It was about 90mph and I was mostly flying at around 1000' above the ground. Often lower but sometimes higher when over mountains. Range is about 250mi but I rarely fly that far without stopping.
Peter, they were great. I had no issues and I'm not a radio expert, to say the least. I knew I had to talk to KSMO ground and tell them what I was doing (VFR to KSNA) and they gave me a squawk and departure freq. I changed to that when tower told me and they handed me off to LAX tower. All I did was tell them altitude and that I was doing the Mini route and they cleared me straight through. Then I got handed off to Hawthorne (briefly) and then stayed with SoCal the rest of the way. Coming back it was SoCal all the way from KSNA departure until I reached Van Nuys.
I took off from JW at about 11am and was back in San Jose (South County airport) around 4pm, I think. I stopped at Van Nuys (because it's famous) and I wanted to land there, at Taft-Kern, for lunch and fuel, and at Harris Ranch just for a break.
Thanks I live in Oregon but travel a lot to So Cal. I wanted to know if cross country travel was practical in a gyro. Might be better in an enclosed one since Oregon doesn't always have the best weather.
Nicely Done Paul! Thank you for sharing the fun.
A really amazing flight. What was your average speed/altitude, and what is the range for your gyro?
Thanks!! Great video, by the way

How did ATC treat you, being in a gyro within the Mode C radius? KSMO is my home airport and I am dreaming of getting a gyro myself...

Fantastic... Were they confused when you told them the type of aircraft?
How long did it take you to fly from John Wayne back to San Jose? How many stops did you make and where?
