Did you check to see if the “Do Not Disturb” is on for that one person? Click on messages, make sure you’re on the main screen and not the text screen of that person, swipe left, click the notification bell, and make sure there’s no moon next to the person’s name. Should work after that...

On the screen that has all your messages, you may notice a bell at the side of the conversation this means the alerts are off. Press and hold on the conversation without clicking in there should be an option to show alerts.

There’s one more thing. When you click on a text message and press “i” on the contact to access info you might want to check if “hide alerts” is turned on.

I JUST FIGURED IT OUT!(For me)
Go to settings on your iPhone.
Go to "Notifications".
Scroll down to "iMessages".
Tap iMessages.
Make sure "banners" is checked.
Go to sounds.
If it says none, pick one.
(Unless you do not want a sound which is fine but I personally like it)
It just fixed for me.
I haven't watched his video yet so sorry if this is in his video but I just figured it out.

I switched from Android to a iPhone 13 Pro. Awesome display, awesome camera but the usability on an Android is so much more intuitive. I never had to search for anything because it just worked right away and if not it was easy to find. The focus thing was a preset for example so I had to come here to understand that I have to change it to get a WhatsApp notification. With Steve the idea was gone too.
