Awesome simplicity on these. I have a 77 f250 with a 400 motor. It's junk. Probably will swap in a 300 and a manual. We had a 69 econoline with the 300 when I was a kid. It ran and ran and ran and sold it running but the clutch went out.

Im a professional mechanic, i daily drive a 73 250 with a 68 300 with an unknown amount of miles. These engines are the greatest gasoline engines ever put into production as far as versatility, cost, and usable power Being designed and built in the 70s these are all i do to them GM HEI distributor China carb 1 wire alt Mechanical linkage for carb heat
I'm not a professional mechanic just as a side hustle. But I do the exact same thing. I've done it to a few trucks that the wiring has deteriorated on. Many of these trucks are 50 plus years old and this freshens them right up.
Those 300 sixes were very good engines along with the 240 sixes. They look identical. The 240 6 cylinders were more common in the late 1960's until the mid 1970's
Alright. Your video saved me a lot reassembling the head gasket, all that. I got the truck running now... But cant for the life of me figure out where to put the spring for the throttle cable... Ive got it where i can rev it but it doesnt really go back into place snd i have a long pulley style spring... And clue what im talkin about here.? 1970 f100, 300 i6...
Amazing video, I’ve just picked up a 1979 f150 straight 6 in the uk. New to working on vehicles but in the trades so good with my hands. Looking forward to learning. One of the jobs I wanted to do was change the air filter but realised I’d need a new carb and intake manifold, looking at yours it looks like it fits the standard carb. What is the one you’re running? Thanks!
Great video! I was wondering where is the throttle body on this engine? Looking to clean it a bit hopefully stop some bogging and hesitation when first starting truck and stepping on gas
Awesome video thank you. I have an 86 manual that’s tough to get into gear, especially 1st. Any tips to smoothing that out? Also a clunk when turning wheel left/right, and on accelerating/stop. Thanks!
Well you got another new subscriber with this one here. Thanks for the upload. Great walk-through of the i6. Is a coil a name for ignition transformer?
Hello, I recently purchased a 78 f100 with the same engine and as a novice in mechanics I really appreciate this video. My truck didn’t come with the pcv valve. I recently purchased it but have no idea how to install it nor do I know where the hose would connect to
Should have a hose that goes to either carburetor or right under the carb. The PCV valve goes right on top of the valve cover. Unless your truck has a solid valve cover
i have had this engine in vans some one told me the reason why these gear to gear motors are bad is cuz they turn backwards if they ever back fire too much and then jump a tooth and demolish the engine see if that makes any sense to you cuz it doesn't make any sense to me but still one of my engines did get stuck not turn my thoughts are that the oil pump went but the guy who told me is a much better mechanic than me
I'm not a big fan of the "cold air intakes" but in this case you'd be slightly better off with it because your paper filter over your manifold allows heat to heat your incoming air for the intake and that's..for every 10 degrees hotter you lose 1% efficiency power and mileage. Since you have a wet manifold it helps compensate. The fuel will cool the air to some degree. Might not be worth your trouble or expense IDK. Like I said I don't normally like cold air intakes because the factory box up near the bumper is actually the coolest and best place for the filter to start with but you know the salesmen with the twisted marketing hype makes it sound like 20 more HP and 4 more mpg LoL. But on carbureted engines this is where a cold intake filter up near the bumper and even an insulated hose might make some kind of difference.
Is a 300 6i head from a 87 6i. Better than a head from an 81? The head from the 87 seems to have heart shape combustion chamber. Great vid. On 300 6. I have one on my 69 f-100. Smooth and very torquiy. Thank you and God bless.
Great little rundown here buddy appreciate it. Grandpa was a Ford guy, unfortunately he never kept his old trucks. I remember he had one of these 300 6's. What you getting on the gas mileage for this guy, city vs hwy? Super curious. Also, is that a 1 barrel or a 2? Many thanks
You seem really knowledgeable about the 300ci. I have a 1973 f250. All original I believe. Got a couple questions if you can answer them it’d be great. First question is adding power steering? Can I and what would I need to do it? Second is I recently had the carb rebuilt professionally done. I bolted it on and I love it. But I have no idea how to adjust it. It’s running great but rich. Noticeably rich. I realize it’s just an adjustment. Lol But give me an idea or a link on how? If it exists. 😊
Just swapped this carb onto my 84 ranger, runs WAY better than the feedback style I had before. Still needs adjustment for the choke and whatnot and I’ll probably rebuild it in the winter. Any good links to adjust the carb properly?
Take the carb off. Look at the throttle blade and the transfer slot. Make sure the blade is adjusted to a square and not a rectangle. Itll help so much with power delivery
Love the vid. I have a 1978 Ford F100. I can’t find the original Temp sensor. Can you tell me where it would be? Also can you tell me how you installed the aftermarket temp sensor? Finally, I can remover the key from the locked position. I moved the wheel and that did not work. The power also stays on which Might be connected? How do air resolve all? Thanks so much!!
@@Quint1836 that’s for responding. I found it since posting. It was under intake manifold, left side facing engine. Another ignorant question. I have the 90 degree plug that ends with just a wire. Where does it go to? A lot of connections have been cut for some reason and I am new to this! Thanks again
Thank you for this video. I drive an 83 F150 my late dad bought new in 83. Still runs fairly well, but rusting here in Wis. I think my brothers took the EGR valve off long ago, but it still runs ok. Is the EGR very important? Thanks again. Gary
The EGR is Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve. Just BS government emission control. As long as you dont have a massive vaccum leak, you're good to go. Itll run better anyways. Mine has been deleted
I just bought a 1981 and I know I might be wayyy late but by chance do you have a belt diagram? I’m trying to replace the belt to the power steering and google is no luck
Where did u find that air cleaner and air filter I couldn’t find anything for a single barrel carburetor for my truck and I think it would add a touch to mine
Hello- Could O ask where you got distributor- Is it ford distributor or after market? I have an '85 300 w/ feed back carb & all the emissions wires all over the place looking to just get it back like yours to simpler operation- Thanks, jack
Ive seen some people put a cam in these engines which makes them sound great, would you recommend it? Im looking to import a 76 f100 with an I6 300 to the uk and was just considering which mods would improve power, mpg and reliability. Any advice would be great!
I have an 82 f150 with the 300. I need help doing some carb work. I bought a new carb for it. With the intention of rebuilding the old and having a spare. The old carb has some parts on it that the new one doesn't. Can you go in depth on the carburetor and everything attached. I believe the new one is lacking an anti stall dashpot. There are also some wiring loom connections that are absent on the new carb. Can anyone help or point me in the right direction. Thank you.
I have a 1988 f150, 4.3 5 speed, 4X4 manual. Its EFI, How do you remove all the computer crap to run and look like yours ? I love the carb and point system ! You made the engine bay simple and clean, nice job !! What carb do you run ?
I have the exact engine. Been running rougher and rougher and now won't start without the pedal floored and even then runs very slow and rough with 0 power. New fuel filter and pump. Since points were replaced with electronic..... I'm thinking either spark issue or timing, but need a helper to watch spark light while turning key. Perhaps you can suggest something else I can try? thanks
I had one of these in a 93 f150 that had efi of course and I sold it a few years ago. I missed it so I just picked up a 77 f100 with the carbed version and I must say it sounds a lot meaner. I wonder if its just the different fuel delivery that causes that mean sound or is there some other difference between the efi and carbed version? They both were/are straight piped as far as the exhaust so it can't be that...
I just got a 84 f150, guy said it’s been sitting about 2 years. I can’t get it to turn over. What do you recommend to do to free it up. Some tell me, Marvel mystery oil, some Say use kerosene. My first inline 6. Any tips would be greatly appreciated thanks.
ATF down the cylinders let it soak for 2 days then use a breaker bar and try to work it back and fourth. Also, take all the belts off, make sure a pulley isnt seized. Typically they dont lock up in 2 years. So hopefully you dont have a bad motor
Just bought a 1980, mine has a crankcase cover right on top of the valve cover behind where you put the oil. Is that supposed to be ran to something else? It wasn’t connected via a tube or anything so I really am not sure.
What engine mounts are you using? I have a 74 supercab. I plan on doing a 300 swap. Just wondering if the engine mounts will bolt on or if I have to weld them.
I’m assuming you’ve got no computer modules in this? If not, how’d you wire the o2 sensor? I’m new to this trying to rewire my 85 but I don’t want to use the ecu
i got a 1982 ford f150 with the 300 in it and im still trying to get it running but the carb is all gummed up and i cant find no videos on how to take the factory 1 barrel carb off can you make a vidoe about it i would appreciate it and nice engine vary clean goodjob👍

Hello I could really use info on my, " great white, ". Owned it over 20 years bought it for my mobile dog grooming. I want to convert to personal RV. My business was great for short time. my back broke in 200 3. Lifelong. Training horses caused concurring trauma to my spine. It broke and my biz came to a screeching halt. My AKA grummy bear, is 1978 Ford Grumman- Olson Hostess Bread delivery truck Step Van. 41,000 MI on a 300 straight 6 Ford with carb. Manual choke, four-speed. D u a l l y. Has original shallow round air cleaner- carburetor cover. Didn't have any problems with it years ago grooming. But forgot about a wire that was holding an odd angled, three or four inch metal arm that connects to choke spring mechanism and goes down through hole in a small flat plate. But no clip or Cotter to hold that end in the hole of plate. It's all part of choke and gas and adjustment screws and that's what I'm stuck trying to do. That sounds confusing because I sure am. Yep. And I've wanted a service manual for truck but no luck even finding book for engine. At least not me. I know they're out there somewhere with companies who specialize in vintage. But haven't found it yet. I'm old-fashioned and although mechanically capable..lots to learn.. I have pics of identification numbers info, also rim and tire info to share with whoever might want to help. I've tried looking up diagrams. Very detailed hard to understand for actual Hands-On repair. I've watched videos a couple have been helpful but not on the subject I'm on or the exact year of the setup in this truck. Not even sure if that matters 100% or not. One thing's for sure I'm definitely learning all the time. I believe you never stop learning:-)
I have a 78 Econoline Club Wagon Custom with a 300 and 4 speed manual transmission but it doesn't want to accelerate any ideas what could cause this thanks
I have the same truck what causes the truck having trouble shifting. It grinds on reverse very hard to shift to 1. Shifting to 2 and 3 are easier but still hard. Is there no transmission fluid?
That’s just what happens. No synchro in R and 1st. When you shift those gears, you have to depress the clutch and wait about 3 seconds, then shift and the vehicle has to be completely stopped
Just purchased a inline 6 and it's missing the hard fuel line that screws into the mechanical fuel pump on the motor and runs up to the carburetor I can't find that peice of hard line or even an adaptor to use nylon I've had no luck tried multiple autoparts stores and hardware stores if you know where I can buy a new one that would be amazing lol
You won’t be able to find that, just go get some universal fuel fittings and put one in the pump, then run rubber line to the carb and get a fuel filter for the carb that can take a rubber line part number - FF2202DL
I used a dorman 5/16 steel brake/fuel line and it had the correct bolt thread for the fuel pump so it went in no problem fired my inline 6 for the first time since it was parked by the previous owner in 08 today thanks alot!
Hey, I got a hole in my pocket at the moment and I want to do a engine swap on my 1976 Ford F-350 and I’m looking to put the 300 i6 in it, I’m just curious, do these motors get better gas mileage?
They get about the same maybe a tad better than a 302. But the torque is the same as a 351C. 300 I6 is the best engine ever built. Get it through Autozone. 4 year unlimited mile warranty Nutech remanufactured motor
Let's go Brandon on the gas prices! 300 6 will get 13-15 mpg and stump pulling torque! I drove my '74 F-250 Ranger SuperCab 4.9 all through high school and it is still so reliable and pretty economical.
Could you possibly show how all the vacuum lines are routed that’s the current problem I’m having the previous owner had remove almost all the vacuum lines and plugged them off and I’m looking to put everything back to stock

Thanks this was actually very help full very appreciated

Great video , I have a question, so I’m trying to find the Adapter where you have the Temp sensor, I’m able to find the Temp sensor no problem but not the adapter that it’s attached to the thermostat housing, it’s very hard to find any ideas, I have a 1980 Ford F100 custom 6 cylinder in Line 4.9L
I got the adapter from the plumbing section at home depot. Take the temp sensor there to match the threads. Hope this helps
That engine bay is clean - good work Broski!
Thanks man! Thinking of painting it.
Thinking all black, or blue that matches the engine. Thoughts?

Awesome simplicity on these. I have a 77 f250 with a 400 motor. It's junk. Probably will swap in a 300 and a manual. We had a 69 econoline with the 300 when I was a kid. It ran and ran and ran and sold it running but the clutch went out.
I just picked up a 84 4wd 300 in-line 6 granny 4 speed flatbed on 33s with 70,000 original miles, has a had time starting I’m thinking on just changing the carburetor completely and changing the distributor and plugs and wires and see what happens from there, gave 800 dollars for this truck in western North Carolina
Im a professional mechanic, i daily drive a 73 250 with a 68 300 with an unknown amount of miles.
These engines are the greatest gasoline engines ever put into production as far as versatility, cost, and usable power
Being designed and built in the 70s these are all i do to them
GM HEI distributor
China carb
1 wire alt
Mechanical linkage for carb heat
I'm not a professional mechanic just as a side hustle. But I do the exact same thing. I've done it to a few trucks that the wiring has deteriorated on. Many of these trucks are 50 plus years old and this freshens them right up.
Those 300 sixes were very good engines along with the 240 sixes. They look identical. The 240 6 cylinders were more common in the late 1960's until the mid 1970's
Awesome walk through Brotha!!
Thanks brotha
Well, my truck has a spring built in to the cable. It doesnt really matter where it goes so long as it works
@@Quint1836 interesting. Mine is a weird and janky design. Most people have the spring built in so I'm really confused lol.

Thanks!
Air filter # 4806
Great video! I was wondering where is the throttle body on this engine? Looking to clean it a bit hopefully stop some bogging and hesitation when first starting truck and stepping on gas
No throttle body on this one. It’s got a carburetor
I see does this have a C4 tranny?
Awesome video thank you. I have an 86 manual that’s tough to get into gear, especially 1st. Any tips to smoothing that out? Also a clunk when turning wheel left/right, and on accelerating/stop. Thanks!
Your clutch is worn out. Try adjusting it if it can be adjusted. So far as the clunk your suspension is worn out. Tie rods and ball joints
Unless your truck has a solid valve cover
i have had this engine in vans some one told me the reason why these gear to gear motors are bad is cuz they turn backwards if they ever back fire too much and then jump a tooth and demolish the engine see if that makes any sense to you cuz it doesn't make any sense to me but still one of my engines did get stuck not turn my thoughts are that the oil pump went but the guy who told me is a much better mechanic than me
I’ve never heard of that… 300s are great motors and are known for their longevity
Where get the air cleaner? I can't find any aftermarket ones that fit.

153624 piston firing in the ford 4.9 straight six cylinder.
great video, thanks
Do they still have tank pumps were they have the pump running off the motor
You have one or the other
I'm not a big fan of the "cold air intakes" but in this case you'd be slightly better off with it because your paper filter over your manifold allows heat to heat your incoming air for the intake and that's..for every 10 degrees hotter you lose 1% efficiency power and mileage.
Thank you my brother
Is a 300 6i head from a 87 6i. Better than a head from an 81? The head from the 87 seems to have heart shape combustion chamber. Great vid. On 300 6. I have one on my 69 f-100. Smooth and very torquiy. Thank you and God bless.
87 has boosted compression for efi
Lol
But give me an idea or a link on how?
If it exists.
😊
I love the truck. Lol
Never gonna get rid of it.
What brand is that carb ? Where can a person get one ?
Ebay special. Dont get the ones that are $70. They are junk. Go for the ones that are $90. They work amazing
Thanks
Great video
With what piece did you use to split for the after market water temp sensor?
Just some home depot brass fittings.
I have a 82 f250 straight 6 with a 2150 on it. How does the single barrel handle? I think the 2 barrel might be a bit much.
Works great
Is there anyway you could do a video about the wiring? It’d help me out a ton
@@Quint1836 sounds good, I’ll give that a shot. Hopefully I’ll remember to report back when I get around to it 😆

It's where my aftermarket one is. Just match the threads and put thread sealant. Not too sure about the key. Might need a new ignition cylinder
@@Quint1836 that’s for responding. I found it since posting. It was under intake manifold, left side facing engine. Another ignorant question. I have the 90 degree plug that ends with just a wire.

Hello- Could O ask where you got distributor- Is it ford distributor or after market? I have an '85 300 w/ feed back carb & all the emissions wires all over the place looking to just get it back like yours to simpler operation- Thanks, jack
This is a Cardone remanufactured distributor for a 1972 ford 4.9 that is a points style that I put pertronix in. I would recommend you do this set uo
Hope that helps jack. Please reach out with any questions
Ive seen some people put a cam in these engines which makes them sound great, would you recommend it? Im looking to import a 76 f100 with an I6 300 to the uk and was just considering which mods would improve power, mpg and reliability. Any advice would be great!
Bone stock is so reliable. But you can easily get these things to 300+ horsepower by cam, 4 barrel intake and carb, headers and HEI ignition
Thank you.
Sounds like you have a smog carburetor with tps and emission control. If the truck runs ok without that stuff then leave it be
I have a 1988 f150, 4.3 5 speed, 4X4 manual.

Perhaps you can suggest something else I can try? thanks
New carburetor from ebay will fix that problem
I had one of these in a 93 f150 that had efi of course and I sold it a few years ago. I missed it so I just picked up a 77 f100 with the carbed version and I must say it sounds a lot meaner. I wonder if its just the different fuel delivery that causes that mean sound or is there some other difference between the efi and carbed version? They both were/are straight piped as far as the exhaust so it can't be that...
I use marvel m oil. On my 1981 f 150..stp is good to.great vidio. 4.9 litre.
Can you make a video of the vacuum lines where the go
What engine mounts are you using? I have a 74 supercab. I plan on doing a 300 swap. Just wondering if the engine mounts will bolt on or if I have to weld them.
Probably have to weld. Engine mount will bolt up but the brackets to the subframe will likely have to be welded
Can you go over where your vacuum is hooked up from your power breaks to the source?
Manifold vacuum
I’m assuming you’ve got no computer modules in this? If not, how’d you wire the o2 sensor? I’m new to this trying to rewire my 85 but I don’t want to use the ecu

You also might change the trans fluid and check your shift bushings are good
Just purchased a inline 6 and it's missing the hard fuel line that screws into the mechanical fuel pump on the motor and runs up to the carburetor I can't find that peice of hard line or even an adaptor to use nylon I've had no luck tried multiple autoparts stores and hardware stores if you know where I can buy a new one that would be amazing lol
You won’t be able to find that, just go get some universal fuel fittings and put one in the pump, then run rubber line to the carb and get a fuel filter for the carb that can take a rubber line part number - FF2202DL
Hope this helps
Thank you I'll definitely try that
