As a Zimbawean, I am finding this a very interesting, well researced series revealing to me a part of African history that is rarely covered by historians on UA-cam or elsewhere. Thank you.
Uganda is lucky to have had Obote. We were in a transition phase, 40+ tribes suddenly clamped together in a single country, problems were bound to arise. Say what u want about the man, but had it not been for the 1966 situation some people would be praising him today as well.
He was one of the worst leaders Uganda ever had. Some people were blindly attracted to the fact that he was a charismatic speaker but he was a chronic alcoholic who spent most of his presidencies drunk...if it had not been for him, there would have been no Idi Amin. He's the one who named Amin Army Chief of Staff because he wanted someone he thought would be 'stupid' easily controllable/manipulated. It ended up backfiring on him (who would have imagined🙄?). You would have thought that in his second time, he would have learned his lesson, but he was even worse! He started out by rigging the election and it all went downhill from there.
I'm Zambian and I'm watching this from Kitwe right now!!! I never ever heard of Obote living here...its funny how much of ourselves we do not know...out of curiosity though, which part of Kitwe!?
I'm a Nigerian and I'm listening to the history of Milton Obote for the first time even though I've only heard about him especially in the Idi Amin film. I love his virtue, his resilience and his ideologies. Milton Obote was destined to be a leader, he was born to rule. He started his political ambition at the early stage of his life, the imperialists frustrated his efforts, they barred him from education home and abroad, that never stopped him. He was so determined that he fled Uganda to pursue his dream even as he was reduced to doing menial jobs. He was dogged, resilient and never allowed anything to stop his ambition breaking all the barriers he encountered. When God wants you to be something in life no matter the obstacle of the enemies, no matter the challenges you faced you'll surely get there. That's the lesson i learnt from him, never give up your dream until it becomes a reality. Nice1

Obote was a visionary man he wanted to put all parts Uganda on the same level which angered the then preveleged baganda. And now the same baganda are complaining about the Banyankore for being preveleged if Obote was not overthrow, Uganda would have been better by far

In Uganda there are essentially two ethnic groupings. The Bantu and the non Bantu who are basically Nilotics. Now the Nilotics are sneered upon by the Bantu, who were put into that position by the British and their divide and rule tactic. The British made the Bantu feel kinda superior. So a brilliant Nilotic brain like Obote's was always going to be hated by the Bantu who never wanted to believe that Nilotics can be a brilliant people. That mentality is what caused Obote problems right from the colonial times to date. The current president, Yoweri Museveni used the same ideology to shoot his way into power by galvanizing the Bantu against the Nilotes.
As a ugandan, I don't think obote was a tyrant compared to the current regime. Obote was just naive and delegated power to people who had selfish motives. He was warned about Amin at independence by a white former colonial army commander but ignored it out of naivety, they constantly gave him intelligence reports about Amins illegal activities including torture, smuggling and corruption. Many of these founding fathers were just so naive, the likes of Patrice lumumba, nkwame nkrumah.they so much believed in the ideology of pan africanism forgetting that they had inherited a bunch of tribal communities that were clamped together by colonialists using force
Obote was a cunning, manipulative drunkard who appointed Amin because he wanted someone who he thought he could control. His cunning unfortunately got the better of him as Amin ended up overthrowing him. He then rigged election in 1980 to return to power but his second regime was even worse than the first. His dictatorial and tribalistic tendencies eventually got the better of him, much as they will do for M7
Am also wondering where these people got their history from. He was I believe the farthest from that word. Maybe this is just anti Obote propaganda fuelled by supporters of the current regime to stiffle Ugandan's honour of him.

Divide and Rule define the European ( English, Dutch , French, Belgians ) colonisation world-wide but more so in Africa. In Africa they would tell one ethnic group of Africans that they were better than the other at the same time they told the other ethnic group the same thing and that created animosity among ethnic Africans much to the delight of the European settlers .

Being a Muganda and a Ugandan, I am excited to hear or watch a video showing greater contributions from all Ugandan presidents to the Nation. We are proud that The Kabaka (our king) invited the British to protect us, otherwise we would be colonised, meaning blood shed and Amin for building hospitals etc, no one has come up with the concrete research or information ranking our presidents in terms of achievements. I now know how the cool looking Obote found himself in Zambia as I used to see him in Lusaka ..yet I never knew that the cool looking man had serious naked skeletons. So with the warning from Museveni, the man died in exile..for sure, our brothers and sisters in Uganda have not always have it easy. But nothing is permanent as times change. Peace be in Uganda..
Thank you for wishing our country Uganda peace. Our people suffered under past regimes and are beginning to enjoy peace in it's truest form now. The warning given to Obote by Museveni I believe came in 1996 when the first free and fair general elections were held since 1962. Obote had announced that he would contest the elections and had allegedly entered into some power sharing deal with Dr Paulo Ssemogerere of the Democratic Party, ironically whose election victory in 1980 had been stolen by Obote. So Obote had travelled from Lusaka to Nairobi in Kenya and was preparing to fly to Uganda when Museveni made that announcement. So that is how Milton Obote's bid for power for the third time was thwarted.
Very true. I'm in Singapore and we hardly get news of Africa. And what little we receive tends to be negative and portrays Africa in a bad light. One of my favorite human beings is Nelson Mandela.
Thank you for this! When I heard “…the need to reach out to tribal leaders to bridge the divides among them..”, it hit me that’s actually a common theme in the African geopolitical sphere pre-slave trade and colonization. Looks like our people were so busy fighting each other and failed to identify who the real enemy was. Of course, there were some greedy chiefs who were active participants in the slave trade, too. Secondly, who were the invisible hands behind the resistance? Who was (or were) providing the national resistance army with ammunitions? We have always been, and most probably still are, a pawn in others' political ideologies. Have we learnt our lesson yet though?
Unfortunately when he got the power, he became tribalistic, sectarian and brutally repressive as well. In African politics we have not yet learned how to handle those who disagree with us with civility, with the possible exception of Mandela in South Africa as well as in Botswana.
Unfortunately, It is common worldwide. Look at other ' developing countries and the strongman usually always acts like this. China, Russia, Myanmar. Philippines, South America, Cuba, the list is endless. Enriching themselves at the expense of the people is all too common. Thankfully, the United Kingdom and USA were able to get rid of their buffoons, but sadly, will / has replace them with someone who can be bought and with an equal lack of talent. Democracy can be overated.
Uganda is called the Republic of Uganda today because of Obtote's role in unifying the country, otherwise, it would have remained under kingdoms and chiefdoms with Buganda being dominant. He was a nationalist and the father of the nation. To date, the infrastructure and economic development he did for Uganda within the nine-year rule still stand out. He was loved by all parts of Uganda except the Buganda region. The British and US used Amin to stage a coup against him because he had refused to be their puppet. He died a poor man because he didn't loot the country, unlike today.
I support and belong to the NRM but I believe Apollo Milton Obote was a great leader. Most if his actions for which he is often castigated were largely inevitable! Obote like many other African 'founding fathers' presided over a highly ethnic country and yet it's his responsibility to develop and unite Uganda. MHSRIP.
Obote, the father of the Ugandan nation, yes there's no question about it. But his approach to the politics and leadership of a young nation and legacy produced two very brutal despots: Amin and Museveni. Still more more tyrants are being produced and coming. Obote was a great leader and he's the founding father of Uganda and he managed to unify the country at a time when it would've been easy for regions to break away. Muteesa wanted an independent Buganda which was fine and decided to mobilise for a rebellion which any sensible gov't of course couldn't allow and the repercussions followed. The many deaths that happened during Obote I were as a result of cracking down rebellious Baganda elements and fighting Museveni's NRA rebels in Obote II. Obote should be credited for having achieved socio- economic milestones amid rebellions. In Uganda many schools, hospitals, army barracks, police hqtrs, roads, dams, etc were built under Obote and Museveni gov't has evn failed to maintain them. Yes he made some mistakes but his achievements outweigh the mistakes he made. For God and My Country.
Killing 300,000 people in his second regime isn't "making some mistakes", it's virtually genocide 😢. Unfortunately Museveni is not learning the lessons of the past and is repeating Obote and Amin's mistakes

Most of what Uganda uses today as infrastructure and systems were Obote 1 developments. That means every road, school, powerline, waterworks etc. The current govt has not added a single thing that Ugandans can be proud of.
Please do on John Okello the Zanzibar revolution's leader! It is a shame that official island history claims it was Karume who organized and led the revolution. Very ungrateful how they did Okello, minus Okello till this day Arabs would still be ruling Zanzibar
@abbkk what the heck are you yapping about ? The uganda peoples' congress which milton headed was elected by Ugandans. How the heck do you think he became prime Minister in 1962. Uganda was created by whites and so were most of the african countries.The 1962 federal constitution had provisions catering for all the traditional leaders in Uganda so what are you yapping about .
This channel is awesome. I'm grateful I found it. My father is Angolan and from an early age I took an interest on African history. The sources are scarce and many African history is also shrouded and or based on a western perspective. Thank you for this trully African production.
Are you really a Tanzanian as you claim? I dont think you know better than Nyerere, dont rush to comment unless you know all the facts, Obote's only crime was the same as Nyerere's; fighting for your independence.
Summary: Obote would have made a great Uganda if he was given the freedom to lead. The division was too much for any meaningful development. The same story runs in Nigeria. Ethnic tension has made governance a nightmare amidst criminals that call themselves leaders

I think he meant well for the people of Uganda before he was overthrown by Amin. Our problem in Africa is that we don't know what we really want. We went development but we want it to come the east way.

Names that evoke the colonial era - Lake Victoria, Lake Edward, Mount Stanley etc. should be replaced by original names used by local people for generations. That's one more way to give another kick in the ass to those who colonized, exploited, plundered Uganda.
Sometimes a country has different languages and it ends up being diplomatic to keep a foreign name over choosing to use one local name over others. Sort of like if everyone is disappointed then it is acceptable 🤷
Museveni has built more roads and hospitals than Obote but it doesn't fit your NARRATIVE. Museveni has kept Ugandans safe. Buganda will collapse when they kick out nrm. Watch this video and learn from history. When Baganda kick out the central government, they end up in civil war. To be a muganda it seems is to never learn from history
Imagine destroying a thousand-year-old Kingdom because of your greed, jealously and narcissism. All of Ugandan’s problems go back to Obote. He was the first leader to tear up Ugandan’s constitution. His own party UPC was about to replace him democratically, and if they had succeeded imagine the success story Uganda could have been! But instead Obote decided to become a tyrant and rule Uganda by the Gun and fear. King Mutesa II died in exile, I guess what goes around comes around.

A good summary of a very long story. I have to point out two misrepresentations in this video. In Chapter 8, you did not explain what triggered the Tanzanian army to invade Uganda in 1978. The intention was not to return Obote to power, rather it was retaliation to President Iddi Amin's attempt to claim the Kagera region as part of Uganda. In doing so he ordered overnight air raids and started amassing troop at the border. Similarly in the last chapter on Obote's Final Fall, you again fail to mention that Yoweri Museveni, like his predecessor was based in Tanzania and indeed launched his invasion from Tanzania. And another important side note, one of his dependable soilders was a young Paul Kagame.
Amin did not claim the Kagera Salient before but after fighting off an invasion force/mutinous soldiers (depending on who is telling the story).When this force withdrew into Tanzania, Amin's forces, possibly with the knowledge of their boss, continued pursuing them till the Kagera river. It is only then that Amin announced the annexation of this part.The reason Amin forces were able to get this far was because under the Mogadishu peace agreement with Tanzania, each country was to withdraw it's forces up to a certain distance specified in the agreement. Thus Tanzania had no soldiers in this part. Something Amin did not seem to have taken into consideration. Because when Tanzania finally decided to act, it cost Amin his presidency.
Putting All The Tribes Together By Milton Obote Is A Very Big Mistake. And Ruling From The Center Was A Very Serious Error. President Obote Should Have Turned Uganda To A Regional System Of Govt Instead Of Unitary System Of Govt
That is rather a dumb statement. It was not up to Obote to determine how Uganda should be ruled, such decisions can only be made by a democratic means in a multi-ethnic society, otherwise trouble follows, especially if it doesn’t work out. So such a system would be the job of parliament to preside over, and the president just signs it. And in the case of Uganda, majority chose power to be concentrated in the central government

However despite his shortcomings, His intervention created a united Uganda as without that,the countr will have split into fifedoms and become very weak and be exploited by neigbouring countries

Great job! Fantastic brief overview of Uganda's history and Obote's place in it. He's a leader whose alcoholism, tribalism, and naked selfish ambition helped squander what could have been 2 successful chances at the Presidency. It's the history of much of Africa unfortunately. We've been blessed with so much and have reaped from it, so little 😢

Without Obote we would have still been under the yoke of the British, let me guess..Baganda wanted the British because they would have helped them spread their conquest and taken over other people's land. Maybe the current turn of events in the face of current politics are a result of Buganda's wrong strategic moves and all time dishonesty.
Do you think it was selfish for Buganda Kingdom to try to cling on to the two Bunyoro counties that the British stole and gave to them - moreover after the residents voted overwhelmingly to chose to return to Bunyoro? The more I learn about Obote, the more I realize he was a victim of circumstances. What did people expect him to do,hand over power to the whim of a single tribe wanting special treatment? In a country with over 50 tribes? He fought imperialism domestically and abroad which is why he was overthrown by imperialists. He wasn't perfect but he tried
Unfortunately he ended up being the greatest tribalist of all. He didn't have to rig the 1980 presidential election and his army didn't have to kill hundreds of thousands of in the Luweero Triangle. He squandered both his chances at ruling Uganda when few people get a second chance to correct their mistakes😢. Unfortunately his second regime was far worse than the first.... mostly due to alcoholism and selfish ambition.
No wonder Uganda is still lagging behind in terms of development. Patriotism is at an all-time low and tribalism is the order of the day. This inability to put the needs of the nation before those of ones tribe is a recipe for poverty and conflict. No country can develop with such ideas.

African Leaders ( dictators / corrupt or not ) are far much better than the Colonialists and Apartheid criminals who are yet to pay reparations . Truth and reconciliation by the Late Desmond and Nelson was a 100% failure .

Another minor correction to an otherwise brilliant documentary. The National Resistance Army which was led by M7 against Obote (and later the Okellos), was Not based in the Western part of Uganda... It was Formed And Led by people Primarily From the Western part (including many Rwandan refugees like Rwigyema & Kagame), but was Based in and Fought Obote's Army out of the Central Region of Uganda, in Buganda and specifically in the Luweero Triangle.

Between 1979 and 1985 the country was powered by Yusuf Lule,Godfrey Binaisa,Paul Muwanga,Tito Okelo and thereafter Museven overthrew Tito Okelo and take power till today
Most of Uganda's infrastructure development, schools, hospitals etc are credited to Obotes post-independence rule. The other governments have not added to these, and 50 years later the country is still depending on what Obote left.

In Uganda there are essentially two ethnic groupings. The Bantu and the non Bantu who are basically Nilotics.
Now the Nilotics are sneered upon by the Bantu, who were put into that position by the British and their divide and rule tactic. The British made the Bantu feel kinda superior. So a brilliant Nilotic brain like Obote's was always going to be hated by the Bantu who never wanted to believe that Nilotics can be a brilliant people. That mentality is what caused Obote problems right from the colonial times to date. The current president, Yoweri Museveni used the same ideology to shoot his way into power by galvanizing the Bantu against the Nilotes.
As a ugandan, I don't think obote was a tyrant compared to the current regime. Obote was just naive and delegated power to people who had selfish motives. He was warned about Amin at independence by a white former colonial army commander but ignored it out of naivety, they constantly gave him intelligence reports about Amins illegal activities including torture, smuggling and corruption. Many of these founding fathers were just so naive, the likes of Patrice lumumba, nkwame nkrumah.they so much believed in the ideology of pan africanism forgetting that they had inherited a bunch of tribal communities that were clamped together by colonialists using force

Obote was a cunning, manipulative drunkard who appointed Amin because he wanted someone who he thought he could control. His cunning unfortunately got the better of him as Amin ended up overthrowing him. He then rigged election in 1980 to return to power but his second regime was even worse than the first. His dictatorial and tribalistic tendencies eventually got the better of him, much as they will do for M7
Am also wondering where these people got their history from. He was I believe the farthest from that word. Maybe this is just anti Obote propaganda fuelled by supporters of the current regime to stiffle Ugandan's honour of him.

Divide and Rule define the European ( English, Dutch , French, Belgians ) colonisation world-wide but more so in Africa. In Africa they would tell one ethnic group of Africans that they were better than the other at the same time they told the other ethnic group the same thing and that created animosity among ethnic Africans much to the delight of the European settlers .

We are proud that The Kabaka (our king) invited the British to protect us, otherwise we would be colonised, meaning blood shed and Amin for building hospitals etc, no one has come up with the concrete research or information ranking our presidents in terms of achievements. Thank you for wishing our country Uganda peace. Our people suffered under past regimes and are beginning to enjoy peace in it's truest form now. The warning given to Obote by Museveni I believe came in 1996 when the first free and fair general elections were held since 1962. Obote had announced that he would contest the elections and had allegedly entered into some power sharing deal with Dr Paulo Ssemogerere of the Democratic Party, ironically whose election victory in 1980 had been stolen by Obote. So Obote had travelled from Lusaka to Nairobi in Kenya and was preparing to fly to Uganda when Museveni made that announcement. So that is how Milton Obote's bid for power for the third time was thwarted.

When I heard “…the need to reach out to tribal leaders to bridge the divides among them..”, it hit me that’s actually a common theme in the African geopolitical sphere pre-slave trade and colonization. Looks like our people were so busy fighting each other and failed to identify who the real enemy was. Of course, there were some greedy chiefs who were active participants in the slave trade, too. Secondly, who were the invisible hands behind the resistance? Who was (or were) providing the national resistance army with ammunitions? We have always been, and most probably still are, a pawn in others' political ideologies. Have we learnt our lesson yet though?

Uganda is called the Republic of Uganda today because of Obtote's role in unifying the country, otherwise, it would have remained under kingdoms and chiefdoms with Buganda being dominant. He was a nationalist and the father of the nation. To date, the infrastructure and economic development he did for Uganda within the nine-year rule still stand out. He was loved by all parts of Uganda except the Buganda region. The British and US used Amin to stage a coup against him because he had refused to be their puppet. He died a poor man because he didn't loot the country, unlike today.

I support and belong to the NRM but I believe Apollo Milton Obote was a great leader. Most if his actions for which he is often castigated were largely inevitable! Obote like many other African 'founding fathers' presided over a highly ethnic country and yet it's his responsibility to develop and unite Uganda. MHSRIP.

But his approach to the politics and leadership of a young nation and legacy produced two very brutal despots: Amin and Museveni. Still more more tyrants are being produced and coming. Obote was a great leader and he's the founding father of Uganda and he managed to unify the country at a time when it would've been easy for regions to break away. Muteesa wanted an independent Buganda which was fine and decided to mobilise for a rebellion which any sensible gov't of course couldn't allow and the repercussions followed. The many deaths that happened during Obote I were as a result of cracking down rebellious Baganda elements and fighting Museveni's NRA rebels in Obote II. Obote should be credited for having achieved socio- economic milestones amid rebellions. In Uganda many schools, hospitals, army barracks, police hqtrs, roads, dams, etc were built under Obote and Museveni gov't has evn failed to maintain them. Yes he made some mistakes but his achievements outweigh the mistakes he made. For God and My Country.

Most of what Uganda uses today as infrastructure and systems were Obote 1 developments. That means every road, school, powerline, waterworks etc. The current govt has not added a single thing that Ugandans can be proud of.

Names that evoke the colonial era - Lake Victoria, Lake Edward, Mount Stanley etc. should be replaced by original names used by local people for generations. That's one more way to give another kick in the ass to those who colonized, exploited, plundered Uganda.
Sometimes a country has different languages and it ends up being diplomatic to keep a foreign name over choosing to use one local name over others. Sort of like if everyone is disappointed then it is acceptable 🤷

His own party UPC was about to replace him democratically, and if they had succeeded imagine the success story Uganda could have been! This my first time learning about Milton Obote so I want to learn more about Africa so I'm ready for my lessons
A good summary of a very long story. I have to point out two misrepresentations in this video. In Chapter 8, you did not explain what triggered the Tanzanian army to invade Uganda in 1978. The intention was not to return Obote to power, rather it was retaliation to President Iddi Amin's attempt to claim the Kagera region as part of Uganda. In doing so he ordered overnight air raids and started amassing troop at the border.
Similarly in the last chapter on Obote's Final Fall, you again fail to mention that Yoweri Museveni, like his predecessor was based in Tanzania and indeed launched his invasion from Tanzania. And another important side note, one of his dependable soilders was a young Paul Kagame.
Amin did not claim the Kagera Salient before but after fighting off an invasion force/mutinous soldiers (depending on who is telling the story).When this force withdrew into Tanzania, Amin's forces, possibly with the knowledge of their boss, continued pursuing them till the Kagera river. It is only then that Amin announced the annexation of this part.The reason Amin forces were able to get this far was because under the Mogadishu peace agreement with Tanzania, each country was to withdraw it's forces up to a certain distance specified in the agreement. Thus Tanzania had no soldiers in this part. Something Amin did not seem to have taken into consideration. Because when Tanzania finally decided to act, it cost Amin his presidency.

That is rather a dumb statement. It was not up to Obote to determine how Uganda should be ruled, such decisions can only be made by a democratic means in a multi-ethnic society, otherwise trouble follows, especially if it doesn’t work out. So such a system would be the job of parliament to preside over, and the president just signs it. And in the case of Uganda, majority chose power to be concentrated in the central government

The more I learn about Obote, the more I realize he was a victim of circumstances. What did people expect him to do,hand over power to the whim of a single tribe wanting special treatment? In a country with over 50 tribes? He fought imperialism domestically and abroad which is why he was overthrown by imperialists. He wasn't perfect but he tried
Unfortunately he ended up being the greatest tribalist of all. He didn't have to rig the 1980 presidential election and his army didn't have to kill hundreds of thousands of in the Luweero Triangle. He squandered both his chances at ruling Uganda when few people get a second chance to correct their mistakes😢. Unfortunately his second regime was far worse than the first.... mostly due to alcoholism and selfish ambition.

No wonder Uganda is still lagging behind in terms of development. Patriotism is at an all-time low and tribalism is the order of the day. This inability to put the needs of the nation before those of ones tribe is a recipe for poverty and conflict. No country can develop with such ideas.

Apollo Milton Obote wasn't a dictator nor was he a tyrant.
Another minor correction to an otherwise brilliant documentary. The National Resistance Army which was led by M7 against Obote (and later the Okellos), was Not based in the Western part of Uganda... It was Formed And Led by people Primarily From the Western part (including many Rwandan refugees like Rwigyema & Kagame), but was Based in and Fought Obote's Army out of the Central Region of Uganda, in Buganda and specifically in the Luweero Triangle.
There many historical facts are missing from yr presentation! is it purposely or ... It's so sad that those who planted the "divide and rule" are presented as the saviour. e g Why is Zimbabwe still sanctioned by the "divide and rule"!!
The documentary is flawed by serious inaccuracies

Like most African leaders and founding fathers Obote was not a Saint. He did a lot for Uganda so credit is definitely due to him for the good he did.

Thank you for the clarification I was wondering if idd amin was ousted in 1979 how did museveni come to power in 1986? But Obote returned to power after idd amin was removed.
Between 1979 and 1985 the country was powered by Yusuf Lule,Godfrey Binaisa,Paul Muwanga,Tito Okelo and thereafter Museven overthrew Tito Okelo and take power till today

Most of Uganda's infrastructure development, schools, hospitals etc are credited to Obotes post-independence rule. The other governments have not added to these, and 50 years later the country is still depending on what Obote left.
Naive people saying that "if he was given a chance to lead...".
He was given a chance and started to act like a child who thinks they know better than everyone, just because the neighbours children(Tanzania) got a new toy(socialism), you almost burn the whole house down coz you want it too.
