As with all projects there are variations in component parts available. The original crane used very thin dowels(4mm diameter) and the more up to date version uses 6mm dowels. It’s even possible to use 6mm plastic straws instead. One thing to note about the larger diameter pivot dowel or straw is that it will be a tighter fit in the hole so you may have to repeatedly use a pencil as a drill to slacken it off a little otherwise the crane arm or ‘jib’ might not lower down as easily and may get stuck.
