This was an awesome concert. A friend's sister drove me up (since I didn't have a license yet), and all the bands were incredible. I'm very tall, so I got up to the wall separating the crowd from the bands and was tall enough to see over. The B-52s, Pretenders, and Talking Heads were the best acts, but it was all amazing. Best concert I've ever been to, and I was at Live Aid later as well.
40 years ago today. I was barely 16, my brother was only 14, and our parents actually allowed us to go. Went w/ 3 other people, drove from WNY, and I didn't even have a ticket. Long story, but I had ordered my ticket through the mail, and it never arrived. I was devastated, but said f*ck it, I'm going anyway. So off I went with my money order receipt (lol)! Guy at gate took pity on me and let me in. It really was a heatwave; hotter than hell that day. We spent the night in sleeping bags and were awoken in the morning by authorities yelling at people with bullhorns to get out! Best part is my money order was returned to me about 2 weeks later, so I got in free! I still have the t-shirt I bought too. Amazing line-up! Thanks for posting this!
Great memories, and so many good bands. Glad I was part of history. Had a great time partying. Fav was Teenage Head, “blow my jets, I am a teenage header”.
They were great! I laughed, hearing Frankie Venom say, "It's nice to get a little of success after 4 years of playing the *Knob Hill,* the *Rondun,* and those dumps." Back then, I sang in the *Kovergirlz,* an all-girl rock/metal band, and we also played those dumps, including the *West Hill House* (the "Westie") in southeast Scarborough. Everyone called the Rondun "the Run-down."
@@peterkeogh1325 - L7 are great! There's no chance in hell we'd reform. Too much bad blood and I'm not in touch with any of them, including the bassist, who was my best friend since public school, but screwed me out of money on our last tour.
@@wholeshebang1 I guess that’s rock n’ roll! Too bad things ended bad, would have been cool to see your band. Perhaps on UA-cam? Speaking on L7 they are coming to Toronto this October. I am definitely going.
I was 15 years old and my parents let me drive up with two of my band mates (maybe 18 years old) from Boston in a '69 Comet w/ a cooler filled with (soggy) bologna sandwiches, a tank of gas and $50 between us. The starter broke down en route in upstate NY and the mechanic said "just don't shut the car off". Elvis was AMAZING, NOBODY got the heads (many, incl. this naive punk, even booed them!), and the Pretenders rocked. Didn't sleep for days & resorted to stealing food to eat. Good times!
I was at this incredible event and the band that stole the show that day was none other than the Talking Heads. I dropped acid for the very first time in my life during their set and was immediately transported to a magical dimension... It was an absolutely astonishing and colourful adventure!
We drove from Upstate NY and were so bummed out when we got there and found out the Clash didn't make it through customs(if that was true). But was an incredible show with original Pretenders line up kicking ass and Heads, Elvis C and many more. All for like $20. Today that would be like $500. Now it's time to look for myself and my friends...
I was there as well, what a great concert, we drove from Dayton OH to be there. $20 for all those acts today, forget that LOL , a concert I will not forget,
The 4 of us locals drove from Toronto. Got there around 10 am and left during Elvis Costello. It was hotter than hell, "Heat Wave" was exactly right. The B52's were great, but the best was Talking Heads. They started around dusk and finished at dark, we moved up as close as we could, the whole stage was pulsing. As we left the parking area, we could hear The Kings playing "Switching To Glide". Got home around 4 am, exhausted.
I remember me and friends driving down from Niagara Falls the night before and partying all night. This was one heck of a line up. Was one of the highlights growing up.
There's probably a 1971 Pontiac Catalina or Grand Safari Wagon at 1:17. I read "Pontiac" on the tailgate and the tailgate has louvres, a 1971 only feature. Station Wagons are a part-time hobby for me.
Worked backstage at the entrance to the artist's compound as part of K.I.D. security. Chrissie Hynde, Bob Ezrin(Pink Floyd, Kiss, Alice Cooper. etc.) producer, John Martin(The New Music) and Bob Segarini passed through my gate during my shift.
Yes, I was there. For those who were also there, -do you remember how long it took them to get water for us? Holy crap! Heatwave for sure and dying of thirst! LOL!
That show was a blast! My friends and I filled a watermelon with a 26-er of vodka the night before and injected oranges with it, too, so we weren't thirsty. 🍉💦🍾
I was there too! Me with future husband & friends drove all the way from Windsor, ON thru the night, haha! What a trip that was! Very hot, lots of fun! Decided to go at the last minute, almost didn't go, so glad I did! :)
Is that Kate from the B-52s saying "I thought they would all be on acid"? Ha Ha well all of my crew were... maybe I was peaking during the Talking Heads, but I thought they were awesome. 1st time with the expanded Remain In Light lineup? Pretty cool seeing Rockpile too.
It was biblical! There were millions!! Maybe the fields were plowed over just before, leaving them no where to go? Just a thought, don't know why there were so many?
William Cate ....saw them 2x in 81...great shows....in Philly at Tower and NJ at Cap......great, tight line up at the time. Why she let Farndon go, I could never understand. You dont abandon a friend when they are down. She was one tough lady...accomplished a hell of a lot in the first five years of their playing together. Rip...PGF N JHS.😚😎🤗
Where is the clip with Pretenders...Pete tells about that one show, he wanted to come out dressed as Alice Cooper and say, Hi, I am Alice Cooper, as a joke...but didnt. Gives a greatcute smile n smirk with the comment on interview. Dont remember who had that clip up on youtube...this was 5,6 years ago. Then it was gone. Hmmmmm.....?????😑😐😆
I didint, i flew back from Alta,,,,,Talking Heads blew everyone away,, elvis was boring as hell,, only caught half of pretenders,,,i was at the fence or the stage,,when the Heads came on,,after pretenders, rockpile, and b52's,,i still try to remember the order,,but 2 much leb that was going around,,,,,,i do believe Blondie and Clash were to headline,,,any 1 know if there is more video of this?
We got there late after our car broke down. Got there for The KIngs, Talking Heads, The Pretenders and Elvis Costello

Wicked! I just saw myself at the 1:14 mark, wearing my checkered glasses!
Now I wish you had Alice out that day!
Cool! I was there, too.

Without a Doubt. Best weekend of my 'Youth Youth Youth'.
Amazing it was. Some friends and I drove up from Newport R.I. Still have the Heatwave poster!
Was there and when Chrissie was on stage we were fighting for the one pair of binoculars. Just had to see her.
I was right at the front and got pics to prove it.
I was there 😊. Man we had fun
I was there! And yes, it was amazing!

+Alice Repooc This was true. I saw no fights at all. We deduced that everyone was on acid! Lol!
I remember The Kings closed the festival after Elvis as everybody tried to leave, playing This Beat Goes On/Switchin' To Glide
SO many grasshoppers, it was like a locust invasion!
