem shapeshifts, it takes energy to maintain that shapeshifted form. They have to eventually go back to their base form or risk exhausting themselves.
Love at first sight DOES exist but true love takes time.
About one of your first comments, a larger issue with production was that the animation went off model quite often, which could give weird perspectives.
You can kinda tell that Shirt Club is supposed to be in S1 cause Garnet is in her old fit, but Love Letters and Reformed are S2
12:14
I'm laughing when Jamie made the face expression
🤣🤣🤣🤣
the animation/arstyle can change slightly depending on who worked on the episode, for example Paul Villeco has a very distinct (imo) style for the episodes they storyboarded
And btw, when a gem get poofed, they can decide what their new physical form will look like and be - permanantly. Shapeshitting is just temporary
fusion represents any type of relationship/dynamic. romantic love, friendship, or to compete an objective by being giant, powerful, fast, etc. so sugalite isn't formed because amethyst/garnet have romantic feelings, as garnet said in the episode "we just need to be huge". whereas Garnet is formed to merely exist, since Ruby and Saph want to be together all the time
Bet you weren't expecting the "buy t-shirt cannons" t-shirt cannon to get a call back, but here we are.
They can’t stay shapeshifted forever, but changing your form does stay forever, or atleast until they get poofed again
You know Garnet did get a new fit right. Before, she wasn’t like a half and half of red and blue. Also, to answer your shapeshifting and regeneration question. Shapeshifting doesn’t last forever but when you regenerate it lasts forever at least until you get poofed again.
Yes when Garnet got poofed her color palette changed a bit with her shoulder pads
the reason the characters look so different is bc they use different animators every now and then, rebecca said it’s a good way to give artistic freedom
So after "Reformed", that's where all the S2 shorts would be a great fit.
Steven Universe has two sets of shorts, one for S2 and one for S4.
The S2 shorts are:
We Are The Crystal Gems (extended intro)
Unboxing
Lion Loves To Fit In A Box
alongside three other shorts in a different style called The Classroom Gems. The three there are:
What Are Gems
How Are Gems Made
Fusion
Right about now, after Reformed, would be a good time to watch all of those. All of them together are roughly the length of a full episode or two.
You also still need to watch the Pilot episode, which is the episode from the first pitch of the show, before it was greenlit. It has a completely different art style, but a lot of its pieces later got reused in various full episodes.
Most (all?) of these shorts are available completely for free legally on UA-cam, on CN's own YT channels.
Don't watch the S4 ones though, those would spoil stuff. Only watch the ones I mentioned above.
We Are The Crystal Gems (extended intro), Unboxing, Lion Loves To Fit In A Box, What Are Gems, How Are Gems Made, Fusion. The others are for later.
Shape shifting is not permanent because it takes a toll on your body and you have to use there power to do that. When getting poofed then they come back as what they want their body to look like. It’s permanent until they get poofed next time and go that whole process again .
Reforming is basically the Gems choosing a new default form. Shape-shifting takes energy while being in their default form doesn't. The smaller the shape-shifting form is, the less energy it spends.
It takes time for Gems to reform because they are literally designing what they are gonna look like. Like being in a character creator.
Amethyst is impatient & doesn't really like to think about herself, so she tends to take a shorter time to decide how she'll look.
Meanwhile, Pearl is a thinker & meticulous, so she tends to take a longer time to decide how she wants to look.
These new outfits tend to represent how the Gems have changed as people.
I love how he talks about multiple gem fusion when
spoiler
were introduced to fluorite later on who’s a multiple gen fusion
Just noticed they used Garnet's before destabilization design in the Buck Dewey's episode
Ok story for Steven the last episode in previous video and 1st (shirt club) in this set is season one. Ahh well guess Hulu fouled up.
Hope you are enjoying the show
Shape shifting has a time limit they can only hold it for so long until they get tired with their gen powers & Ruby likes amethyst roughhousing and fight ability Sapphire likes amethyst goofy funny persona (remind her of Ruby) that’s why they stayed feused long because both Like Amethyst personality and thoughts & fusions can fall in love with other people but sometimes the two people fusing can force it back
Also jesus i forget that they literally reference the assassination of John F Kennedy with how Dewey fell from being hit by a Shirt. So damn wild!
i always wondered about the reforming time too.
maybe its different for each gem? or different for each type of gem? like for example, maybe pearls take a week or so to reform, while quartzes, rubies and sapphires take only a few hours.
I mean it makes sense for quartzes like amethyst to reform faster since theyre supposed to be soldiers. They must reform fast to keep fighting and stuff.
idk. i don tthink this was ever explained.
difference between shapeshifting and reforming is shapeshifting takes energy and you can only hold that shapeshifted form for a certain amount of time before getting tired. Reforming is almost permanant in a way, at least until they reform again
When shapeshifting, it takes energy and focus to hold a form, so it can't be done indefinitely. Reforming is more permanent.
Reforming is their new base form, however, shape shifting takes energy. Amethyst is really good at shape shifting, however, even she can't maintain a different shape indefinitely.
About there ability to reform/shapeshift”
I always viewed it as there forms have 3 levels and they have different ranges of control of them
Level 1 is there cloths and hair which they can change at will with no struggle at all like when they change into there beach cloths or how amethyst used to have short hair
Level 2 there “body” temporarily changing there body shape with out proofing but they have to consciously “hold” the form or else they turn back which is the shapeshifting
Level 3 there “base form” which are things about there form they CANT stray from like hight, width, length, color limb numbers etc which is why amethyst “forms” weren’t stable because she was straining her base form not just the “aesthetic”
Which is also why poofing&reforming time versus from gem to gem because it’s based on how much effort/time they take on designing it
Also f when they reform there “light” shifts threw all there past forms before actually reforming
1st episode here definitely should've been in season 1, before the political power episode (which also featured Mayor Dewey, so there would be that continuity), you can tell by Garnet having her Pre-Jailbreak episode form. Hulu seriously needs to fix their episode order format
I do believe love at first sight doesn't exist. But attraction at first sight does exist
10: When you got to the question about Garner and amethyst that confuse me because I wonder what they make them want to stay together for a long time but it could be because amethyst had a lot of bottled up anger and she kinda was in control of Suga light more than Garnet was due to amethyst anger in her emotions
You can't hold Shape ship forever because it used power unlike poof and then make new permanent form that you don't have to use power , you'll see it in a the next more episodes when on steven birthday
Amazing Reaction Scoot!!!!!!! ^^ This Episode brings back memories!!!!!! ^^
When it comes to shapeshifting they can't hold it forever
Reasons for fusion come in many forms, I can see how it can be confusing.
Steven+Connie (stevonnie) is platonic friendship.
Ruby+Saphire (garnet) is from a romantic love
Garnet+pearl+Amethyst (Alexandrite, Opal or Sugelite) work relationship/battle
Jasper+Lapis (malachite) Formed from battle but turned into a toxic relationship/toxic co-dependinship/formed from revenge and held together by force from Lapis’s side
Reformed formed is the base form. Shapeshifting is a temporary thing, reformation is more permanent.
The Buck Dewey episode is before jailbreak when Garnet is poofed and sapphire and Ruby re-fuse back together into the more purple form so she has her old red-ish design. Idk why some of these episode orders are out of wack
Idk fusion is a literal amalgamation of the 2 or more gems on garnet’s case it’s a romantic relationship there for there’s no space for jamie
it's very hard to stay shapeshifted for a long time, especially for a gem like amethyst. for other gems it is easier tho
Awesome, I don't mind two or three episodes both are chill
"Too dense" heheh
Amethyst is going through her life and she’s trying to figure out how to love herself and she doesn’t right now she’s taking over all these weird forms because she’s trying to appease everybody else she doesn’t want to think for herself she wants people to make her choices for her however she doesn’t even like listening to people she has to follow her own destiny but being childish isn’t gonna fix anything she should’ve took time
Amethyst is an incredibly insecure character, it's not that she's dense it's that she doesn't feel good enough
Its because the shapeshifting isn't permanent it'll wear off after a while, but when you change form it's permanent until you get poofed again.
Shape shifting for gems is the same as us flexing our muscles, if you hold it too long, you'll hurt yourself
14:10 love at first sight doesn't exist, but attraction at first sight does
I love it when you watch the Mayor Dewey episodes :)))
as a brit, love when you imitate garnet
hulu got the episode so out of order, the first episode is supposed to be before the s1 finale
3 episodes once is good ,but if you think 2 is easier it's ok ,too.
Just join the show in your way.^^
That first episode you reacted to was 10000% a Season 1 episode, garnet's Outfit is still the early season 1 one and that would also explain why the animation was so weird HBO Max fucked up the episode orders.
Yeeeeah garnet be spittin straight bars oml
She chose to take the form of pearl because the devil is the last person they spoke of before she got hurt normally it takes a few days for the gym gets to choose what form they take when they emerge out of there Crystal allegedly
Fusion is the ultimate bond betwen gems, Just like Bonds betwen humans, they could be platonic or Romantic, Garnet has no problem making a fusion because it is a Platonic relationship betwen her and amethyst, but Jamie wanted to be in a romantic relationship with her.
Shapeshifting is a Physical Hability takes energy and gets harder to mantain, While poofing and regenerating is like getting out of a cold, "I feel Like new" and just like a cold they need to regenerate themself wich in that episode Amethyst didn't wanted to be seen as weak, and keep saying she was fine (Just like some stubborn people with colds lmao)
Nice video, can't wait for you to react to more episodes!
it can be a bit confusing how The gems form works
I'm gonna explain
The shape shifting is different from getting a new form after proofing
Think about it this way when gems regenerate they set a new form as a foundation for their appearance and that's who they look sure they can shape shift to any thing but it puts a strain on them so they would have to eventually go back to the foundation that was made Aka the form they get after proofing
You might ask then why not make the basic form strong from the get go But here is the catch every gem has certain limit to how they can alter that foundation like a certain hight, weight and strength if you go beyond that the form becomes unstable like with what Happened this episode.
Yes regular Sonic
This is indeed a paragraph
(BIG SPOILERS)
If the constant shape shift puts strain on them, how was PD able to retain her Rose Quartz form this whole time? Is it because she's a powerful gem?
@@af3897( huge spoiler)
.
.
.
.
.
.
First she is you know who her power is stronger than normal gems
.
Second she was switching between the 2 forms
After the garnet first fusion when pink and pearl escape the first thing she does is shift back
And she always had her room in the temple to relive the strain her time in the fountain and let's not forget liked wandering the desert where the Lions were
@@abd-elra7man268 ohh that makes a lot of sense
shapeshifting is more like stretching your body while fusion is about the form of ur body I think
10:00 Some poly relationships have this thing where one person is involved only if the other two are involved if Ixm not mistaken, so maybe it could work like that? (Polys, correct me if I'm wrong plz) Other than that, I'd say it's possible, but perhaps the feelings would change for all participants when the two are separate, or maybe it would be like a threeway poly relationship where they are all in love with each other
Keep in mind tho fusions can be any type of relationship, not just romantic. From what I understand here, Garnet isn't polyromantic, but fusing with Amethyst doesn't count since that is not a romantic relationship (not that I know of anyway)
Well reforming is permanent. Shape-shifting consumes energy and doesn't last.
Ik i am late but shape shift is temporary and it takes energy but when you get poofed and get a new form its permanent unless you get spoffed and change again
We already had a jenny episode, she was part of the pizza gang when they played volleyball
Well, fusion isn't necessarily a romantic relationship. Fusion is just representative of any kind of relationship between its parts.
Guaranteed, Garnet represents an established romantic relationship & Stevonnie represents young love, crushes, & even best friend relationships.
Opal, in a way, represents a sibling relationship.
And Malachite represents a toxic/abusive relationship.
Gem's need's to rest longer but amethyst forces to reform faster which messes her form (Not sure with the longer rest thing)
