If you honestly believe that I would ever accept any form of compensation for a review, you obviously don't know me at all and more importantly you have no idea how anything sponsored or paid works. If I failed to disclose something like that the FTC could fine me 40k+and my channel could get deleted, not to mention the obvious reputational damage. I have not received any compensation of any sort for this, I just liked the game and it is my goty in an otherwise underwhelming year. I did not even attend their preview event. I'm glad other reviewers have expressed their opinions about why they DONT like it, because that is how reviews work and people should see it from all angles, I said it would be divisive in this very video.
what's bonkers is the people that are attacking you didn't even play the game themselves yet, they're just doing it for the bandwagon, the more i see situations like this the more i refuse to blindly go with the flow with any hate train against anything unless i know what the hell it's all about, this shit must be addictive to these people
This is so wild. I only check out two game reviewers - Mortismal and Skill Up. And hearing you saying "Best entry in the series, game of the year", while Skill Up completely demolished it and says "Not recommended" is very confusing
I think it's very fair that different people have different opinions. Mort has never really been a huge Dragon Age fan, especially not of Origins, and he either prefers turn-based tactical combat OR action combat. He didn't like the real-time-with-pause combat in Origins, and so this new action combat suits him better. I'm surprised he said it's the best entry of the series despite literally mentioning the fact that your character can ONLY be a hero and can't even be mean to others, let alone make evil choices - it's an RPG, where's the roleplaying? Anyway, whether *you* will personally want to play Veilguard comes down to what your preferences are. Watch as many different reviews as you can, and make your decision based on what you care about.
Opinions are opinions but watering down dialogue and choices/consequences, happy go lucky tune without ANY risks is a major put off for me. No matter how shiny the combat systems and graphics.
So that is your opinion, you can make your own video stating them, but you are implying his opinions are wrong with some sort of objectivity, which they are not
@@xXEGPXx in my opinion Need For Speed is an FPS RPG, with a Soulslike level progression. Don't question my opinion, though. That would imply opinions can be objectively critiqued.
I dont see the point of the multichoice dialog wheel if all your choices do pretty much the same thing with no consequences... That's the biggest issue I see with this game.
Slightly better than just having your character talk without input, imo. Picking between "Yes!", "Sure.", "Fine, I guess..." isn't that exciting, but at least it lets you keep holding the reins, which is important. Ideally we'd get multiple branches, maybe even some conflicting ones, but having some input is still better than having no input.
@ no this is equivalent to telling a child do you want the blue medicine or the red medicine…. There’s only an illusion of choice. I’d rather you just narrate the story without these random interruptions that hold no bearing like I don’t know every other game…
EVERY bioware game does this. Especially every mass effect game. ITs always been less of an actual choice and more of your own way of reacting. ITs for immersion purposes only really.
Based mort! Tbh, I mistrust anyone who never has a non-controversial option (e.g. is always on the side of the eco-chamber, as many of the rage baiters do). No one who thinks for themselves will always agree with the "zeitgeist". Hell, I myself hated many games critics and fellow players loved, and vice versa.
I don't get these people saying that positive reviews are paid for. If he needed to pay some bills all he needed to do was read the room and go "oh, everybody hates this game." and make a scalding review to rack in the cash. I think this might be his most disliked video ever. It's only when people actually like a game when people lose their minds. This culture war is destroying gaming and I hate to see my favorite franchise be the hotbed of it right now.
@@gamerforlife3946 No, really it doesn’t make sense. lol it’s not a matter of “opinion”. I’m not sure if it’s a grammar/phrasing issue but what you are trying to say is completely unclear to the reader…don’t get defensive because someone pointed this out. Just clarify what you meant if you care about what you said
@@gamerforlife3946 That’s kinda the problem. Most people that sees a review that isn’t “we dislike game” aren’t going to “agree to disagree” The problem with gaming as a whole now is that if you go against the stays quo, your opinion is paid for or irrelevant. Even if you like the game truly CP2077 is like that. I know so many people who will bash me for not liking the game due to the original experience I had with it (I brought it on console when it first dropped. Put 20 hours in before I couldn’t play anymore due to bugs) My experience is automatically thrown out because it’s against what CP2077 is now. DAVG is going to be the same thing. If you don’t hate it you shilling. So no, this isn’t an agree to disagree because most of yall really don’t care of people like it just to like it. It’s not the norm.
As a compulsive "good guy" roleplayer who pretty much always runs my player character as a complete goody-goody, the loss of true roleplaying options still disappoints me given that being a strong point historically for Bioware. Heck, I made myself do a Mass Effect series playthrough once as a hard-nosed pragmatist (so a healthy helping of renegade options, as I always picked the most pragmatic choice regardless of "good" or "bad" morality) and it was an impressively flexible and memorable experience. The loss of roleplaying options in a roleplaying game is just... odd.
Personally I don’t care if a reviewer likes or dislikes a game, the important thing to me is that they explain their position in a way that allows me to make up my own mind of whether I would like the game or not. What i like about Mort is that he always gives his reasons why he liked a game but also why others may not. Im glad Mort liked this game and had fun to %100, however i don’t think I would like this game and will probably play it only if its on game pass.
if you get ea play pro its basically free and i think the subscription is only 16 a month so you can kinda test it out and determine whether you want to continue the game or not for a cheap price also note that i think its only a option for pc
Same, definitely a pass for me till some big sale for it. But I can appreciate where Mort is coming from since he doesn't really care for certain aspect of the game and focus on what he wants from the game.
A surprising 'not recommended' from Skill Up's review followed by an equally surprising 'personal game of the year and best game in the franchise' from Mortismal. I respect both reviewers and both videos make a good case for their opinions on the game. A few other up and down reviews out there too but more leaning positive. Tough to get a true read on this game. Thankfully I had no plans to buy it early on account of being poor. So after the honeymoon phase passes and once we're well into next year I should have a better feel on where this game stands with the masses. I want to see the franchise through so I'll pick it up eventually. Really just a question of how deep a sale I wait for, lol.
Patient gamers might win on this one. Looks like there is fun to be had here, especially as a DA fan, but I might just have to wait a year or two for an 80% off like I did with Andromeda.
@@WrathOfImperium did fex mention how he used to use embedded links on his website to balloon twitch numbers, resulting in them being perma banned too? What an absolute paragon of integrity!
The thing that's most disappointing for me so far from what I've seen is the fact that Rook is not really a character you can roleplay. You *have* to be the hero, and if you interact with people you *have* to be nice, or sassy at most. Now I'm not saying the game had to give us choices to be fully muahaha twirling-moustache-villain, but I thought the choices we had in Inquisition were quite good, and allowed you to roleplay as perhaps a more selfish or power-hungry character, or else a character with certain biases towards magic or other aspects of society in Thedas. Even if in my main playthrough I mostly made "good" choices, the fact that the evil or morally questionable choices existed made my choice feel more meaningful. And I did still make some evil/questionable decisions, nevertheless. Been a DA fan since 2010, and I'm not sure Veilguard is for me. I didn't play any of the DA games for the combat, but for the story, roleplaying, and worldbuilding, and from what I've seen those are lacking especially since we don't get to import enough choices from previous games. Thank you for your review after 100%, though! I always prefer to watch your reviews even if our tastes don't align, because you go in depth about all the different elements of the game and I can make a truly informed decision on whether I want to play it or not.
This. I always play good aligned 99% of the time on a first play though but not being able to even be a dick when it is appropriate really degrades the role playing experience imo.
Obviously you can be a horrible person with certain choices in previous dragon age games like origins and DA2 but dragon age has always had you play the hero. You're always the hero of fereldan, the champion of kirkwall, the herald of andraste.
ehhhh I see what you mean. For the sake of argument I want to bring up role playing games where you specifically play as one character, like witcher 3. You *have* to be a witcher with a set background and history with characters based on a book series. Geralt is a defined character, but the witcher is still a "role playing game," just one where you *have* to play a certain character. A roleplaying game doesnt need to give you the option to play multiple different characters to be considered an rpg. I think that's a misunderstanding I see a lot of people carry. HOWEVER, in the witcher you can still make some choices here and there that book Geralt would NEVER make, like bringing Ciri to Emhyr instead of avenging Vesemir with Ciri, so from a role playing perspective, you can totally fail at playing the character of Geralt, and are punished for it with real consequences in the story. From the impression I'm getting from people who have played Veilguard, playing as the character Rook doesnt give you the option to fail at playing the hero, outside of choosing not to do certain quests. Also the character of Rook doesnt really seem all that interesting to play as in the first place, but I'd have to play it for myself to really decide on that opinion. What is the point of all this? I dont remember and Im bored of writing now so the end.
Let's not overlook that he may also be a Wizard-level hacker that uploaded a piece of his consciousness on the net to play these games in the cloud... simultaneously.

There is something about the art style that I just don't like... it feels like I'm watching the Spiderman game but modded to turn it into a fantasy game
i recently saw an asmongold clip where he was watching a short where a dude showed the bodyproportions being wrong, head is too big, shoulders to slim, the before and after comparison makes it really obvious what makes you feel that way, its a design choice and an awefull one.
It's essentially the Marvel's Avengers or Suicide Squad kind of art style. High saturation, lots of bright colours and smooth surfaces, not much grime or dirt. It has a very broad appeal and keeps the visuals light, but it does so at the expense of realism. Whether it appeals to you or not probably depends on what kind of experience you are looking for.
@@FluffyThieves True, though they were always at least massive savage looking warriors. I fundamentally do not understand what they were thinking.
Personally I'm fine with them not transferring over all choices, but the amount they do transfer is ridiculous. Like...not taking into account who the divine is? Who the king/queen of ferelden is? Whether the warden is alive? That's insane. They can get away with it in this game because it's set in Tevinter, but I genuinely don't know how the hell they'll reconcile those decisions in future games.
@@AbstractTraitorHero As I understand it, this is closing out a particular narrative arc and future games will be totally different, but if Veilguard does well, they'll still be making more Dragon Age games. @@Krayne95 Maybe in the future games if we return to Southern Thedas, we will have the choice to import the saves in the Keep again or maybe choices regarding previous games will be incorporated in the background set-up, Veilguard as is has no need of those choices so they don't exist 🤔
I only regularly follow 3 reviewers: Mort, Skillup, and ACG. One loved it, one slammed it, and one didn't get a review copy. I watch each for different reasons, but such major misalignment rarely happens. It's kind of neat.
@davidd4696 i can't say I've ever had a reviewer hurt my feelings or left me confused. The ones I follow usually enlighten or entertain. Disagreeing with reviewers I respect is OK with me.

The dialog options being weirdly polite is dissapointing, ngl. I don't even roleplay as a bad guy or that much of an asshole but it's nice to have *options* . After all, games are entertainment. I don't find being forced to nod and smile politely when I reeeeeally don't want to all that entertaining. And I do want to *choose* how to act towards a companion, beyond 3 or 4 ways to say "yeah, I'm with you". What an... unusual choice for a game where the party plays a significant role. To be clear: I'm NOT on the... anti-everything side, stooooop. It's just one aspect and I intend to formulate my full opinion by experiencing the game first.
Mort, you didn't really go into detail on the quality of the writing. Are we talking "Baldurs Gate 3" quality or are we talking "Animal crossing, on a good day?"
BG3 is a good game, but the writing is not that good, a lot of 15 years old attitude that can't control his surge of hormones. In Veilguard it seems they are targeting a wider audience towards young people. Not saying it's good or bad, just different marketing push.
@@conorgillespie7832 *if you have nostalgia for it and/or if worldbuilding is your favorite thing. I got into DA late to the party. I disliked Origins for archaic and mostly servicable systems. @reksraven inquisition is seriously so good. I think the gameplay is pretty crap but like. I don't care i loved the characters and plot and the scale of the story felt great. Managing the inquisition at skyhold and the great conversations made that game what it is
@reksraven I know haha. That's why it's so hard for me to make am opinion based on reviews. If something is even mildly interesting I just have to play it myself
The lack of renegade style dialogue options means I will skip this game, maybe I will pick it up on a deep sale. I don't like playing pure heroes in RPGs.
I am really torn. On the one hand it is a true singleplayer game without any cash-grabby microtransaction-BS, it seems to have at least some amount of complexity in its action, it does not stumble into the pitfall of the theme-park open world. It might very well be a enjoyable game. But I want more from Dragon Age. I want my player decisions to have gravitas and even if I nearly never play anything else than a benevolent guy in most RPGs, choice that is a not about moral or trying to do the right thing and more like a choice of different styles, is no interesting choice. I want Thedas to be _my_ Thedas and not to have a total of 3 choices from Inquisition and none from DA:O and DA2 even imported into the game. The whole art direction is already a headache for me, which began with Inqusition, everything I see feels as if someone took Dragon Age, MARVEL-ified it and added a bit of Candy Crush.
Having seen a couple of reviews now, it seems pretty clear the issue is Perspective. Mort played this like it's an ARPG, closer to Path or Diablo, viewing it as diving into the combat system, which he enjoyed. Others came in viewing this as a story game with some combat and felt like they were stuck on rails because you could figure out the "spam to win" combo in the first few minutes and the combat system doesn't require you to do more than that. A huge chunk of the base fanbase for the series is likely to truly hate it because they're there for the story & characters.
Pillars has a lot of lorebuilding however, so i dont really agree with the Diablo reference, Pillars is RPG first and foremost, Diablo is a hack & slash dungeon crawler. I do understand what you mean though.
@@GeoGyf Pillars is a complete game, that's not the issue. It's just the Action RPGs bring on the "choose the meta build" effect. Mort switched to that view and loves the game for it. Anyone coming in with a different view is going to look dimly at the rest of the game.

No evil options(( This sucks. DAO was that good, because there was lots of roleplaying potential. You could leave your companion to die (because she was forcing you into a forced marriage together with your father), you could betray a blood mage to the Circle of mages, destroy werewolves after the curse was lifted and they became human, and lots and lots of other things. while for me personally, this is about as far off from what im looking for in a dragon age game (or an RPG in general) in just about anything, from art style, to itemization, progression, combat, etc.. i give mort credit cause he consistently appears to be one of the few reviewers who do not seem to have already made up their mind on whether to praise or hate on any specific game before even playing through it. and then subsequently "reviewing" it by simply zeroing in on whatever supports or underlines their preconcieved notions. i am not saying its not fair to factor in ones reactions to whatevers been presented pre-release ofc, but reviewers should still give the released product a fair chance in both directions. the amount of reviewers who essentially just do confirmation bias reviews on games these days is a little disheartening, tbh. we can blame the general culture war environment of the present day but i think thats making it a bit too easy on ourselves there. for the controversial nature of this title, i guess it is fairly simple: if you loved DA:O because youre into the more gritty, grounded style of fantasy and/or tactical RPG type of game, then this aint it, chief. if you think DA:O was clunky and sluggish to play, and there wasnt enough colour and flashyness in the world, the characters, or the skill trees, then this might be right up your alley. sucks for me cause i really like the dragon age setting, and the games clearly arent made for my tastes anymore -.-

So if you have a tank companion, now either he can tank up everything and wont die, or he is just not getting most of the aggro? :S
The thing is, from what I understand from reading and hearing about this game, it doesn’t really matter wether you have 2 or 3 companions -companions are pretty much dumbed down to acting as little more than an extra, meaningless spell in your repertoire. You can’t control them, they can’t die (despite having taunt/aggro taking abilities), and they don’t really matter as a whole combat wise. The focus is entirely on the action and controlling your own character with its own set of pointless spells. Its sad to call this mediocre hack n slash game for Dragon Age 4...
@@CJgamer129 Well, I’m not entirely sure what you mean, but yeah, the old Mass Effect games worked more like that. However, Dragon Age wasn’t like that; companions were a very central aspect of the game, in my opinion. Controlling, strategizing, and customizing your team of companions was part of what made Dragon Age unique. Mass Effect was its own experience, which I loved too. Despite being different, old BioWare made it possible for both to coexist back then, and that’s exactly why some players preferred one over the other-which is perfectly fine. Also, Mass Effect companions had a lot of customization options, and their spells could be used independantly, rather than sharing a universal cooldown for all companions, and they could be downed in combat. @@Movel0 i saw a pc gameplay and its the same UI with just keyboard input, even dragon age inquisition as 2 UI controller and keyboard, veilgard UI was design for controller only. all the review i saw are all saying its best to play with gamepad on PC XD
A wheel is not necessarily bad for PC. It can be quite fast to press and quickly aim the mouse in a direction. Kind of like the ping system in LoL. That said, a hotbar should be a thing, and pausing, and not being action.
Man, now I am in a bind… Mort is saying it’s good? Been watching other reviews also and the clips I’m seeing the writing, dialogue overall RP just seems cheesy and a bit childish. Do I trust this review? I dunno, Dragon Age to me is dark fantasy, gritty has substance… Not seeing that in any clips I’ve seen.
He provides fair assessments with caveats that “some people might not enjoy/like…”. If those are the things about the game that turn you off/on about it does it really matter if the reviewer liked it or not? His review is never trying to convince you that YOU will love it.
Mort I have to ask man didn’t you get flown out first class and all the goodies? Is this a true review? I only ask because what you like here you didn’t like in other games.

I find it surprising that this is your personal game of the year. I appreciate that. Altho this year isn't underwhelming for RPG fans though. We got Metaphor Refantazio, Persona 3 Reload to name a few. Wukong is out there too for action gamers.
@@teogeeko37 Yes, and I enjoy RPGs but would never dream of touching either of those titles. That art direction and writing style doesn't work for me at all.
Wow, looking at the comments below, this one needs some popcorn as it's gonna be juicy! 😁 But GotY Mort...? A lot of other sites don't even list this (as yet), rather I'm seeing these: - Helldivers 2 - Warhammer 40K: Space Marines 2 - Astro Bot - Black Myth Wu Kong - Dragon's Dogma 2 - Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth - Metaphor: ReFantazio - Persona 3 Reload - Zelda EOW - Balatro - Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth
I definitely didn't exactly love everything in that list. Dragon Age 2 was a huge disappointment for me and I found Astrobot and Black Myth Wukong to be kind of shallow and uninteresting after a few hours. Balatro and Metaphor are legit bangers. But yeah, there's been so many interesting games this year. I'd easily be able to double that list.
I'm glad you enjoyed the game. I think I'm not going to buy it as it is no real RPG anymore. Thanks for your thoughts tho! You are completely right. Everyone has different opinions and it's good to see more than one review before buying a game. Thanks for staying true to yourself and speaking your opinion even when a lot of people disagree with you. Your channel is super valuable because of that.
If i compare the steam page to that of Dragon age inquisition, it would seem it launches straight from stream after agreeing to 3rd party EULA Inquisition mentions "Incorporates 3rd-party DRM: EA on-line activation and Origin client software installation and background use required." which does not show on Veilguard
The lack of carry over from previous games is the dumbest thing ever. They made 4th part of a long series. I'm guessing if you did one full play through with each game, you're looking at 90-120 hours of gameplay. Which is just cast off and ignored. Now if you churned the game out fast I get it, but you had 10 years to set this game up. 10 years for 3 pretty basic seemingly inconsequential choices. That's enough I dont think I'll try the game. Maybe, maybe someone will find a way to sell it for a significant discount and I who played for almost an embarrassing numbers of hours in the previous games and just want to keep Dragon Age.
hehe the comments are so funny that people think its confusing that game reviewrs have different opinions some people are going to love dragon age veilguard and some are going to hate its just like with all other games.
I personally think the writing dialogue and characters are a downgrade but regardless im glad mort liked it even if i don't unfortunately it won't be getting dlc and im glad others enjoy it its just not for me
This combat style is a dealbreaker for me personally. I know Dragon Age always switches up the combat, but in the past faster systems there was still a tactical element whereas this is just a real-time character action game. I'm in that weird camp where I still wish every single RPG had JRPG style turn based combat.
Mortim Achievement Unlocked: 100% a game BEFORE release. Interesting review, though some definite issues for me, though they were telegraphed. First, he specifically said it's not actually an RPG, and then later he mentioned the button combos (a personal hard limit) and fact you can't choose anything but a good-guy playthrough.
I was always going to play this game regardless of the reviews but I'm happy to hear you really liked it because I trust your opinions on games. I personally love all the DA games for different reasons and expect this one to be no different. Keep up the great work.
Bad writing/dialogue, bad voice acting, lack of choice (you can only play as a good character), only 3 choices carry over. Puzzles are easy, too much hand holding. The combat and art style are up for debate/depends who you ask.
I'm going to spoil the end of DAV for you in the later paragraphs . . . . . . . . I'm serious . . . . . . . All the spots your previous characters had an impact in or did something of significance are gone, wiped off the map by the blight. Invalidating every choice you've ever made in Dragon age. Have fun
Your review was informative with no heavy spoilers. I agree with you about the "T" location. I honestly want to learn their POV from records of Andraste, the magisters sidereal, and ancient elven lore. Thank you for this honest review. Too many people are trying to cancel this game with pre cognitive videos "before release" that this game is completely terrible from specific features in the character creator to the early Oct. low preorder sales. Even now videos are made to not trust professional reviewers like you, but to trust them. lol
I understand where your review and others are coming from. Apparently, people in the comment section didn't watch your video until the end, as it resonates with the main gripe I've noticed across all the videos I've watched so far: the lack of true role-playing. Your main character is constrained by a single line of development that the studio has chosen. In an RPG, this is a massive letdown for me, especially coming from Bioware. More often than not, a good story and the idea that my character is the one making things happen are enough to keep me motivated, so this game is a no for me.
Anyone remember a nice little ARPG called Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning? The Veilguard reminds me of that much more than any DA game. And I enjoyed KoA:R a lot. actually
I loved that one, as well. The only bad thing about Veilguard, from my pov, is that they marketed it as the sequel to a franchise that comes with a certain set of expectations with zero intentions to make good on those. The tone and style practically shout "REBOOT", with the intention to attract new fans, but they were marketing it to people who fell in love with the Dragon Age universe in the grim dark days of Origins.
I'm looking forward to journey with Emmerich and Lucanis. They had most of my interest. Obviously, i'll be grabbing the Grey Warden and Harding for the next playthrough, if I can.
Glad, there was so much for you to enjoy! I still don't like the pixar look of the characters or the sanitized language everybody seems to be using - especially the player character - but this year has been a real drought for me, and I think this might do it for me despite not being perfect. Looks like I'm going to check it out, after all. PS: Don't let the culture warriors get you down. You're solid, Mortim!
I didn't like Inquisition and DA2, and from what you are saying and showing in your review, I do not think this new game is for me... This is a sad year for gamers like me, but I hope this isnt the end for Bioware.
I'm subbed to several content creators who do game reviews and it seems that this game is pretty divisive -- one half loves it, even saying it's a return to form for Bioware, while the other half hates it and would not recommend it. I would suggest waiting for let's plays and judge for yourself whether or not this game is for you. Personally, I am cautiously optimistic. Edit: Also, please don't hate on Mortismal for his personal opinion on the game. What are you even doing here watching this video when your mind is already made up (albeit BEFORE playing the game, might I add). Let those who like the game enjoy it; if you don't, just move on. I hate this trend of hating on folks for having opinions different to theirs.
I've been waiting a few days to let the review come through, especially since I consider most of them untrustworthy. I appreciate that this review looks at the game's pros and cons and doesn't obsessively fixate on reactionary politics or sucking up to Bioware. After Mass Effect 3, I'd rather have only a handful of choices that matter than 200 choices that barely get acknowledged. Now, if it turns out the choices that do get imported still don't matter, then I'll be disappointed. I'm more concerned about the lack of roleplay flexibility and the quality of the dialogue. So far, it looks like it's a Steam sale game for me.
@@AuspexAO But you could be fantastically mean while doing it. I don't need to be able to be evil, I just want to scathingly insult people at every opportunity.
With all the differing opinions in reviews my thoughts and prediction are that there's universal artistic merit found in DA:O that seems to be carried on in a game like Baldur's gate 3, even the Witcher 3, and not this game. A uniformity in Tone that could only be delivered by writers and creators that have had actual life experience. I imagine that in 10 years time, DA:O and BG3 will still be referenced and played and this game will fade to the mists of time, but who knows.
I'm still on the fence about getting this game, it still looks like budget ff7 rebirth to me, i might need a couple more positive reviews to convince me... Plus I'm still kinda pissed off about the wild change of the direction
Do like I'm doing, get the thing at a (much) later date. If you're like me, you have a games backlog too. This is obviously a soft reboot of the DA franchise. The Bioware that made the original games is dead.
I'm personally going to wait a couple days after launch, see what the players say. It seems if you liked inquisition you'll like veilguard despite the dip in roleplay. Most YouTubrs have been positive on the game while people who want the game to fail have latched on to the only two negative ones. Early adopters... save my coin and take my energy.
Reviews arent facts.. you could get convinced by a negative review if the review is done well. Much like how i see people in these comments that watched this positive review and learned that the game was not for them.
I love how opinions can differ so much. I certainly value your reviews and opinions a lot, but based on what I have seen of the game it is probably not my cup of tea.
@@MortismalGaming I have been a big channel follower for a at least a couple years, and I greatly respect your opinion on things. Oftentimes your view reinforces mine, or your high opinion directs me to titles that I didn't consider at first but end up liking. When you say "they didn't expand on that," is that your way of saying they removed that magic style from gameplay and storyline as a whole? As someone who tries to be careful with my words, I always viewed "not expanding" different from "removing." I understand that forms of magic may not have been something you held dear in the previous titles, but I have very fond memories of the moral quandaries and HP tradeoffs for using blood magic in DA:O. And my strongest memories of DA:O include that quest Broken Circle where blood magic and mages were a central point in the epic assault on the tower.
@@franklinmariduena I mean that blood magic is in the game and still bad but that they didn't do anything new with it, it's just the same old blood magic

I wouldn't take Skill Up seriously
Tbf skillup has stated he doesn't really like DA and barely played ten hours in inquisition, the only one he's played
Slightly better than just having your character talk without input, imo. Picking between "Yes!", "Sure.", "Fine, I guess..." isn't that exciting, but at least it lets you keep holding the reins, which is important.
Ideally we'd get multiple branches, maybe even some conflicting ones, but having some input is still better than having no input.
@ no this is equivalent to telling a child do you want the blue medicine or the red medicine…. There’s only an illusion of choice. I’d rather you just narrate the story without these random interruptions that hold no bearing like I don’t know every other game…
Everyone talking like they're thirty somethings from SoCal doesn't help either.

The meaning in your choices is the outcome not that the option that you don't choose 99% of the time
@@Mcnuke1453 Kinda agree with you there. Then again, it's a video game where all choices are already pre-made so it comes with the territory.

Ya'll need to stop putting so much faith in the reviewers, will end up getting your feelings hurt & being confused..

Mort couldn't tell the difference. That's not his style he just goes over surface level of detail in his reviews.
If something is bad, he kinda avoids talking about it.
If Baldurs Gate 3 is a marker for quality writing then all writing is bad. Definitely bad.
@jmlaw8888 the writing isn't perfect, but it is atleast mature, well acted.
BG3 is a good game, but the writing is not that good, a lot of 15 years old attitude that can't control his surge of hormones. In Veilguard it seems they are targeting a wider audience towards young people. Not saying it's good or bad, just different marketing push.
I am more tempted to install DAO again and mod it
Honestly it doesn't need mods it's just a masterpiece.
@@conorgillespie7832 *if you have nostalgia for it and/or if worldbuilding is your favorite thing.
I got into DA late to the party. I disliked Origins for archaic and mostly servicable systems. It is alright. Worldbuilding is great.
DA2 I kinda sorta thought was okay. Kinda overhated.
DA:I is my favorite so far. It has the same good characters that are common in all DA (and legacy bioware) games. And the streamlined gameplay, while sacrificing complexity, just does it for me.
I am a gameplay over story guy tho. So there is that.
@reksraven inquisition is seriously so good. I think the gameplay is pretty crap but like. I don't care i loved the characters and plot and the scale of the story felt great. Managing the inquisition at skyhold and the great conversations made that game what it is
@@Hedonite I am kinda opposite but really like the game anyway. xD Funny how people value different things but still end up liking the same game.
These reviews are giving me whiplash.
@@falkoo4052 I think you mixed up Pillars of Eternity and Path of Exile. Pillars is a CRPG like baldurs gate 1 and 2. But definitely have the same conclusion from reviews.
@@ryanst95 You're correct. I was thinking about Pillars as a CPRG example while typing, clearly, haha. But that's definitely a big divide. If you want a Combat Sandbox game, it seems to be appealing. It doesn't seem like a Dragon Age game, however.
That’s an interesting take. The UA-cam channels that have always focused on dragon age lore and story are giving it glowing reviews.
Ah man, I was already on the fence w/ the action combat, but hearing that basically none of my prior choices carry over really sealed coffin on this one for me. Keeping up the prior investment I had in the story was the only thing left for me on this one, and with that gone there is really no other reason for me to pick this on up. Guess I will save my money for Kingdom Come 2.
Nobody complained that their choices from prior baldurs Gate games carried didn't over to BG3. What's the difference. Choices from previous dragon age games didn't carry over to inquisition either
@@erikpeters7072 No, in the current game, none of the choices matter, its linear. How are you misunderstanding???
@@erikpeters7072 Literally all the choices from previous DA games carried over to Inquisition.
They specifically built the Keep to do this. What are you on about?
BG3 has nothing to do with BG2. So your comparison is meaningless. There are extremely serious consequences that take place at the end of Inquisition which can't be simply left out.
@@erikpeters7072 I'm pretty sure choices from previous DA games did carry over to DA:Inquisition.
@@erikpeters7072 Actually, BG1 choices do not carry to BG2, and BG3 continues the trend. Not so here, I see.
There was a big shift away from meaningful role play options in DAI. I’m not surprised. DAO and DA2 are not the same as DAI and DAV in terms of tone or themes

@@gamerforlife3946 your stating I lied which is simply false. I discussed referred to the tones and themes of the first two games versus the second two. Inquisition saw a lot of the more adult themes removed or pulled way back. While some remained its clear that they would no longer be a part of the series. DAV seems to be following that trend of watering down those themes to make the audience more comfortable. An example would be the replacement of Blood Magic for Necromancy

while for me personally, this is about as far off from what im looking for in a dragon age game (or an RPG in general) in just about anything, from art style, to itemization, progression, combat, etc.. i give mort credit cause he consistently appears to be one of the few reviewers who do not seem to have already made up their mind on whether to praise or hate on any specific game before even playing through it. and then subsequently "reviewing" it by simply zeroing in on whatever supports or underlines their preconcieved notions.
i am not saying its not fair to factor in ones reactions to whatevers been presented pre-release ofc, but reviewers should still give the released product a fair chance in both directions. the amount of reviewers who essentially just do confirmation bias reviews on games these days is a little disheartening, tbh. we can blame the general culture war environment of the present day but i think thats making it a bit too easy on ourselves there.
for the controversial nature of this title, i guess it is fairly simple:
if you loved DA:O because youre into the more gritty, grounded style of fantasy and/or tactical RPG type of game, then this aint it, chief.
if you think DA:O was clunky and sluggish to play, and there wasnt enough colour and flashyness in the world, the characters, or the skill trees, then this might be right up your alley.

As an old school DAO lover, i think most like me will be greatly disapointed by this game. The style and tupe of direction might appeal to many as well, maybe newer games unfamilar to the series. That being said, i dont get mad with reviewers rating a game and often listen to multiple reviews to get a good idea whether I am going to like it. Thats the point. I dont care personally on the individuals opinion per say, as im trying to form my own. I certainly wont be diving in to this and MAY dip my toe in when the game is under a tenner. But why did take away the fact that they cant take dmg....

Bad writing/dialogue, bad voice acting, lack of choice (you can only play as a good character), only 3 choices carry over. Puzzles are easy, too much hand holding. The combat and art style are up for debate/depends who you ask.
I'm going to spoil the end of DAV for you in the later paragraphs

Well, not every rpg is the same, or as deep, as another.
I appreciate your honesty with this one, its weird how you have to be brave to have your own opinion
Anyone remember a nice little ARPG called Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning? The Veilguard reminds me of that much more than any DA game. And I enjoyed KoA:R a lot. actually
It re-released a while back if you didn’t see that :)
@@kylanrogers2284 also has another DLC as well
To me, that's a big win since I love that game. I wish it'd get a sequel, too.
That was my first impression as well. for good and bad.
I'm looking forward to journey with Emmerich and Lucanis. They had most of my interest. Obviously, i'll be grabbing the Grey Warden and Harding for the next playthrough, if I can.
This guy shredding bosses like they’re nothing, probably because he’s finally using a controller!
I mean I definitely still prefer KBM
Really appreciate the SteamDeck shout out and letting us know. Thanks Mort ✌️
Glad Mort had a good time. I'm more of a DA Origins man.
It seems as there is a lot of, color flashes/ blinks in combat. Way to much for my taste
so your telling me I cant continue my glorious Mage genocide i've been perpetuating for the past 3 games?
aw
Great comment 😂
Agree 💯
You used a controller? I thought you would use K+M no matter how bad it was. I mean you played team ninja games with k+m lol
My keyboard broke I had to order a new one
Stance dancing on Nioh with mkb can be its own kind of fun tho hahahah
At least Nioh 2 is actually pretty damn good on K+M. It's probably the only "souls-like" where I genuinely prefer it over controller.
So wait until game is out and others have reviewed it…already getting too many conflicting reports on this one…
No renegade options? What, did they use up all the meanness with sarcastic Hawke in DA2 or something?
Funny you should mention DA2, because there were no evil options in that game either. No matter what you were Champion of Kirkwall.
People like different things. Weird I know…
I appreciate what you do. I don't know if the game is for me but I am glad you had a great time with it. Love your vids and keep it up.
@@D4C_LoveTrain1this is the take
Reviews arent facts.. you could get convinced by a negative review if the review is done well.
Much like how i see people in these comments that watched this positive review and learned that the game was not for them.
@@Darqion True. I'll simply look at some game streams. Can't go wrong with game streams.
I love how opinions can differ so much. I certainly value your reviews and opinions a lot, but based on what I have seen of the game it is probably not my cup of tea.
How did you like blood magic in this iteration? I always loved the moral question marks and mechanics trade offs involved in previous DA games.
Like I said in the video they didnt really expand on it at all
don't worry, they didn't expand on the moral questions in general
@@MortismalGaming I have been a big channel follower for a at least a couple years, and I greatly respect your opinion on things. Oftentimes your view reinforces mine, or your high opinion directs me to titles that I didn't consider at first but end up liking. When you say "they didn't expand on that," is that your way of saying they removed that magic style from gameplay and storyline as a whole? As someone who tries to be careful with my words, I always viewed "not expanding" different from "removing."
I understand that forms of magic may not have been something you held dear in the previous titles, but I have very fond memories of the moral quandaries and HP tradeoffs for using blood magic in DA:O. And my strongest memories of DA:O include that quest Broken Circle where blood magic and mages were a central point in the epic assault on the tower.
@@franklinmariduena I mean that blood magic is in the game and still bad but that they didn't do anything new with it, it's just the same old blood magic
@@MortismalGaming that's interesting, I heard earlier on that blood magic wasn't in the game because it was a controversial topic. I guess that was misinformation.
I enjoyed your review and with your tastes so similar to mine you've change my "probably skip it" plan to actual excitement for its release. My favourite part of Origins was the changes the class and race choice added to the game and if the factions do nearly as much I'm interested.
Thank you for this video. I am not enraged at your conclusions of this game, because it is , as you clearly state in the video, your personal opinions, and you are fully entitled to them. I am also an adult who can make my own decisions and do not require everyone to agree with me. While this particular game is not my cup of tea, I am glad that you had a good time with it. Have a great day :)
It's almost as if you're saying you're capable of forming your own opinions and don't need a bunch of UA-camrs to do all your thinking for you!
Sadly people like you seem to be in something of a minority, given many of the comments on here.
This is a perfectly fine balance for me, deep enough for my stupid ass.
I might just drop back to Greed Fall until this game gets discounted a lil bit (I am poor haha)
p.s I just watched Skill review but I completely love your 100% ones
its also good to "try" to compare this one with FF16 on the RPG depth mechanics
(tbh I am not in love with to deep RPG mechanics, give me a shiny item, illusion of progress and we are good)
Hey Mort, I'd truly love to have a section each video about all the difficulties occurring doing a 100%. That also could help deciding weather I decide to go for a completion myself or not.
This would be such a nice icing on the cake.
Thanks for rhe review! Crazy how different people have different opinions 🤯 lol keep doing your thing man, i appreciate you
I can't believe you liked it that much. At the same time I respect that you had guts to express that and stand by it no matter what.
You can say many things about me, but caving to pressure is simply not one of them.
@@MortismalGaming my goat!
@@MortismalGamingI respect that, man. Not a fan of the game personally but I respect your opinion and am shocked to see the comment response. Some people just fall for the mob mentality and can’t accept other opinions.
