It always gets me when they show his wife, his true love, June Carter Cash standing on the stairs then beside him. When she passed away, he passed a couple months later. This song was written by Trent Reznor from Nine Inch Nails. It's the last track on the Downward Spiral album, which is a concept album, meaning the songs flow into one another as they tell a story. This particular album told the story of Trent's fall into severe depression. He was dealing with addiction issues and mental illness. I took the closing of the piano lid (and the reason I think they they took the trouble to keep it in the video after the music had finished playing) to be symbolic of the closing of a coffin/casket lid on a loved one. The way his fingers lovingly lingered on the lid after it was closed, like saying goodbye to an old friend.

Trust me.. you're not alone in how you feel. I think deep down Johnny knew this would be one of his LAST performances... He poured his SOUL into this and it's evident. I originally heard this performed by NIN because well they created it... but Johnny OWNED this song! He brought about SO many layers to the lyrics and the tone. When a song and an artist can give you the revelation of the things in your own life and make you take notice of the way you effect others. That is a song and artist for the ages. Everyone should listen to these types of songs.
Thank you for listening to this and you got it! I grew up listening to all kinds of music, dad called tv the boob tube back in the 60’s and 70’s. I listened to blues, honky tonk, cajun, opera, country, rock n roll, and western. Always loved music always will it soothes the soul. When I listened to Johnny Cash sing this it touched my soul, he can’t take his “pile of dirt” with him and it takes some men a long time to figure that out. Then it hit me he was saying goodbye to it and us and that hurt. Loved him in Folsom Prison there is a show about that he actually went to the prison to sing for the prisoners, was a lot of emotion it was either Johnny or his father spent some time there. The Highway men are stars and they were fantastic. Johnny Cash, Wille Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson and I think Johnny Paycheck until he went to prison. Johnny Paycheck was popular for Take This Job And Shove It he was a different kind of singer.
I came to this reaction because I had never seen one done out in nature. The moment he started talking I was blown away by the fact that this guy is on another level. I look forward to seeing more videos.
I know you’re a soulful person, so I knew this was going to touch you. You know Johnny had regrets for the hurt he had caused other throughout his life. It is certainly a cautionary song - in the end, everything material you build ends up being an “empire of dirt”. Focus on what’s important. Wow! What a song to go out on! I was never a huge country fan, but you gotta respect greatness. Like you said, find those “soul songs” that transcend all boundaries. Cheers!
I am a fan of just about all genres of music,, but there has never been a song that f'd me up as bad as this one. I've heard it a million times and I get emotional every single time. Great reaction, brother.
“I wear the black for the poor and the beaten down, Livin' in the hopeless, hungry side of town, I wear it for the prisoner who has long paid for his crime, But is there because he's a victim of the times. I wear the black for those who never read” ---Johnny Cash
Nobody can tell a story like Johnny Cash or Bob Seger! Definitely one of my favorite songs, hit you deep but sometimes you just want to get in that mood I listen to it often. RIP Johnny Cash
"I'll fly a star-ship across the Universe divide, And when I reach the other side. I'll find a place to rest my spirit if I can. Perhaps I may become a highwayman again. Or I may simply be a single drop of rain. But I will remain. And I'll be back again, and again and again and again and again...." - Johnny Cash - The Highwaymen."
Abra, Sir, do you realize that you've bridged a chasm that has torn our country apart? A hiphop man pulling together a song written by one of the best industrial metal artists ever (Trent Reznor/Nine Inch Nails) and a country and western icon who experienced the same personal crises that inspired Reznor!!! It makes a statement that needs to be heard now! Thank you, for your genius in bringing your reaction to us.
I've never done any drugs, but I've been deeply depressed for many years and yeah, the feeling this song can evoke is insane... "I WILL let you down, I WILL make you hurt". When you're in that dark place for a long time, it feels like no matter what you do, you will inevitably end up letting everyone down and just be a nuisance, so it's better to distance yourself from everyone.
Or like a lot of people from Broken homes...its hard to have a lasting meaningful relationship...when you have No example of what that looks like, and are so afraid to lose someone that you just can't ever put yourself in that position, and end up either Consciously or subconsciously Sabotaging the Relationship...

Amazing reaction bro. One of a few times the music video adds to the song. It’s heavy heavy. His wife was his everything and he lost his will to live when she left this earth. This song does feel like a goodbye from a man upon reflecting on his death bed has a lot of regret. Even with all the peaks he accomplished in music he realizes none of it mattered in the end and all he wants is to be back with his wife.
Reznick's song and Cash's interpretation are deep and raw, and so is your reaction. I love how emotionally open and present you are with different genres of music.
A truly thoughtful, reflective, quietly passionate reaction to a piece of music that deserves it. This is *such* a powerful 'swan-song' from someone known for making music that touched *so many!* R.I.P. Johnny Cash! May your music continue to both entertain *and* inspire for generations upon generations! [Just so you know ... I am *very* picky about subscribing to UA-cam channels, but here goes ...]
Thanks man for recognizing this song. NIN created it but Johnny Cash covered in so that the masses would listen to the core meaning. Focus on what is important. Not what you think is important but what IS important. Thank you Trent, thank you Johnny and thank you Abra for posting this.
Bro, this song is sung with the emotion of someone who wants to make ammends for all his wrongs. It's the song of a dying man who wants to make things right. The original song was written by Trent Reznor, but after Johnny Cash did his version, Trent Reznor said "it's Johnny's song now"
Trent Reznor if the Nine inch Nails write this. When he heard Johnny's rendition he was blown away. This song really fit the time of what was left of his life. Not long after the release his wife died, and Johnny within a few months. One of those songs that people feel, doesn't matter the genre. Another great review Brother !
This one tears me up every time. Loved Johnny. Thanks for really listening, I knew from the first reaction video of yours that I watched that you were paying attention. 💜💚💛✌️
Great reaction.... this is a song and performance unlike any other..... it's transformative. You are very right , within those few minutes it transports you to all the things we did wrong ,and makes us want to make things right.
Johnny Cash was my Dad's idol. They were both tall guys with dark hair, and Dad even dressed in black a lot to imitate him. Johnny died in September of 2003, and my Dad died in December of that year. There's a lot of emotional baggage in this song for me. I really believe that Johnny Cash knew his time on earth was short, so he chose to go out with a bang. This song is that bang. Keep up the great work, man.
Johnny Cash sets such a high bar for authentic country music that it's very difficult for any other male country music singer to rise above. Very few have come close. Thanks for keeping it real.
You started with the best song of country, if it can even be truly called that. I am a fighter and still teach it today, but that easily pulled some tears out of my stubborn face.
Hello and great review Sir. Someone earlier has recommended Johnny Cash's song, "God's gonna cut you down". I recommend the official video. You will see many music and acting legends paying a well done tribute to Johnny Cash. I predict the message will be worthy of you dropping some bombs. :)
This was the end of his life what a remarkable life it was I highly recommend checking out some stuff from when he was younger anything from fulsome prison is fantastic this cover version breaks my heart
Haunting...beautiful ... This man is reflecting on his life..his regrets....such sorrow and pain....the words are so powerful...they cut you deep... This is Cash....in all his glory This is his goodbye. ...
The Man in Black is as much of a Legend as James Brown, Little Richard or Elvis. Men, ARTISTS that built the Foundations that the current Generation stands on. edit: Trent of Nine Inch Nails wrote the song to RAGE against Addiction, a wasted life & a senseless death. Johnny sang the same song as a anthem of a hard-lived life & a death filled with regrets & missed opportunities.
A powerful video by a great man. His wife passed, then his broken heart stopped and he passed. This song IMO was his swan song, saying goodbye to everyone and everything he loved. May he and his wife Rest In Peace. Thank you for being so respectful to the Man In Black.
There are very few artists can can cover an iconic song from another. Johnny is one of them. This was his last recording. The love of his life, June Carter Cash, died. Although Johnny was in I’ll health, when she died, that day he lost his will to live. They were truly, truly in love. When people say, oh they died of a broken heart, it can happen. They had a love that, at least for me, couldn’t possibly exist. I hope for all you others out there, it does. One comment said the piano closing was symbolic of the closing of his coffin. I guess how I took it was the same only written different. I took that as he closed that piano, he closed down his music forever and his life! Within 6 months a truly legendary singer and musician was laid to rest along side the love of his life. I’m a life long Rocker, BUT who didn’t love Johnny and everything he stood for. RIP Mr. Cash!!
Great reaction. I like the smoothness of your voice, and attitude. Unusually people are all hyped up, but you're so laid back that you don't take away from the song yet I was able to see you felt the words. If that makes any sense. Again great reaction.
glad to be here brother! got a couple more for you...brooks & dunn "believe '... brad paisley & alison krauss "whiskey lullaby '... chris stapleton 'tennesee whiskey"
Either Way Chris Stapleton Charlie Rose live version. It's not on UA-cam reaction anywhere hardly. But the lyrics wow. Especially for mature people who have lived life. If you react to Chris Stapleton ALWAYS do the live video 😆 he is just better live. Pure talent.
Major props to you my man, for actually listening to the song and then reacting to it rather than interrupting it every few minutes to hear yourself speaak.
Johnny cash was a legend of country music, the man never agreed or sang anything that went against what he thought was truthful. All love my boss, stay receptive to the world.💯
I watch a lot of reactors on YT, and I can’t help but respect the fact that you don’t pause song’s/video’s...you make the odd comment as it plays but generally you just sit back and vibe to the tune and take it all in. That’s what exploring music is all about, much love and respect my dude ✌🏻❤️ from 🇨🇦
The man in black.... I love watching this reaction videos. Because they show me that beneath all the color, race and whatever. We all have things in common and we can see them as long as we are willing to listen to the feelings of love and pain that we all go through. Thank you for making me feel that I’m NOT alone.
I found your reaction channel. Like you said everyone knows the name Johnny Cash. I heard that this song was worth a listen. I figured we would listen to it together. What struck me was when he sang it, I believed him. "You can have it all, this empire of dirt." I reminds me of a poem. ( Bag of Tools). I am still reeling from his delivery. Here is this old man, we all know, looking right at us and saying, Hey, there is some stuff I regret. And whatever I have gained in this life, it is nothing more than dirt. because in the end, all his friends have gone away. 'I hurt myself today, just so I can feel the pain' The lyrics are brutally honest. When we look back, did we help or did we hurt, did we give more than we took. Thanks for the reaction. I liked/subbed.

Cheers!
Thank you. In my humble opinion, this is the greatest recording by Johnny Cash.
That piano...he closed his coffin...
Yeah, he was saying goodbye to an old friend, and by extension, us (all of his fans). There will never be another Johnny Cash.
I am a fan of just about all genres of music,, but there has never been a song that f'd me up as bad as this one. I've heard it a million times and I get emotional every single time. Great reaction, brother.
"The Man in Black" and "A Boy Named Sue" are other classic Johnny Cash songs worth checking out
Yeah, Man in Black is especially good for someone new to his work. It really good for introducing Johnny Cash, the person, not just his music.
“I wear the black for the poor and the beaten down,
Livin' in the hopeless, hungry side of town,
I wear it for the prisoner who has long paid for his crime,
But is there because he's a victim of the times.
I wear the black for those who never read”
---Johnny Cash
Nobody can tell a story like Johnny Cash or Bob Seger! Definitely one of my favorite songs, hit you deep but sometimes you just want to get in that mood I listen to it often. RIP Johnny Cash
R.I.P. Johnny Cash
That is what country, the old school real country can do. It's about life and as it is said keeping it real. Emotion, conviction, and reflection.
If you have any type of addiction this song is bound to hit you hard.
It’ll wake you, your whole life flashing in front of you all his time and all the people are dying friends family and you want the ball alone you think of your mortality. Love you brother I haven’t seen your while I got you under the bell whenever he comes up like it now, ID channel was the 👍 brother I cried my eyes out !!!! I’m
Thank you , and it’s definitely heavy
Reznick's song and Cash's interpretation are deep and raw, and so is your reaction. I love how emotionally open and present you are with different genres of music.
A truly thoughtful, reflective, quietly passionate reaction to a piece of music that deserves it. This is *such* a powerful 'swan-song' from someone known for making music that touched *so many!*
The original song was written by Trent Reznor, but after Johnny Cash did his version, Trent Reznor said "it's Johnny's song now"
Great reaction. Bless you 🙏🏻❤
Thank You 🙏🏾✌🏾
Trent Reznor if the Nine inch Nails write this. When he heard Johnny's rendition he was blown away. This song really fit the time of what was left of his life. Not long after the release his wife died, and Johnny within a few months.
One of those songs that people feel, doesn't matter the genre.
Another great review Brother !
Such an honest song based on his life. Not many songs bring me to tears. It really makes you evaluate youre life.
This one tears me up every time. Loved Johnny. Thanks for really listening, I knew from the first reaction video of yours that I watched that you were paying attention. 💜💚💛✌️
Thank you and indeed ,Great Art
To know that Johnny was working on this when June passed breaks my heart.
Cash is the man in black, another powerful song he did
Johnny cash: God's going to cut you down. Your doing a great job. Rock on.
Thank you and I’m going to check that
Great reaction.... this is a song and performance unlike any other..... it's transformative. You are very right , within those few minutes it transports you to all the things we did wrong ,and makes us want to make things right.
Absolutely
Cash is more than an artist. He's a presence
Agreed
Totally
Johnny Cash was my Dad's idol. They were both tall guys with dark hair, and Dad even dressed in black a lot to imitate him. Johnny died in September of 2003, and my Dad died in December of that year. There's a lot of emotional baggage in this song for me. I really believe that Johnny Cash knew his time on earth was short, so he chose to go out with a bang. This song is that bang. Keep up the great work, man.
He had some more lighthearted songs too. Like "A Boy named Sue" and "One Piece at a Time".
And it didn't cost me a dime...
One piece at time...😂
Dirty Egg Sucking Dog is another light hearted song
One piece at a time is one of my all favorites
Johnny Cash sets such a high bar for authentic country music that it's very difficult for any other male country music singer to rise above. Very few have come close. Thanks for keeping it real.
David Bowie’s “Lazarus” evokes similar feelings, it was his last music video.
That is definitely intense....
Indeed i will and thank you , He's an icon
2:19 Why you do me like that? Scared the shit out of me :D
He was saying goodbye after reflecting on his career and life! Closing the piano keys cover is symbolic with closing a casket!
He's just saying, "Life's real short and a bitch, don't screw it up!"
This is Cash....in all his glory
This is his goodbye.
This was great. Could you do more Johnny Cash? I’d love to see The Man in Black, Bad News, or Jackson. Have a good one, brother.
RIP Mr. Cash!!
Check out Blue Eyes Crying In the Rain or Angel Flying Too Close to the Ground by Willie Nelson.
That one cuts deep, I hear you man, you reflect on your own life when you hear this. It's incredible how it does that. It's Magic
The Hebrew word for Abracadabra is; "I will create as I speak"
Great reaction. I like the smoothness of your voice, and attitude. Unusually people are all hyped up, but you're so laid back that you don't take away from the song yet I was able to see you felt the words. If that makes any sense. Again great reaction.
I find Johnny's cover of Rusty Cage by Soundgarden equally as incredible.
Rusty Cage , got it
Absolutely!
glad to be here brother! got a couple more
for you...brooks & dunn "believe '... brad paisley & alison krauss "whiskey lullaby '... chris stapleton 'tennesee whiskey"
When June walks down the stairs I always tear up cause she had passedb
Do “Believe” by Brooks and Dunn you will be blessed
I’m glad you are so opened minded and understand good music. I’m happy I found your channel ❤️
You need to try Cris Stapleton. He's on a class is his own
And yet very similar in his ability to tell a story, and really hit you hard. Plus the actual voice is amazing
Broken Halos
Either Way Chris Stapleton Charlie Rose live version. It's not on UA-cam reaction anywhere hardly. But the lyrics wow. Especially for mature people who have lived life.
If you react to Chris Stapleton ALWAYS do the live video 😆 he is just better live. Pure talent.
Your reaction is golden - same thing happened to me
✌🏾🙏
you're a thoughtful deep thinker...I appreciate that in you. BTW looks like this comment to you is #303!!! How about that. Peace to you.
Thank you and wow, lol , Peace to you
It’s very possibly his greatest song - God gave him
this brilliant burst right before the end. Bless you Abracadabra.
Love Johnny! Try boy named sue
Ok
You're a deep, thoughtful, reflective reacter. Love it.
Died months after his wife nothing else to live for without her
Major props to you my man, for actually listening to the song and then reacting to it rather than interrupting it every few minutes to hear yourself speaak.
React to "Man in Black" live! gracias.
Gotcha
Johnny cash was a legend of country music, the man never agreed or sang anything that went against what he thought was truthful. All love my boss, stay receptive to the world.💯
You should do Nine Inch Nails versión too 🙏
I will
I watch a lot of reactors on YT, and I can’t help but respect the fact that you don’t pause song’s/video’s...you make the odd comment as it plays but generally you just sit back and vibe to the tune and take it all in.
That’s what exploring music is all about, much love and respect my dude ✌🏻❤️ from 🇨🇦
Yes! A prime example of how to do a cover song right. He made it his own, and your reaction speaks to the truth of this. Thank you!
Legend of country music
