There is something quintessentially English seeing ivy covered stone walls but it is so destructive! That looked like really hard work, Patrick.
Those are lovey steps too. Worth restoring, in my opinion. The fig tree is a bonus! In honour of Lord Figaro!
Always love brocante shopping with you two! 💕

Good for you tackling the ivy! It is pernicious. I like seeing these other areas of your chateau. The stairs, rounded wall and doors offer a lovely architectural vignette. I'm sure there are many other such scenes on your property. I enjoy seeing these picturesque little corners. And more figs - yum! Our family home in Pennsylvania was made of brick but the ivy grew so much that you couldn’t tell! It had lots of critters living in it too. Many birds nests. I thought it was beautiful. When my mother and brothers took it all down I was so upset! The house looked bare. But they had to have the entire houses pointed again. Love seeing little Figaro looking some comfy with you both. They easily get into your hearts❤❤️❤️

Love the kitten, as I said to a person below, the kitten and the dogs would already have the scent of each other. That is a bonus before they meet. They all have a powerful sense of smell. I use to put my dogs in one room and new cats or kittens on the other side of the door to get use to a lot before direct interactions, it could make it easier. 😘😘

If you are able to put copper screws or nails into the roots it should discourage the regrowth of the ivy. it should shrivel in about a year. icluding what is inside the wall. it take several years for tree roots, but it does work. good luck

Guys, the headboards look great. I love the fabric.
I'm happy to hear that your little kitten is progressing nicely. 👍
I hesitate to mention an obvious solution to your ivy problem, systemic herbicide. If you use responsibly, following the instructions, including wearing proper personal protection, there shouldn't be an issue of contamination. Unfortunately, here in Texas, it's actually still legal to sell ivy. It's definitely a non-native invasive species.
We also have some extremely aggressive vines with nasty thorns that spread in every direction under the ground. God has determined that if we insist on living in Texas, we're going to have to fight Nature to do so. Tornadoes, poisonous spiders, snakes and scorpions, alligators, bobcats, wolves, not to mention the heat, clearly it's a conspiracy of Nature to drive us out.
Thanks for bringing us along to the brocante. That's always fun.
    ❤ from TX!

Ivt, ivy, ivy. Our current fixer upper was covered in Ivy when we bought it. You could barely see the house. It took multiple weekends bribing friends with beer and food to tame it. In the end we had one big root that refused to die. My husband read that if you drive copper nails into the root (or in this case the stem), it will kill it. It worked for us, so you might want to try it. You eventually will need to take some stones out to find out where it is getting it's nourishment from...but you know that already! You have my sympathies with the heat. It was 102 this afternoon when I left work.

I e done my own fight with Ivy!! I feel your pain!! The key is to kill the root, the biggest trunk you can find, I tried everything and ended off with an industrial strength ivy killer (especially for killing off ivy) and once you get it down and find the root you can also put diesel all over the roots… being careful where it goes and this also stopped mine re growing! Failing that a flame thrower will do it 🤣🤣🤣🙈🙈🙈 that market 😍😍 it will be a shock to fígaros system when he meets the dogs 😂 he’s gorgeous 😍😍😍❤

Oh my that ivy! Wish I had a magic solution- well actually any solution, but I know nothing about getting rid of ivy! I know you’ll come up with an idea. I’m so glad you have a cat now. Living in any old building requires one - or two! I know all the years I lived in our old house, our three cats made sure we never once saw a mouse. In fact they ruled! Dogs only went where the cats allowed them to go, so I wouldn’t be surprised if Figaro becomes numero uno before too long. Those headboards are really lovely. The fabric is in such good condition. I don’t know how you manage to do all that work in the heat. Being Scottish, I’ve never acclimated to the Toronto humid summers. I think I hibernate more in the summer than I do in the winter months! Only three ingredients are needed for an environmentally safe product that can be applied to English Ivy to eliminate it: Vinegar, Dish Soap, and Salt. For one batch of weed killer, you will need a gallon container of white vinegar, ¼ cup of dish soap, and two cups of Epsom or regular salt.
I hope this helps. You're both doing a phenomenal job much love from 🇨🇦❤️

    • @yolandagofigure
      @yolandagofigure 3 місяці тому +1

@@JourneytotheChateau yes.. I saw that.. but I wonder if you can dilute it?.. I found this as well.
      Salt Solution Method
If you don't have any vinegar, you can create a salt solution to kill poison ivy. Mix one cup of salt with a tablespoon of dish soap and a gallon of water. Pour the salt solution into a spray bottle and spray it on poison ivy leaves and stems.
A thick tarp or heavy plastic sheeting can kill English ivy by blocking sunlight and depleting the energy stored in the roots. The main drawback to this method is that it's slow: it can take two years to fully wipe out the ivy's extensive root system.
Lemon juice does indeed kill ivy roots, but it will also kill surrounding plants if you're not careful.

get a saline solution IV drip bag, add several CC of Round Up and put the IV needle into the major (size) trunk of the Ivy ,wait one week for the IV bag to empty. The ivy will die and you have not contaminated the area. This is a systemic and will go to every point of the roots because of the saline in the IV drip quickly. I have a large number of trees with Ivy, grape vine and poison ivy on them for 30 years. This works with the least amount of environmental impact and effort. Good Luck my sympathy is with you, I have been through this.

Ivy is the bane of any gardener's existence. I feel for you, Patrick and Stuart. Great find in that bedframe, guys. Figue is certainly looking healthy and handsome!

I can sympathize with you. The torrential rain, then extreme heat is the perfect growth mechanism, creating giant plants, not to mention good old ivy which roots itself in absolutely anything. I'm sorry your gorgeous walls and steps are being choked out. I hope you find just the right solution to rot it out with any further damage. Thank you for taking us along to that lovely brocante at the river. Love those headboards! Figaro is an absolute doll!

Figaro is so sweet and looks healthy and happy. I’ve had long exhausting battles with ivy through the years and sometimes I thought about using a stick of dynamite but common sense got the better of me, so I didn’t go that route. Half my house blasted away was not the way to go. Brute force and the assistance of two strong sons removed the ivy. It’s a shame because ivy on stone walls looks pretty, but as you said, it grows into the stone. Whenever you go to a brocante I see many items I would buy and you always seem to find the jewel amongst everything else. Love the headboard!! Hugs to you both! ❤

Ivy - destroying the walls and kind of holding them together at the same time, that's a dilemma! I love being dragged to the Brocantes. Thank you!

Hello there..loved this segment.... just wondering, back in the day when (who now has his own channel) was the gardener at Chateau Diaries he used something that looked like a tiny flamethrower, to burn all the weeds and sticky things. Sinceyour ball of roots are in the wall and not near any wood which could catch fire, perhaps that would be an easy way to take care of that root just keep burning it, until it gives up! Just a thought. Take care and hugs to all your quadrupeds from Dusty my pug

At the brocante, I loved those marble clock sets, the white frame with the gentleman's portrait, the tool set and that wooden chair made from some snarled part of a big tree. I would definitely have spent too much money.

Good luck with the ivy! Ha, you said you needed the big loppers… and you didn’t mean simply large. 😁♥️
I know what you mean about things growing so much now. Oh my gosh, with all the rain (we’ve had similar here), things are seriously growing so fast and HUGE! Hydrangea blooms as big as my head! And saplings are seriously taking off. (Other things are turning into mildewed mush. 😢) Great that you can use the fig elsewhere. I’m giving away pagoda dogwoods right and left, but the ash saplings - 5 feet (about 1.6 meters) in one year is a bit extreme!!!
Great bed ends, and gorgeous fabric.
Aww… Figaro is a total dear! ♥️♥️♥️ I’m so glad he’s happy to play with you, etc.

Thank you so much for the update on that precious kitty, Figaro, Patrick & Stuart! He is so handsome, just like his two dad's & I can't wait to observe as he grows & changes & comes into his own, as you said Patrick!
The headboards are gorgeous & perfect for the chateau. At 1st I thought I was looking at lace, but then Stuart spoke of the fabric, which is stunning! You both find such wonderful items at the Brocantes. Blessings & pray your weather cools down really soon!! 🇺🇸

Use copper nails. I recommended it to Terry &Ashe when the wanted to clear the walled garden. They responded a few month later that it worked. I’ve used them on wisteria vines. I think the were a dollar a piece online.

Hi sweeties. The rute of Ivy is difficult to get rid of.
But it's so damaging for "old" walls. I hope you can kill the beast😛 Now that you have removed the weeds in the corner, you can see it's much larger than i thought. It would be perfect for a little table and chairs in the shade. You could see how a stretch the brocante was. It's not funny in the hot sun and no shade. Love the headboards. The blue is beautiful. Figaro is so cute. Have a great weekend. Hugs and kisses also for the furries and Figaro. 😘🥰🐕🐈

I’ve just got in from a super evening out at a local country pub with one of my sons and my lovely daughter in law. I’m trying to work out where you have to go down steps at colombe to get rid of the ivy. Of course this might have something to do with the fact that we got there first and I ordered a nice bottle of white wine only to find out that the other three fancied lager. I drank the whole bottle!!

Don't worry about looking too eccentric, but I recommend that you bring a couple of parasols on your next brocante outing. It could become your signature look, recognizable up and down the Berry.
