  • A deadly 7.6-magnitude earthquake and dozens of aftershocks have rocked central Japan, trapping people under the rubble of collapsed buildings, and forcing thousands of residents out of their homes and into evacuation centres. Neetu Garcha reports on the tsunami fears, the warnings to displaced residents and the potential aftershocks keeping the country on edge.
While Israel's war on Hamas rages, the fighting could soon enter a new phase, as Israel says it intends to withdraw some of its reservist troops from Gaza. Redmond Shannon explains why and where a former Israeli intelligence official believes this violent conflict could head next.
The Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL) has dropped the puck on its inaugural season, with Toronto hosting New York in the first game. Seán O'Shea reports on the excitement, and how the goal for equity has yet to be achieved.
Tis the season for New Year’s resolutions. From saving to tackling debt and cleaning up your personal finances, regardless of your financial situation, experts say there’s one very important thing to factor into your money-related resolutions for 2024. Anne Gaviola shares the most crucial economic reality that should shape your financial planning this year.
Italian sandwich and coffee shops are popping up all over Montreal. Dan Spector reports on how even the most chic new shops could not survive without one key ingredient: family.
Plus, in a winter where skiers and snowboarders are lamenting the lack of snow, there is one sport celebrating the conditions. Sarah Ryan looks at how Alberta is becoming a hot spot for ice sailing.

@ajfhalfj . You're the litteral living definition of "you must be fun at parties" If thats the Case, Praying is no different than the people saying "free palestine" who aren't really doing anything to help palestine. Are you gonna say anything about that too, lol?

The Palestinian are victims of the Israel's taxes system.
The gdp earnings goes to Israelis banks and what goes to Palestine Government is only a 40% of the worth. Controlled by Israel for decades.
Hamas had been under Israel's suppression on limited basics such as electricity, food, and commodities.
For over 70 years, a lifetime of living like in a large prison, hopelessly with the UN turned their head and pretend just doesn't see along with the so called ' international laws '.

We are definitely having one of the worst time, there are still people who can’t escape and stuck under the collapsed houses. Moreover, a plane crashed at Haneda airport and again, people died.
We completely lost festive atmosphere for the new year and I, also have been feeling devastated and downhearted for the people who’re suffering right now.
What a start of 2024. I also hope things gets better soon and I feel sorry for people who lost their loved ones.

13:16 Global National gaslights you to focus on your own financial shape, not the Government that made your life harder. Offers excellent financial advice like cancelling your Disney+ subscription.

This Japan 🇯🇵 earthquake, a magnitude of 7.6, is *10 times bigger and 35 times more powerful* than the recent one in China 🇨🇳 with magnitude of 5.9.

I like how you have brought in the difference here showcasing how a small change in magnitude has such a large variation in energy release. But would like to point out a correction. The difference in maginitude is around 1.7. which implies that Yesterdays quake is at least 50 times more powerful and would have realised at least 350 times more energy than China quake.

@@krishnaprasadkumbalath9108This is a reply from Chat GPT: The magnitude scale, also known as the Richter scale, is logarithmic. This means that each whole number increase in magnitude represents about a tenfold increase in the amplitude of seismic waves and a roughly 31.6 times increase in the energy release.
Comparing a magnitude 7.6 earthquake to a magnitude 5.9 earthquake:
      - The magnitude 7.6 earthquake would have a seismic wave amplitude about 10 times larger than the magnitude 5.9 earthquake.
      - The magnitude 7.6 earthquake would release approximately 31.6 times more energy than the magnitude 5.9 earthquake.
      - Therefore, the magnitude 7.6 earthquake is significantly larger and more powerful than the magnitude 5.9 earthquake.

A tsunami will not occur unless the earthquake that is a horizontal force results in a vertical displacement of water, such as if an underwater volcano is triggered creating a bulge on the ocean floor that collapses.

Apparently it was a shallow earthquake. Maybe that could have also influenced the outcome?? Sorry if this is not applicable.

It did cause a mini tsunami several boats got pushed ashore bunch of houses drowned and trucks smashed up. The epicenter was off the coast of Noto Peninsula 86km away from shore. Depth was 30km to the sea floor.
