- In this video I take a look at a new offering from Manfrotto, the Element MII Video Monopod Aluminium Kit with Fluid Head. This very compact, very light monopod is a great solution for being able to get smooth video and stable photos without having to deal with a lot of bulk and weight.

I love this monopod. Lightweight and just perfect. It’s the perfect size that you want to take it everywhere
I agree. This one really hits a sweet spot of functionality and size/weight. Thanks for watching!
@@MattSpaugh I’ve had this monopod for a few months but haven’t had the courage to see if the fluid pan base unscrews from the monopod pole. Have you tried?
@@Alogicchannel to answer your question, no. I'm curious why you would want to?
@@MattSpaugh I’m in the market for a new hiking pole and figured I might as well use this if I can.
Haven’t been brave enough to mess with the fluid pan base yet to see if it come off.
@@Alogicchannel I just spent four days with mine in Charleston and Folly Island. Worked like a champ at clearing brush, warding off unwanted dog attention, and as a walking support on the dunes!
I'm going to have to disassemble the base to get all the sand out as I used it in the ocean a number of times.
If I completely disassemble it, I may do a follow up video.
Matt, Bruce three houses down. I have been looking for a good lightweight mono pod and I think this might be it. I have a lot of camera work coming up at Blade next month and a tripod is just not really practical there. I think I will give this a try. I especially like the sliding base.
Ha - that's cool. You're welcome to borrow this one to try it out. It's very solid. I've got a soccer camp shoot coming up that I'll need it for but you should definitely try mine. I think you'll like it.
@@MattSpaugh Thanks I will grab it around the end of the month Blade is always the first weekend in June.
Good review! Thank you!
It was a fun one, I so wish I'd had the monopod with me for that wander through the park. I had so many unusable shots that would've been saved if I'd just had some camera support with me.
Thanks for watching!
It might be possible to remove the head and the fluid base and with a conversion nut and thread combo that may (or may not) be attached to the side of the head, mount the head onto the base and then have a mini-fluid head tripod that could be used for low angle shots or placed on a table or suitable flat support area.
The head is removable but the base that's it sits on is pretty small. The base is not removable per se... I've disassembled mine a few times to get the salt water and rodeo dust out but it's not something you could repurpose without doing major modifications.
Thanks for chiming in - and for watching!
@@MattSpaugh On some models they do remove the head and base to make a mini-tripod. This might be of interest to you.

6:30 helpful tip!
It makes a huge difference. Once I got into that habit with all of my cameras/heads, I saw a real improvement in the smoothness of my work.
Thanks for watching!
Hi Matt, I'd like to just curious are you able to disassemble the monopod so that you can put in a rucksack such as the nat geo medium
You can remove the head, and the legs fold upward toward the body, but it does not break down any further than that.
Hope that helps, thanks for watching.
@@MattSpaugh thank you, these are the bag's dimensions 28 x 11 x 43 cm, do you think folded it would fit?
@@Nobody76World 43cm is about 17". The folded length of the monopod is just over 24" - closer to 60cm so no, it would not fit.
Slider support 💯👌
As my only slider is the iFootage Shark Nano, I've never needed any additional support, but for something longer, I could definitely see this working well. Thanks for the tip and thanks for watching!
@MattSpaugh - I have a lightweight portable 4ft slider and I use two Manfrotto MII's at each end for support and works like charm. 💯👌 I could totally see how you wouldn't need it on a smaller slider. But once it gets to be 4ft, it gets quite quirky at each end.
@@alanguzman992 I used to us a 41" slider and it definitely needed support on each end - even with just a camera and 85mm lens it would be an issue. Have a good one!
@MattSpaugh - Exactly. 💯👏🤣 It's my run and gun setup that I use for small shoots. Even with a FX3 and 24-70mm lens. Those Manfrotto's work perfectly. Wish they could be a tad bit longer, though. Yah know? I use apple boxes if I need to raise the height.
@@alanguzman992 I'll have to give that a try! Thx.
Great review. Do you think the monopod is tall enough? Just wondering should I go with 4 sections or 5 sections model.
Only once or twice did I feel like it was coming up short and in those instances I was able to put it on something to get the height I needed - those fenceposts came in handy at the horse farm!
Hope that helps, thanks for watching!
@@MattSpaugh thank you for such a prompt response. Sure it helps. You have great channel with hq videos. All the best! 📷🎥👌
@@DamirSpanic Thanks Damir!
@@MattSpaugh I ran to the store and got me one today. Really great. 👍
@@DamirSpanic Congrats - I'm sure you'll dig it.
The tripod baseplate, is it a normal size or smaller?
It's the standard width, but it's only about 3-4 inches long.
Hope that helps, thanks for watching!
Hello Matt,
Thank you.
Could you put another heavier head on it? Like the MHXPRO-2W head from manfrotto?
Thank's
It would certainly fit but you're going to end up with a very top-heavy set up that, for my style of shooting, just would not work. One thing to keep in mind is the fluid base... you don't really need to have a head with pan dampening so the MHXPRO-2W would kinda be overkill IMHO.
If you end up trying it, let me know how it works out. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching.
Thank you very much Matt. You're probably right, I'll try with a lighter head.
MII - Made In Italy ?
I'd guess that's it - I can't believe I didn't put that together... hope y'all are well! Thanks for watching.
