I use air dry paints, I've been using the luminaire air dry paints, but they don't really like to stick to bountiful baby sculpts..Even with the vinyl prep. They work fine on the Macphearsons vinyls tho. I'm thinking of switching to other kinds...my babies are fading a bit from all the videos I've made with them under the sun in my garden....and they are only a few months old. Because I've had cancer, I'm pretty sure that I won't ever use heat set paints...tho some are just gorgeous, in your vid here, I'd prefer that air dry doll over Indies paint, tho yes she too is beautiful, she just doesn't seem to have the depth the other doll has. I sure hope I didn't offend you in any way, I am an opinionated little cus sometimes, lol! Hugs, and thanks for all the info! ❤️🐝
Oh, not at all! I really appreciate hearing your opinion and totally not offended at all. I don't think I will use GHSP either due to the health risks ... I think it's ok if you have a separate oven and a separate work space outside the house, but our house is pretty small so we don't have that luxury. I think the quality of the baby is definitely dependent on the artist doing it. It will be interesting to see how my air dry babies hold up over time also but so far, so good. I have been using Che'Air paints and they don't seem to have issues sticking to the vinyl. It's interesting that there are so many options out there for sure. xoxo
Barbara I love the MacPhearsons Vinyl kits and Reborns they are so soft and cuddley. I have two Reborns from that company and I know they are not the high end sculpts but they are very nice for us newbies. I use the painted parts to construct some nice dolls.
Thank you for sharing your perspective. I love the baby on the right painted by Melissa George. The shading on the eyes is particularly realistic and beautiful.
Can you do a video tutorial on how to paint with acrylic paint ? Because I want to reborn a doll with air dry paint , but don't really know what to do .
Actually acrylic paint was used for reborns way before genesis...... back in the last 90s when reborns first came out and were all over ebay (me and my mom made them, my mom sewed bodys before b.b was even popular or around) back when reborn beregnguers were all the rage, people used acrylic they just dosnt prep or seal properly..
It's a good question. I don't know actually how it affects the skin tone since I haven't seen what the baby looks like before the matte varnish, but I can definitely tell by touch which babies have had it and which haven't. It does seem to add some durability to those babies, but the texture is a little rougher if that makes sense.
i really liked the video! i use acrylic paint sense i started so im used to them and i never really liked the way you had to put genesis in the oven i was afired the baby getting burnt or melted but i haven't had any problem with the acrylic paints, i have tried the luminaire air dry paints but i didn't like them so much ( but i know alot of people can make beautiful dolls with that paint if you can go you!) but yeah i love this video so much and i love this community so much! may god bless you all
Been reborning for a year now. Have been using Genesis heat set paints. Have a Nuwave just for reborning. There are several reasons I don't like Genesis. Getting ready to change over to acrylic (Basic, folk art, and apple barrel). I will probably be bouncing back and forth between acrylics and Genesis just because I don't want to lose my experience between Genesis.
Is it normal for genesis heat set paints to come of ? Got new doll and paint has come of both toes I'm getting him fixed tomorrow I'm worried now about changing his clothes in case paint comes again :(
Have you ever used prisma color pencils for the details? I wonder if those would work better because of the control issue. Just a thought. I know how to use acrylics on paper and canvas, but vinyl will be very challenging. How do you get the matte varnish to not be so sticky?
I do use the prisma pencils to do hair before I paint over the hair... I've thought about trying it on the eyebrows, but it doesn't seem to draw very well on the vinyl... I don't use the Genesis matte varnish (I use Deco Art sealer, blue label) but the texture of the babies I have who have been sealed with that are definitely more coarse, like a sandpaper like texture. To get the acrylics to stick to the vinyl, you definitely need to prep the vinyl... I use Folk Art Glass and Tile Medium to prep but have also heard Winser Newton is good so I'm going to try that as well.
There is a softer lead Prisma Pencil and a another brand also that is a lot more expensive but it seems to work. I have forgotten about the Windsor Newton Brand I use to use those in my Art classes.
Here are the Prisma ones www.amazon.com/Prismacolor-Premier-Colored-Pencils-Count/dp/B000E23RSQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1499040449&sr=8-1&keywords=soft+lead+color+pencils. The other ones are Derwent www.amazon.com/Derwent-Colored-Drawing-Pencils-0700672/dp/B000J6DLH4/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1499040885&sr=8-10&keywords=derwent+colored+pencils. These are the high end colored pencils because they are good for layering.
I am interested to know whether one type of paint is better over time than the others? all my babies are painted with genesis. one is around six years old and her paint is almost entirely gone but I am not her first mum so I don't know how she was treated before coming to me. My other two, one three years old and the other two years, were painted by the same artist and have only belonged to me, I feel that both have become a little less coloured and a little shinier over the time I have had them. One originally had this chalky sandpaper texture but has lost this on the areas that are most touched (making me think it must be due to the type of varnish) the other is lighter painted and although she is newer she seems to be losing colour rapidly. I am aware this will happen because I handle my babies and play with them but I am curious as to whether air dry paints would last longer
It's a very good question. I don't handle my babies a whole lot so they are all pretty much kept in "like new" condition. It's to be expected that the paint will eventually wear off and probably need a "re-touch" over time. I would think the durability of the paints is about the same whether it's GHSP or air dry.
They are both beautiful but not for sure I can tell a difference. It looks like the air dry baby has more colors painted on, green and blues where the other artist looks like she didn't use as much color. I use Genesis and bake my dolls in my garage so I don't have to smell the fumes. I loved watching your youtube and may give the air dry paints a try. Thanks for sharing.
I don’t know if you still answer questions...... but I’m doing my first doll and want to root thick curly mohair - but don’t know how much to order.....I want it longer and more curly than baby in pink- Can you tell me how much curly mohair to order for a 19 inch doll? Thank you sooo much!! Kellye
Hi there! I really don't know the answer to this question as I usually do painted hair on my own dolls. Perhaps ask another artist? Sorry I couldn't be of more help. xoxo
Air dry paints have a more "painterly" quality in the finished product, while the heat-set paints can tend to look air-brushed. I prefer acrylics - just be certain to prep the vinyl with a matte varnish before painting in order to avoid paint peeling.
Little Foot Nursery ~ DecoArt Ultra-Matte Varnish by Americana - really smooth stuff and will extend your acrylic paints ❤️ If layered with a textured sponge, it will also give texture to the vinyl skin - blending extenders can also be added to this mixture in order to extend the dry time (Folk Art Blend Extender for acrylics) 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Aw, you are so sweet - thank you! These two babies in this video are not my work but I have a lot of photos of my dolls on facebook.com/littlefootnursery1. I haven't tried the Walmart paints before... I would just make sure that you are using professional artist grade acrylic paints. I use the Che'Air dry paints that you can buy at www.reborningpaints.com. I haven't used anything else but I like these paints :)
Hi Carol! I highly recommend Che'Air dry paints. They are very easy to use and non-toxic. The website is www.reborningpaints.com. There is also a forum you can join and you can purchase and also take some free classes in reborning: reborningartists.proboards.com

This is on my list of videos I want to make... I just need to get around to it!
I would love this too, as I'd love to start rebirning myself ❤

Informstive & concise discussion which I appreciate immensely. Thank you!
Thanks so much for discussing this and giving your perspective. ❤🌹Does sealing with matte varnish change the skin tone?

its clear so it usually doesnt unless you mix it with paint before applying

I wonder how durable the acrylic paint is compared to heat set? Does it rub or scrape off?
It can if you're not careful, but if properly sealed, it should be ok.
@@LittleFootNursery thanks! I've been looking into some dolls with that type of paint and wanted more information on it first.

Great tip! What matte varnish do you like to use? I'd love to know! I'm forever on the hunt for the best one :)

Great video I am about to begin reborning and I think I am going to do air dry paints vs genesis paints
I personally like it. I know they are a little harder to work with but I like not having to bake between layers plus lower health risks. xoxo
Little Foot Nursery Yes great point plus the paint is more affordable and your babies look better than the genesis babies in my opinion.
Your babies look real.
Can I use Walmart acrylic paints or no?
