  • UPDATE: I unfortunately had to mute the video from 1:44-4:07 due to copyrighted music in the Prologue. If you've seen the movie before (I imagine you have!), you know what happens :) I've added subtitles in this section so you can still follow along if you turn on CC.
Today we are watching Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring! The extended editions are long, so this movie will be split into two videos to show even more of the reaction. Enjoy!

And it's such a small thing but you may be the first reactor I've seen that commented on how "heavy" the ring felt when Bilbo dropped it on the floor. It doesn't even bounce. One of the more important things to bear in mind when watching these films is that the Ring is a character in its own right. It is motivated by its drive to return to its maker and master, the Dark Lord Sauron. Since it obviously lacks the ability to move about on its own, it warps and corrupts the thoughts of those with whom it comes into contact - thus, it "ensnared" a new carrier and it "abandoned" both Isildur and Gollum.

Strangely enough, there seems to be this notion among some people that you can’t say that because the latter lifts several scenes right from the animated version… Personally, I see nothing wrong with acknowledging that the Baksheesh film was the first to come up with these new scenes while still seeing the more recent movies as superior

The Balrog look like a tall guy in a winged lion costume? That random giant horned skull in Moria? 🤷‍♂️), but I still think Jackson is a bit more indebted to the film than he'd care to admit. I mean, he definitely took the lead on some of the stuff Bakshi did and just executed them better: the aforementioned 'Black Rider' scene, the 'bed-slashing' scene (particularly of note, since that scene was never in the book), and even ending "Two Towers" in the exact same place the animated film did.

30:47 Elrond is an Elf, and thus immortal. The movie is taking place at the end of the Third Age. Elrond was born at the end of the First Age.
32:20 Bit of a deep dive into lore here. J.R.R.Tolkien, who wrote LORD THE RINGS, met his future wife Edith when they were teenagers, They fell deeply in love. In the grand mythos that he created, the first union between Men and Elves was Beren and Luthien, a grand love story central to pretty much everything. Elrond and Aragorn are both remote descendants of them, many generations later (especially Aragorn). But when Edith Tolkien died, her husband had the name "Luthien" put on her gravestone, A few years later, he died and as per his instructions the name "Beren" was carved upon his.

Also, as a writer, you really aren’t able to expand upon your ideas until you begin writing them. There are other movies with extended versions where I feel there's a clear tradeoff between the extra information you get vs. the slower pacing of the film, but I don't get that at all with LOTR. Yes, the movies end up being 4 hours, and maybe that means not being able to see each of them in one sitting, but other than that I don't think the movie viewing experience suffers at all.

So just some information that could help with understanding. First of all, yes Aragorn was expecting Frodo at the Prancing Pony. In the books, he helps Gandalf look for Gollum. Gandalf also tells him to go to Bree in case Gandalf himself can't make it. I think you're the only person I've seen who caught that Aragorn was there for Frodo.
Second, Gondor has been without a King for centuries and is run by a Steward until the king returns. It is also the closest kingdom to Mordor, so Boromir has spent his life fighting Orcs.
The ring wraiths are afraid of water. Ulmo (the water god) essentially roams the waters of middle-earth. And he hates Sauron. So any time the ring wraiths try to cross water and he happens to be near by, he floods them. So while it won't happen every time because it's not guaranteed he'll be where they are, they are always hesitant to cross. That's hard to get across in the movies so they just made it elf magic.
There is a great rivalry and distrust between elves and dwarves for a variety of reasons.
Elves are immortal. They were the first race created by the god Eru and they lived in Valinor/Undying Lands (heaven) at first. Then some migrated to middle earth. Elves are the only race that can go to the Undying Lands, they can sail there but their souls go there when they die (from being killed or broken heart). It is unknown where the souls of the other races go when they die because it is not Valinor.
There is an exception to immortality but only in Elrond's bloodline. He is called Elrond Halfelven because he has mortal men in his ancestry. So his family have the choice to live immortal or live a mortal life although still significantly longer than man. Elrond chose immortality. His brother chose mortality and the kingdom of numenor (the kingdom no longer exists). All descendants of numenor live a couple hundred years. But Elrond's daughter, Arwen has the choice. But once they choose to live a mortal life, they cannot go to Valinor.
Gandalf and Saruman are two of five wizards sent to middle earth from Valinor. They are Maiar, which are immortal beings that serve the Valar (gods). There's a hierarchy in the Maiar. Sauron was one too, but of a higher level than Gandalf and Saruman. The Valar Sauron served became corrupted and Sauron continued to follow him. Once he fell, Sauron took his place as the dark lord, trying to take over middle-earth. It's when Sauron first rose to power that the wizards were sent to middle-earth to help the free people fight him. They all had different roles. Saruman is meant to be leading the opposition against Sauron while Gandalf's job is more subtle. They have the form of old men so that the race of men will see them as wise and trust them. And also so the kings of men won't be suspicious of a coup from them. But the wizards bodies do not have the weaknesses or drawbacks that an old body has, it's just an appearance. The wizards are the only ones besides the elves that can sail to Valinor or their souls go there when they die. Except Saruman because he is now corrupted, same with Sauron, he can never return to Valinor either.

A sign of great world building is when the lore goes way deeper than is actually needed to tell the story, and that is definitely the case with Tolkien. It has to be the most detailed fiction there is.

I havent seen anyone mention this particular piece of movie set magic. You mentioned that the ring sounds heavy when Bilbo drops it before leaving the shire. Peter Jackson really wanted to emphasize the weight of the ring, so he had his team magnetize that section of the floor for that shot. As a result, instead of bouncing like a normal ring would, the ring just lands with a heavy sounding thud and barely bounces at all.

Fun fact: when Tolkien worked on the Lotr, his editor corrected him several times on the plural of Dwarf, officially it spelt: "dwarfs".
However J.R.R. (as pretty much everyone knows, he was a linguist) felt firmly against that way and insisted on it being kept "dwarves".
One time when he was corrected on the word, with the reasoning being: the closest thing in the Oxford English Dictionary to dwarf is dwarfs. To which Tolkien angrily wrote back: "I WROTE the O.E.D.!". As it got ppopular, masses added dwarves to their lexicon.
He was wrong! Although he was so certain, he later admitted it was technically incorrect. fun.

Here's a little about the author, J.R.R. Tolkien. He was not a writer by profession and only wrote a handful of stories during his life. He was a combat veteran of WWI, a devout Catholic, a Rawlinson and Bosworth Professor of Anglo-Saxon and a Fellow of Pembroke College, both at the University of Oxford. He was also a Merton Professor of English Language and Literature and Fellow of Merton College. Tolkien was also a close friend of C. S. Lewis, the author of the "The Chronicles of Narnia" series. His novels "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings" series are somewhat of an autobiography, when you study his life you will find many parallels with his stories. His works are the basis of almost all modern fantasy, from Dungeons & Dragons to Game of Thrones. Without Tolkien, we would not have the high fantasy we all know and love.

It was a great reaction, by the way - it looks like you're really into the film and characters

Aragorn is 87 years old in these movies and lives to be 210 after 122 years as King. Let that sink in.

I never tire of watching people experience The Lord of the Rings for the first time. Was able to share these films with my daughter last month .. and I think it's time to watch them again 😆
