  • Today I shot some video of unboxing my brand new Star Viper XL Inflatable Kayak. I had the pleasure of paddling an Aire Force XL a few years back and since those were discontinued in 2009 and no longer available I searched for an alternative. This boat is virtually identical to the Aire Force XL and I was able to paddle one on the North Santiam and found it to be pretty outstanding - especially considering the cost of about 1/2 the price of a Force by Aire.
The XL is for larger or heavier paddlers with a load capacity of 275 pounds. The boat is 10' 2" so virtually identical to the Aire Lynx I've been using for the last 25 years. For more detailed information or to order one of your own, visit NRS.com

Awesome video! I just got the same boat as a graduation gift and I can’t wait to take it out on the water!

I'm taking mine out on the river on Saturday and Sunday this week to give it a real good try. My intention is to get some video and do more of a performance review so watch the channel for that soon. Enjoy yours!

Great video Sir! We bought the cheaper, uglier kayak from Costco. We had every intention to try it out this season but neither of us had the gumption to try to board it in the PNW waters...😁 Maybe next season. Travel Safe! ❤🙏 OLT

What kind of water are you going to use your boat on? Myself, I prefer class 1-3 water with tight technical rapids and lots of little surfing spots. I may also try it in the ocean.

@@FishTalesusa We are rank newbies... The only boats we've owned have been runabouts... So smooth and warm water, only because I think we'll be spending a lot of time getting wet, not on purpose though 🤣🥸❤ OLT

Thinking of buying one for both whitewater and taking in ocean. Any thoughts on how thoroughly to clean the boat after use, especially in salt water?

I have taken my Aire Lynx in the ocean several times and with that, I had to open up the zippered portions and hose it out, wait for it to dry, then put it all back together. It was a royal pain. With this I'd just hose it off with fresh water, then let it dry before rolling it up. I would probably remove the inflatable floor portion and just make sure there's no sand or debris between the floor panel and the inflatable portion. Other than that, this should be a piece of cake. The biggest problem with ocean use IMHO isn't salt, but the sand and grit which over time can cause issues with valves and could potentially cause abrasion which could lead to failure. It should surf great.

Hi Thanks v much for posting this . I am expecting mine to come in tomorrow or the next day and was wondering if you could expand a little on using this pump that comes along with the boat. Do you start with the larger diameter piston first and then switch to the smaller one at a certain PSI level or what? Am hoping for a wet fall to enjoy the boat before a long winter!!
    Thanks very much.

Yes use the large diameter first then when pumping becomes difficult switch to the thin tube to top off the boat.

Hi again. I saw you in the vid holding the pump hose with 1 hand and using the pump with the other. I found that you can actually screw the non pump end of the hose into the valve tread and free up your hand to pump with both. Just an observation. I would have done the same as you but had seen my friend screw it on his boat last week.

Thanks for the video. How tall are you?

6’4” with longer than normal legs so it’d probably fit easily up to 6’7” or so

@@TanyaBucci the Size of the boat has more to do with Weight Capacity than anything. The Viper (not XL) has a capacity of 200# while the Viper XL has a 275# weight capacity. If you want to carry gear at all or do an overnight trip you still might consider the XL. The Regular viper if you weight around say 160# will perform better than the XL.

@@FishTalesusa thanks for the info! I weigh less than 150 pounds. I typically carry about 10 pounds of gear (compact throw bag, water, snacks, sunscreen, extra layer, straps, etc.). Best!
