Good repair, Simon. Nice tip on searching the IF to help localize the defective stage. Yes, those germaniums can be pesky, especially in local oscillator stages. Cheers!
Those germanium transistors are a pain., I tap them with the handle of a small screwdriver and my radio will usually come back to life ..... 😊 My father used to make germanium transistors during his apprenticeship at GEC, they would have large oil drums on the production line to put the bad ones in Lovely little radios .
Reception on LW can be doubled by tuning to 252 kHz. The station was originally called Atlantic 252. Today it comes under the umbrella of RTE - Ireland's national broadcaster.. It tranmissions are, for the most part those of RTE1 with some variation for its target audience which is the Irish diaspora in Britain. An internet search reveals an interesting history and the struggle to prevent its closure.
Nice score Simon. It is always nice to find little treaures locally. That was a good troubleshoot. My guess is the "R" in the Roberts emblem is a tad short on the top. Thanks for sharing Simon.
Lovely Old Set The R200 I Have About 4 or 5 Of Them Never Used GT322Bs in Any Of Them Kept Them For My Hackers Have Always Zapped The AFxx With About 63v And They Are All Still Working in The Sets I Have Done, Replaced The All Ways Bad Plessys But Never Stuffed Them (lifes too short) Might Have One Or Two Spare Brights Or Compleat Knobs Would Have To Check My Spares Simon Regards mike.
Nice work Simon. It certainly gave you the run around. I have found that the GT322b doesn’t work in the oscillator position before. Frequency is probably just that little bit too low on LW. Works in the IF section though which isn’t a million miles away. I tend to buy brights in for restorations and sent a link to you. The top part of the ‘R’ is missing though. Great video. Cheers Graham
Really good video on the r200,glad it's all working now.got one in green but the handle didn't survive so has a replacement but looks good.keep up the great work
Hi Simon, they actually date from the early 60 s, my parents had one long before we had tv, I was given one in almost mint condition by my neighbour had original purchase documents from 1963, the badge is defiantly missing a bit, thanks
I’m wondering if a gentle roll with a rolling pin for the grill? It will offer an even press? Just an idea. What do you use to clean the dial board? Thanks
Simon, I've got a bright for you, in fact a defunct R200 chassis happy to send it for all your great tuition. Also, your little slip about your bino collection at the start of the video and I suddenly twigged that you are Simon's Bino page on Flickr, another great resource that I've used in the past. Mail me your address and I'll post it on.
Replacing all electrolytics was generally referred to as "Shot-gunning back then. It's reasonably effective, yet labor & intellect intensive as the capacitor count goes up log scale. Don't put them in backwards during a momentary lack of reason...... he says confidently.
Very nice repair! You said that the trimmer capacitor has a mylar insulator, did you mean mica or is it really mylar? I know mica trimmers are easily damaged by over-tightening the adjusting screw.
Smashing repair simon :-D That was a mess, the damage was done mostly by a person/people that didn't have a clue, or a working brain lol. Why on earth did they screw down the toaster rack trimmers, stupid people :-(. I've had c.b radios in a similar state, i.f/t.x/Vco stages have smashied ferrite cores and sometimes they screwed the core down so hard that they smashed the rod capacitor in the bottom of the transformer :-( No fun fixing them. A metal ball and bench vice, plus an old 2 pence and you can make a quality dome, my silly thoughts :-D
hello, i've got the exact same radio as this, just a different serial number. I live in Bath and wondered if you know anyone who really knows their stuff who could fix it for me. It mostly works, but very crackly and unreliable. Thanks.
thanks simon you have now given me a clue as to why an R500 i have will recive nothing on long wave it too has a gt 322 replacement for af117 .

Cheers mate. We have a good support network since you started these live streams.

Great stuff
Best regards Shaun

Superb video simon.
Really good video and nice work Simon.
Nice looking radio. Keep up the good work
Lovely little set Simon. Can I suggest a lino roller for the grill, I got a little 4" one from Amazon, works well.
Cheers Andy.
Just use a Cadburys milk chocolate button for the missing knob decoration, thank me later.😄

That's great to know, thanks.
Most interesting video, Simon, oscillator running too slow for that GT transistor that's a handy bit of info that...

That would be great Mark Thank you.

Yep done that a few times!
Simon - did you find out where to get the knob brights from? I need a couple myself so it would be handy...thanks
Hi Spanky. Bought a scrap radio in the end. Tried to make them but could not dish them without distortion.

Hi Simon, do you take on repair work on these?
I do but have a search for Radiocruncher. He's the best chap to deal with.

Search for user Radiocruncher. He's on UA-cam and lives in Devon. He's you man
!
@@SoddingaboutSi many thanks.
