  • Finally Mini have entered the electric car market, with arguably the most important Mini since BMW brought back the R53 Mini. I was given exclusive access to the Mini Plant Oxford to see how this new and innovate EV is put together. The car has been designed to by assembled on the same line as petrol and diesel cars...truly fascinating.
Then I was lucky enough to be one of the first people to drive the new Pocket Rocket.....and wow it was good fun !
A big thanks to Mini UK for the invite.

I am a keen follower of yours, and re watched this today. I ordered one around the time of your video, and have had it now about 4 months. At the time, I didn't realise how much praise you were giving the little thing. I agree with everything you say about it - it is the most fun car I have ever owned. It is my 4th mini (2 old, 2 new) and I absolutely love it. One thing to note is that the range is actually almost spot on. I am averaging about 144 miles per charge (if I were to drive till empty) since the day I picked it up. Some days I use more when I am having a bit of fun, and some days I use less when I play follow the leader in traffic. The best I saw was 270km (about 170 miles). Easily enough for a daily driver. I know this is an older video, but I thought it was worth the comment. Keep up the good work!

How does the Mini E cope with our amazing uk roads Pete? 3 years ago, the roads probably weren't as bad, as they are now. I have a BRG 3 dr, 1.5 manual at the moment. But its not very comfortable on the 17" alloys with standard tyres( not runflats). I am a Mini fan, so hoping the electric Mini will be my next buy. Really enjoyed your video. Especially at the start, where we get to see a cut away car, showing the position of the batteries etc👌

you know, I hear what you are saying about making it a bit more edgey, I also can see that building it on the same assembly line brings down costs and this car (for me with incentives) is 1/2 the price of the cheapest Tesla model 3. I own a Tesla model Y but need a second car. I know that 80% of my drives are less than 100 miles. and I have a car that can already do much more than that if needed.. so this car will be perfect for 80% of the drives in our house. if we need to haul more people or stuff or even tow something.. the Model Y is it.. if we need to pop down to the grocery store or to home depot or to pick up my son at school. the Mini is perfect. it's a fine edge.. keep it inexpensive or make it edgy.. or make it edgy and lose some of that quirky Mini charm.. I sort of love the toggle switches (coming from a Tesla with zero switches) again.. this would be a difficult car as the Only car in the household.. when we bought ours, we were told that the majority of people are buying this as their third car.. a car to share with a new driver, or again.. for quick trips and for just driving fun

Great review. Funny about that “1st car” / “2nd car” thing. We are in Australia, a country not noted for its adoption of EVs. Our 2012 Nissan Leaf, now with a real world range of only about 100 kms, is our everyday commuter, doing 60kms a day. Therefore, because it is our most driven vehicle (ie daily driver) it is actually our 1st car. Our 2nd car, a diesel Pug, sits glowering in the garage until we need it for a long distance trip. 👍

It almost seems like 1959 when my Dad saw the first Morris Mini Minor at Bristol Motor Company and filled with enthusiasm ordered a crimson Deluxe with grey/red seats for £524 complete. I still have the invoice. Sadly my Mum could not understand the tiny wheels and in the end we didn’t get it but it did when I bought my 1961 Austin Se7en in 1966. Your film seemed to take me back those 60 years...I configured one a few days ago...Level three in red with a white roof...we are supposed to be buying a house next week but it has been a tortuous job and might still fail...if it does..I’m getting that Mini for my wife...🙂🙂🙂 Safe driving Peter...one day it will stop raining..fingers crossed.😀😀😀😀

200 ish miles with one rapid charge is doable for a longing trip with planing. i still feel that with this new generation of Ev’s i’m not interested in anything with less 200 + miles per charge. The mini is very cute but range is range. I’ll probably buy a used Kia Niro as my next car with real world range of 220 per charge however un cool it is in terms of looks. This car is a great little city car but having owned an i3 the charge infrastructure has to improve rapidly to curb rang anxiety, pardon the pun!

  • @spacedevice47
    @spacedevice47 4 роки тому

The range is absolutely fine for most people, BUT on maybe the rare occasion you need to drive 70+ miles somewhere it's going to be an issue of planning charging stops with range anxiety. If they'd made it with a 200 mile range I think the car would have been perfect. Looks great BTW.

@@MC-nb6jx But MC, mate, with respect - and absolutely no offense - you're working with out of date thinking: First up, the powerstation thing: Electric cars charge at night. There are gigawatts of surplus production available at night right now. Gigawatts.
Some extra capacity will eventually be needed but we could add 4 million electric cars to the grid next week and the grid would be absolutely fine. Where do I get this information from? National Grid PLC. And they should know.
Yes we need more charge points for terraced housing etc. but 60% of all properties in the UK already have suitable off street parking. That's a lot of people. And many cars can share a single point: you don't always charge every single night.
The infrastructure is already under construction and will be growing a LOT in the next 10 years.
And a Duracel is a very ancient type of battery. An EV battery is a different chemistry entirely and it thermally managed to maintain cell health. There was an article on a Zoe from a couple of weeks ago that has done 250,000 miles: the battery still has 96% of it's rated capacity. The battery on that car will outlast the car.
Tesla are working on a battery that they will warranty for 1 Million miles. Two very, very long car lifetimes.
So perhaps not ideal for you, granted, but a lot of people could go electric tomorrow.

I own this car - I've had it about a week now. Its fantastic - its simply the best car I've ever owned.
Everyone goes on (and on) about the range. Well I can tell you, that most people who live in a city will never do more than 100 miles in a day. I'm getting a projected 140 out of mine - which is more than enough for a daily driver. People forget that you drive an EV differently - you drive then plugin at night. They are thinking like a petrol head - drive until its empty. Or like I used to think - how many days can I go before filling up for 50 quid a pop (3 days in my case).... Thats the wrong way to think. Put it this way - who fills their petrol car EVERY DAY? No one. But thats how you drive an EV - you plug it in at night - every night. So you have a full "tank" every morning .... for just pennies.
Its only those few and far between long trips you need the range. But thats not what the mini-e is for - If you need the range for regular long trips, then the mini wont be for you.
My work commute is 50 miles each way. I have trips to shops, the kids homes, and the beach once in a while. 100 miles is more than enough range for me - and the Mini gives me 40 more in reserve. Job done.

I wish more reviewers would let people know its cheaper to run, maintain, tax, etc. Depending on, what your old petrol/diesel was, your new EV, your mileage & where you charge the saving could be in the €1000's every year when you switch

Great review - love the enthusiasm and credibility that you’ve driven so many minis. We own a mini one and I also lease a Leaf. So I can agree wholeheartedly with your analysis ie: this is a brilliant SECOND car. My Leaf does 150 miles at best and honestly that’s not quite enough for a primary family car. But if you are well off enough to afford this as the second everyday car for running about, ferrying the kids around etc, it looks perfect.

The interior for me is stellar, I dont like the blandness of the Tesla. However that could just be what I'm used too. I generally dont like a large screen pumping out light while im driving so for me the Mini is perfect. I drive a lot at night so it's a huge deal when considering driving comfort. Loads more to add but I have to do some engineering first so I'll pick it back up later, cheers keep up the good work!

How you haven’t been approached for your own TV show is beyond me. The filming in the factory was brilliant, this was the one part I didn’t think they allow and all credit to BMW Mini for for this. The eMini seems to be a great contender and hope becomes the leader of the pack. Was keen for your impressions being Mini mad! Shame the battery technology is still only permitting the 100 mile range mark as did hope it would have been more. Will be interesting to see in 5 years time what develops. Agreed.
      Most important Mini my ass.
      What a pretentious tosser.
The most important mini is the one that first started this, the model that showed up at Monte Carlo in the 1960's the model that remained essentially unchanged for over 20 years.
I've owned and worked on the original and it was a fantastic bit of design and used almost every single square inch of what little space it had.
This mini, is a pale imitation of it and it shows.
Where the original Mini was an everyman's car, Britain's Ford Model T, this BMW Mini is a fashion purse, fat, overweight, with horrible utilization of space and over priced fashion item.
Where the original took on cars that had more power than it had and beat them at Monte Carlo, Bathurst and other tracks and rallies across the world and in doing so became a legend
This BMW is but an pale echo of past glory.

The issue is not making electric cars the issue is going to be infrastructure, just look at the carnage required behind those parked cars to deliver some charge so you could get back to the factory
Imagine the day when every car on the M25 is electric and we have a major hold up,snow, accident etc and a few people didn’t get a full charge the night before! All of a sudden you could have 100’s of immovable cars stranded,Will they be airlifted off as you can’t just drop a can of fuel into them
Also just imagine what service areas will look like. Every single car parking space at Clacket Lane and every other service area will need to have all its bays electrified,I don’t think that’s possible!
When I was in the trade before I retired to put one fast charger in a dealership the electricity board had to install a new substation on the estate to provide the power required. The cost was down to us, £150k to provide electric for just a couple of rapid chargers!!! We declined
I just can’t see anyway we are going to get enough power to places like service areas for full electrification to become the norm.
Also what is the actual requirement for the BIG BOXES ( power stations) the other end to provide all this power?
With what is just the handful of electric cars we now have electric charging points are not always easy to find or have queues, when there are 100’s of thousands of cars it will be carnage, you won’t be able to charge away from home
Here’s a question,in the post codes N,E,W,S etc how many homes are there,if forced to go electric how many of those people (%) do you think would be able to get finance on a 25-35k car and even afford it. Also in those post codes how many people live in high rise blocks or just have off street parking
If we are saying that those people just won’t be able to have cars because of their living circumstances then I can see chaos
Electric cars may well become something that only those with the income and properties than can facilitate home charging will be able to buy!
I think it is a very ill conceived and impractical solution to work on mass
Just google street view for any road in the above areas and ask how is it going to work if every parked car you see has to be converted for an electric one?

      @barry4347 4 роки тому +1

Ade Matthews Yes I don’t disagree there will be a gradual change, however the danger could be if councils start to put rings around towns where non electric cars will either be named or heavily taxed
Look at the ULEZ zone,it’s already spreading,it will also get more draconian on which cars will be charged to enter it!
Very soon you will be quite surprised at the types of car that will have to pay a ULEZ charge for each and every day they are used

I think it’s sacrilege to build petrol cars when you have an electric car. They require more commitment to the electric car and not bother with the petrol version because the ice engine has some 1200 moving parts whereas the electric has about 12. If there were more battery factories to drive down the cost of batteries then the electric car would be cheaper than the petrol car.

There was a lad on the radio (LBC) yesterday - after the government announcement about banning new petrol and diesel cars from 2030. He was an electrical engineer and he said it has been widely discussed amongst his peers that the UK power infrastructure in domestic areas is not physically able to support electric car charging on the scale that will be required. The cabling to houses and street lighting (a suggestion has been made for street lights to have charging built in) cannot possibly cope with the demand and is already struggling and needs constant repair. It is estimated that the countrywide upgrade would cost £trillion and couldn't be done by 2030.
Mates and I already discussed this (being a persecuted diesel car driver!!) and noted that filling up my car at the local Sainsburys takes about 2 minutes start to finish and they have 18 pumps and you STILL have to queue Fri-Sun. How are they going to have enough chargers when it takes hours for each car? Motorways will be littered with cars that were trying to find an available charging point. It will be like a scene from Mad Max where people are killing each other for fuel (or Duracells!)

Great video as always. Your enthusiasm certainly really came through and presented the Mini E as a viable 'second car'. Certainly in my case as a second car I think it would fit the bill exactly. With reference to your comments about the interior, I think that maybe they steered away from too much change to ensure that the price point could be maintained which is probably a sensible decision and also as you say its still very much a Mini. Very much looking forward to more content from you - maybe a video about actually living with it in the real world would be good. Keep up the fantastic work that you do!

Unfortunately, the range is not even close to being practical.
Most people agree that it is more of a 120 mile range car, however, real world range will be less (110?), Factor in the range loss in the winter (while using heaters) then you are *potentially* going to have a winter real world range of less than 100 miles.
For me, I drive 45 miles to work 45 miles back, assuming I don't stop/detour, so this *will not work for me*.
I know it is a small car, however, I have to wonder if they used the best battery layout (from the video, it looks like a "T" vs. a skateboard layout) or if they just need a more efficient drivetrain ?
I always loved the design of the Mini, and really hope the interest in the Mini Electric will provide incentive for them to make a more practical, long range version of the Mini.

I'm 80 now, and I've been a car freak all my life. The only real engine is a big V8 putting out at least 500 hp and at least 450 to 500 ft lbs of torque. Enough to almost make you pee your pants when you put the peddle down. I've owned so many cars I can't even remember all of them all. I'll stick with gasoline thank you. Its top of my list now, and I am planning to use it as my main commuter car for a near 90 mile round trip each day. The range seems perfect for that, even if in winter there is the chance that that is close to the theoretical limits factoring in cold etc etc. Yawn. Presumably you can't get 2 mountain bikes in the back. But a very interesting review my man! The range is only "kind of" an issue, as my regular trips away mean that 120 miles is well over half distance, so a 30 min charge could be on the cards. But, nd it's a big ol' butt, the fact that there are no charging points within 2 miles on my side of the river Exe is a nissue, as is the fact that my house is 3 houses down from the parking area. I can't accept the new-ish Clubman as, even with this being the "new " Mini, that I'm supposed to hate, I have a purist feeling about it. All this leads to me keeping my Astra estate. All of that completely misses the point of this car. It’s a Mini.
A lot of EVs are pig ugly & it seems most EV testers spend their time with a half misted up windscreen driving at 45mph to see how much range they can get.

What do mini say about charging practices? Tesla don’t want you regularly charging to 100% in order to protect the battery longevity, unless of course you’re going on a road trip. If we follow that practice with the mini, the range is suddenly very poor indeed.

    • @PetrolPed
      @PetrolPed  4 роки тому

Not charging to 100% is not so much about potential damage to the battery, which is a myth to be honest, but all about effective charge time. The first and last 20% of a battery take the longest to charge so for the most efficient charge time you are best operating between 20 and 80% 👍
