- In the final Cornwall video, i take 2 completely different approaches to a sunrise, and a sunset to see if another way of shooting could benefit my photography.

Great photos Nigel. Merry Christmas to you and your family and thank you for all your efforts through the year. It is greatly appreciated.
Merry Christmas, buddy! :)
It's funny how I felt I missed out at Bottalack Mines because I missed the rainbow. I spend too much time taking more photos of the non-hero-shot ;)
I’d say you captured multiple heros! We shoot like this in Iowa, USA because we have very few hero’s to shoot! Thanks for taking us along!
Merry Christmas, Have a great 2023
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to your family and you, Nigel! Excellent vlogs, thank you very much. So inpiring!
Some great images, Nigel, and it's good to see you moving a little more easily. Merry Christmas and all the best for 2023!
Thanks for all the invaluable and honest advice Nigel - you are the absolute best! A very merry Christmas to you & your family and I cannot wait to see what you have for us in 2023
loved the images from the tin mines Nigel. I know it has been a challenging year for you but you still managed to share some great images and produce some fantastic videos. I hope 2023 is another successful year for you
Merry Christmas, Nigel. Your videos are my favorite. Blessings to you and your family this holiday season.
Great video as always - thanks!

Stunning, enjoyed seeing a story through the set of photos. Merry Christmas and thanks for all the great videos 🙂
Merry Christmas, Nigel, and greetings from Germany! I am really enjoying your videos and can't wait to get your calender!
EPIC photos !!!
Thanks Nigel, for your help and inspiration, through the masterclasses and videos you have produced. Merry Christmas and All The Best for the New Year.
Anthony
Another great video Nigel, so so helpful. Thank you for ALL your videos this year, despite your back operation & recovery, you have kept your usual high & very informative output going. Many thanks & a Happy New Year.
Great video & amazing photos. Merry Christmas to you and yours!
Wonderful video Nigel, every time you giggled mentioning its a nudist beach cracked me up. That final image is amazing.
Merry Christmas Nigel. Viewing your latest video on Christmas morning! Thanks for all the videos and hard work you put in throughout the year.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Nigel.
Thanks for a great year in photos. This video reminds me of a wonderful trip to Cornwall some years ago to shoot the mines and sea coast. I’d love to go back.
Merry Christmas, Nigel. Watching your videos is so inspiring.
Gorgeous location!! Very envious
Great Video , an awesome location. Your images are always so good, an thanks for all the great tips! Hope you have a wonderful Christmas
Hi Nigel! I only just "found" your youtube channel earlier this year and I love it! I really enjoy watching your videos each week and have spent quite a lot of time bingeing your old content. Your approach to photography and improving photography has been really inspiring and I've learned so much and can definitely see the improvement in my own photos this year. I have a huge list of UK locations to visit and photograph next time I make the trek from Sydney to the UK. Merry Christmas to you and your family, and Pebbles. All the best for a safe, successful and happy 2023. Thanks.
Cheers! Enjoyed your production and presentation.
Merry Christmas Nigel! Great shots as always. Thanks for sharing your work and knowledge. Trust 2023 will be a better year for you as you continue your recovery. Until next time, keep snapping!
Great Video, Have a wonderful Christmas. Awesome images
Beautiful, Nigel.
Loving the colours in the tin mine shots. Best wishes for Christmas and New Year.
Beautiful images, and Happy Christmas to you and your family!
Thanks for throwing some great ideas into the mix Nigel, this will really help me with my approach to getting shots when I’m out and about.
Merry Christmas, Nigel. I get your point about taking more shots at a certain location, but to be honest, I find your usual approach of patiently looking for that hero shot, as you call it, still quite inspiring!
Liked the surfer tucked in close to the rocks and the gulls on the sand. Most importantly I am so glad that you are making progress from your operations. Happy Christmas and the best of health to you and your family for 2023!
Perfect shot 18:35 ! Merry Christmas, Nigel. All the best for 2023. I am already excited to see new vlogs in 2023.
Fantastic photos , your videos are very interesting and helpful
Gorgeous images!
Have a lovely Christmas!
Merry Christmas and thanks for sharing how you would shoot for a story. I also like that you showed that you could create a blog with the images on Square Space to create your story of the shoot.
Loved the video, Nigel. We are so blessed here in the UK with the sheer variety of landscapes to work with - I haven't been to Cornwall for a while and I feel inspired to get down there now! And thank you for sharing your work and expertise this last year - my own photography has definitely improved as a result. Best wishes for a very happy Christmas!
Beautiful images Nigel! I must visit this location some day.
Merry Christmas!!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Merry Christmas and happy New Year
Hello Nigel thank you for all the hard work that you have put into this year's videos awesome work .
My photography year has been very poor but I have caught up and watched a lot of videos in the last month .Also I have finally printed 1 of my photos and framed it thats down to your enthusiasm that you give us .Iam looking so forward to getting out in 2023 .
All the very best to you and happy new year Nigel .
It doesn’t get better than this Nigel. Amazing. Merry Christmas 🎅
An excellent topic! I personally have never understood this practice, especially popular among English photographers ( youtubers at least): how you guys go to an epic location and later return home with a single (!) picture (not more than 3 anyway). To me it's a lot of missed opportunities. What I've learned from my personal experience, not every shot I consider to be great on a spot results in a keepers basket later. And vice versa - many shots I considered to be just snapshots to get overall understanding of a location (to be analysed later) resulted to be my favourite ones.
thanks for the video and your work you put in it. I've liked the picture of the bay and the one with the patterns on the shore a lot more than the "hero" shot btw....
Seasons greetings to ‘One and All’.
I love the iconic image of the Cornish Botallack (pronounced with a stronger emphasis on the ‘tal’ in the middle of the word BTALik) mine with the house at the edge of the cliffs. Especially with the rainbow you managed to capture perfectly too! I’m loving the Cornish scenery, Nigel. Thank you for sharing these inspirational videos.
This video + the one where you talked about making your own photo book is now something I’m thinking about for 2023. Just need to decide on a project scope 👍👍
Merry Christmas Nigel !!!📷🎅🎄
Nice work and useful advice. Mads is fast becoming the Mad Photo Bomber. Happy Holidays! 🎅🏾🎄🥂
Merry Christmas Nigel. Terrific Location and images.
Always enjoy your videos.
Wolfgang
I shoot a lot of this type of photography late in the day as I have a day job. And often the light is actually the best right at the end. That’s when you get the greatest contrast between the light from the sun and mixing with the ground. I often wait right until the end sometimes walking back to the car in the dark. I’ve seen many photographers who left before the light has played out and they’ve missed the shot. Have a great Christmas I’ve enjoyed your videos all year. I’ve gained a lot of confidence from watching your work. I did my own calendar here in my own home place and that did really well and I’ve been selling lots of prints so my photography has really progressed. Thank you and look forward to seeing more videos in 2023
Merry Christmas Nigel! You nailed it with the one that won the poll, and that was the one that got my vote. It stood out among the others. I know you said it didn’t have the perfect wave but, for me, it was the best wave for this photograph, because it led the eye to the buildings, with a nice diagonal and kept the focus on the subject - the beautifully lit buildings. And the wave helped maintain the sense of the three dimensional. Had it been more of a crashing wave in the same spot, it would have been competing with the subject for attention. But that’s just my view. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Just getting ready to start cooking, so I shall watch this later 😀. Hope you and your family have a fantastic Xmas and that 2023 brings all you wish for! Thanks for sharing your work with us this year Nigel, it’s been wonderful 👏👍😀
Your photos are always so inspiring to me. I love the idea of getting a collection of images alongside your “hero” shot. It definitely tells a stronger story in my opinion.
As always Nigel, very enjoyable. Have a great Christmas.
Merry Christmas Nigel wow the tin mines shots are brilliant 👏
Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas to you and everyone else
Interesting, thank you
Love the photos at that beach. Wondering when shooting right towards sun behind rocks, is it best to treat them like a silhouette
Great photos and an interesting thought starter regarding magazines.
Wonderful shots and you are so right to have some supporting shots to share with the "Money Shot" per se and to leave enough negative space if you are submitting to a magazine. I hope you had a Merry Xmas and enjoy the upcoming New Year and thanks for sharing your work in 2022 it was excellent and very enjoyable. - Jeff
Great photos! From your first location, I actually like the shots down into the bay the most. Your photos of the tin mines are great as well. There I also like the composition shooting through the rocks very much, although the light wasn't as impressive as of the shots before.
Good morning Nigel
Just wanted to thank you for all your tutorials. You brought me back into shooting photos again.
I wanted wish for you and your family to have a wonderful and marvelous Christmas.
Take Care and God Bless.🌟🙏
Admire your commitment for our video early🙏
All the very very best to you , your family & friends! Hopefully we may bump into you out there in the New Year? 🎊 🎉🫶
Love the photos, Botallack is one of my favourite places. The lower engine house housed a beam engine pump the upper was a whim or winder for the Boscowen diagonal shaft. Merry Christmas. God bless
Happy Holidays to you!
That is a a really beautiful location. I live on the north east coast of England and it's tempting to think we have the best coastline in the country up here, but seeing these videos from Cornwall makes me question that.
Thanks Nigel, it's boxing day and I've got some 'down time' ie time away from the home kitchen! Really impressive photo's, as usual, I know this area well and it's inspired me to return and improve on my existing images. Thanks for everything this year, not the best for you personally maybe, but you're be stronger next year I'm sure, all the best to you and the family, I' expect Pebbles has had the odd treat too !
Merry Christmas Nigel I’ve learned so much from your videos and look forward to new ones every Sunday. I hope your back problems are a lot better Nigel. I know from personal experience how commanding they can be. Take care and keep the videos rolling. Jim Black 🥃🥃 from 🏴🏴
P.S. your Calendar looks wonderful and full of fantastic images.
When you go to Perranzabulo and find the Retallick Mine, I will be very excited.
Nice work, Nigel. At 5:00 you point to the rock lines as part of your composition. To me it felt like the layers of seawater rolling over each other towards shore were actually more important in that fra,me.
Watching your videos is so inspiring Nigel! Thanks so much for all you do. Some of them look very challenging to shoot. Too bad about your mic muff. 😒. Merry Christmas. I'm hoping your back is feeling much better. Cheers!
Merry Christmas Nigel!
Merry and Peaceful Christmas Nigel. - Can't wait to see what was on your Christmas Pressie List... :) !
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year bro 🎉
I think some of those would look great as mono conversions too Nigel
Nigel I have watched your videos and Mads' videos for years, and obviously you and he have very different methods of finding/composing/shooting photos in the field. I never cease to be amazed at how Mads can go out into the Danish countryside and come away with so many great photos in a single trip. I don't want to say he employs a "spray and pray" type philosophy, but clearly he takes more photos of more different compositions that you typically do. You're much more considered and calculating in the way you approach your compositions, having an apple and observing the location.......but I have to tell you....I really really like a lot of these photos you took at Logan Rock that you "normally" wouldn't have taken. I think you should do more of this!
Merry Christmas Nigel. A long overdue thanks for all of your great instructional and inspiring videos. They've helped to bring my (beginning) photography to a new level. Cheers.
What a great video to enjoy over my morning coffee! Always appreciate you taking us there.
Really basic question regarding how you approach exposure when shooting straight into the Sun. Do you expose for highlights and pull shadows? How often, if ever, do you take and combine multiple exposures to get the needed dynamic range?
Wow, at Christmas eve!
Dear Nigel, merry Christmas! 🌲
And thank you for all! Your work is our luck … ok, and your’s as well. 😉
Regards. Carsten Diefert
Merry Christmas and happy New year Nigel.
It seems a bit like describing a panel of images without saying the word panel 😜
Great images as always, excellent video
awesome
Beautiful photos Nigel, got to love Nikon colors, great edits !!
Thanks for sharing your insights and happy holidays to all. Although many go to great pains to create them, the most compelling images aren't necessarily the "hero" ones (which are often more "cliché" than artistically significant). Nice image @ 7:08 (and Mads' shots--I generally shoot more "details" rather than large scenes). I also started a comment around the 2:30 mark thinking "missed opportunities," but then at 10:26, you showed an image close to what I would've done (and no birds necessary to make that work). I actually like the "bad" lighting at 17:31, as it adds to the foreboding nature of the wild seas and craggy coast (B&W could accentuate that, at the risk of being cliché‚ of course). Nice shots, it's just that there are of course other ways to go.
Nigel, I went down to the mines a few years ago and a local bird photographer told us to go behind the mines. We did and took a nice and different photo . We went back when the restriction from covid to have another go. It was more stormy but the access was cut off due to a landslide. No sure its been made safe or gone for good. I put the photo on the masterclass face book page in January 2021
When shooting at Logan Rock, you should have titled the video "Bare Necessities" - que music... 🎶 if you're shooting at a such a beach. Any Merry Christmas to you and your family 🎄🎅
Hi Nigel, great video and stunning images as always. A couple of your shots have extremely bright areas, do you accept the odd bit of burnout or do you always ensure you are not quite overexposing? Interested to know how you handle this when you can’t HDR two or three exposures due to movement in the scene ?
great photos and nice story. Need to get some synonyms for 'epic' for you though hehehe
Lovely shots - like to see Mads in them too. My favourite was the photos of the textures in the sand (without Mads - sorry!).
I would love to see how you managed to process the raw image of Botallack to that shown in the video
Welcome to Cornwall.
Logan rock (the name of the beach is Pednvounder [sometimes spelt Pedn Vounder] ) - I think the nudist tag is more a bit of folklore; its actually quite a difficult beach to access. Have seen Seals on the beach a couple of times.
Sand patterns at 7:12 really nice!
Beautiful light at Botallack - been trying to get that combination of strong evening light, dark clouds over the engine houses and rough seas for many, many years!
Believe it or not we say a guy they 🙈
This was a very interesting trip down to the water. It looked a bit scary but I assume you didn't put yourself (and your back) in danger. I'm wondering if you use the new LR options to change the sky lighting. Some of the shots had a sky (both sunrise and sunset) that could have been darkened a bit (a least I thought darkening would have helped) and I wondered how you make that decision.
Double rainbow, all the way across!
