I have a 2005 Alfa 156 1.9 16v 148hp, and wouldn't change it even for a lot of newer vw's and Peugeots! Reliable, drives really good, feels great, cheap maintenance, a lot of parts available, looks great, low consumption... 🇮🇹🍀
For anyone interested On the 29th of May 2020 I did 146, miles from a near empty tank On 10.1 liters of diesel. On a 2001 Peugeot 406 2.0 HDI 124871 thousand miles. Enjoyd every mile.
Alfa 156 1.9 jtd is also a rocket compere to this two ... 0-60 takes 10 sec and average consumption is 5 l on 100 km,and it will last longer!JTD is the best and the first common rail diesel engine in europe
Unfortunately the usual VW bias you would expect from the motoring press - the 406 is described as getting from 0 - 60 in a "tedious" 12.5s but the Passat's 0 - 60 of a "shade over 12.5s" is "perfectly acceptable", so slower is better because it has a VW badge.........
Actually, Richard was wrong. If he was driving a TDI PD it couldn't have less than 115 hp at that time (that's the first PD engine VW had introduced on Passat B5) and the 0-60 time for this car is actually 10.5 s...way faster than the Peugeot. LAter on, Peugeot came with a revised 2.0 HDI engine which produced 109 hp, in order to match the performance of their competitors. Oh...and they were wrong again when saying that only Alfa Romeo engine came with direct diesel injection. All 3 cars were equiped with high pressure direct injection systems (Alfa and Peugeot - Common rail; VW - Pumpe Dusse)
+Dan Bucurica the 2.0 HDi was available from the start with 90 or 110 bhp in the Citroen Xantia. then developed a 16v version for the Synergie and later models, with power raising to 138, 150, 160 and 180bhp
The 110hp HDI is actually a bit older than the 90hp one. The 110 was available from october '98 in both the 406 and the Xantia, the 90hp one became available in april '99. I just don't get why they didn't test the 110 here though. Would be a much more fair comparison I think...they do claim the 406 is the most expensive car there, but I guess that's probably just 'cause they've got a top of the line model. The Passat and 406 were pretty similarly priced, at least here in the Netherlands, the Passat actually being a bit more expensive.
I've had a few 156's and currently have a 2.4 JTD pushing 180 hp ( It's a 140 hp engine that's been remapped ) and giving around 45 mpg after doing 151,000 miles, if the rust doesn't get them they can go on forever and are a lot of fun.
Yeah i don't agree with Ginny on that, i had one of these in the exec model, it was a looker and very stylish, most comfortable car ive owned, had it 5 years and loved it
this all is tragical journalism, 406 can't be boring because it is at least as stylish as alfa, they compare cars with different power, 406 with 90 hp, passat with 115 hp and alfa with 136 hp.
alfa diesel(common rail and also very powerful and sweet delivery without vibrations) hat light years beyond technology then tractor VW :) , and pumpe düse also the most unreliable, noisy and rattle diesel, with worst power delivery. the problem is not the reliability in 156, very bead chosen plastical materials inside and very small boot. they made it excellent with 159 but a real car fan can still buy 156....(i did not see any rusted 156 yet but there are many passats with rusts)... forget old cliche's alfa is the best to drive and own. but 156 interior is a question mark, check 159 better.
I have two passats one is a 1.8t and the second is 1.9 tdi they dont have rust and they dont have problems its his opinion he is a alfa lover i can see
I have owned both a 406 (2.2 HDi) and Passat (2.0 TDi). The Peugeot was impeccably reliable. The VW was hideously unreliable and outrageously expensive to fix. Better than both these cars I ran a BMW 528i (E39) which was sensationally good to own. The BMW costly ownership myth is just that.
morrow Because they were going for family cars, and a Coupé which looks cramped in the rear (though it really isn't!) and which cannot seat 5 people, is not exactly a family car choice. But of course it's an excellent vehicle. One of the most beautiful cars ever built on the outside. The inside... took a while. There's not a whole lot aesthetically wrong with the shape of the dashboard (could be a tad better to be honest) and Recaro simply makes the best seats in the world, but it took them like 5 iterations until they decided to use two-tone steering wheels and leather covered console, which is when they started to look the part on the inside.

I still have an Alfa 156 1.9 JTD from 2000. I love this car and will never sell it. Compared to the boring Passat and Peugeot, the Alfa brings every day a smile on my face.
I've had a 2.2L HDi 136cv Peugeot 406 for about 10 years and to be honest, this is still a beautiful car when the Passat (which wasn't yet restyled in the video) looks horrible today. Of course the second version of the Passat is way better. But I have to say that I hate the Alfa, the front part is just disgusting...
If I remember well, the Passat had not yet introduced Common rail version, rather, it had the inferior Pump duisse - noisy and thirsty Diesel design. It should have come last in the review.
+XTad1 Efficient - No. Reliable - probably. But the reveiwers were clueless Technical facts and pegged their verdict on their personal biases which we can always predict ie VW= Good, Peugeot = Bad.
Wrong. What you are referring to as "noisy and thirsty" is pre-chamber diesel designs. What made diesels awesome was direct injection. And Passat (and Audi) was first to have it. In the video this is not even PD engine, this is the high pressure Bosch VE system. Very reliable and economy is just as good as PD and Commonrail. Maybe few percent lower.
Low and behold the Passat has lasted the longest. See more B5 Passats than the 406's maybe just my area but the Passat doesn't look that old or out of place in 2018 roads
Only Passat haven’t failed the test on time . Many Passat in good conditions are on the streets today . And i think it s the only one that does not look that old yet .

HDi is better than JTD, sorry PSA group diesel was best of all time, look at history boy
You do know that the HDi is just boughten common rail JTD licence from Fiat, like the Mercedes CDi is, and many others. Do your research first.
But TDi was better engineered and built overall. Just look at how many 1990s TDis are still on the road today... These were revolutionary engines.
