      I'm curious about your opinion of house rules?
      For example in the past me and a good acquaintance played D&D with a house rule that allowed characters to be created from other Fantasy series and lore as long as there was multiple iterations of the lore for the race that are relatively consistent. So I wonder about your opinion in regards to that.

    What I, as a brand new dm who is playing with brand new players, have liked about this set so far is the explanations for everything. When my nieces wanted to try the game, I volunteered to DM for them. I found a silly one-shot adventure online and, since I’ve watched a lot of videos of people playing online and some stuff from you and others, I thought I’d be ready to help everyone. I was SOOOO wrong!
    All of us had questions while creating and playing their characters and running the game that I had no idea about and couldn’t find quick answers to online. One question literally took me 2 hours of searching online before I could find the answer!
    Luckily, everyone still had a great time and decided to try out the new starter set. Reading through it and watching the included videos have been so helpful! They’ve answered almost every question that came up in our first game, and showed me some things I should’ve done to better prepare for the game. I’m excited to try to run it this weekend.

      One tip what I did was just to make a ruling the players agreed is fair, and just continue. Then I'd search the actual rules and answer it in the next session's pre-game recap.

  • @Shelfside
    @Shelfside Рік тому +131

    It’s great that this is way more tailored towards the newest of new players! I always felt that the essentials kit was almost more like a quick start for groups that already have some experience, especially because like you said there’s not much DM tips. On top of that, essentials kit has really tough encounters early on that probably require the DM to do some numbers tweaking to not demolish the party lol

    • @BobWorldBuilder
      @BobWorldBuilder  Рік тому +8

      Totally! I think the EK, and the original Starter Set especially, were better suited for people who had some familiarity with a previous edition or as a player, but this new one sets of brand new DMs quite well

    • @daltigoth3970
      @daltigoth3970 Рік тому +4

      The one thing the essentials kit adventure did that most other adventures don't do is that most of the encounters are written to be scalable (e.g. "1 goblin plus 1 additional goblin for every 2 characters in the party, not counting sidekicks").
      The few that are not written that way are brutal if the DM plays the monsters optimally, particularly the Talos acolytes if they start hurling lightning bolts at a party of level 3 characters and the wererats if the party doesn't have much in the way of magic at their disposal.

  • @MackeyD3
    @MackeyD3 Рік тому +80

    I think the value for money in the essentials kit is what makes it the best. More dice, more rules, poster maps, lots of handouts for players, and it comes with extra content on dnd beyond.

    Sometimes less is more. It's not always about the quantity of dice, or the length of the adventure, or whether you get a DM screen. It's about introducing people to a game with textbooks of rules in an approachable way.

    Looks like a good box set for beginners. I initially was not going to pick it up as the only reason I would have is because I thought the 80's characters were in it. But, you've changed my mind. I can see using this. Heck, my main one shot character, Larry the Lounge Wizard started in Phandelver as a sheet from the starter set and now he's a level 8 conjuration machine. Due to some minor incidents involving raising some corpses, Larry is no longer 'good'. But he still means well, dammit!

    Looking at the investigation being a +0 and directly above it the intimidation being a +3 without proficiency for the rogue I think they probably just misprinted it.

      Looking at the character sheet, the rogue actually has a charisma of 16, so that explains the +3 intimidation. It's weird though, if there's a typo here, are there typos anywhere else?

    So these are great. My girlfriend is showing interest in DnD and I’m not super familiar with it, but my Target has this on sale plus a bogo half off deal where I can get this plus the essentials kit for like $25.
    Thanks for putting out these videos for people like us who have no idea what we’re doing.

    Great video as always. Just a note about the editing, the glitch transitions you used (0:43, 8:07 and 8:37) were a bit confusing on the eyes, both because there isn't really a tech theme to this channel nor a kind of sound effect to give an audio cue for the transition to make sense. Still, very informative and enlightening video on the new starter set with well-reasoned opinions.

    My son (14) wanted to become a DM. He used this starter set as a great way to set him up for success. And it means I have a game where I am a player instead of DM. He's since expanded after we played through this to create his own world and adventures. Pretty great get-go set for a beginner.

    I agree 100%... Kinda wish they had fun customized dice and the cartoon character made an an appearance maybe as helpful hint people or though a fun mini-story at the beginning of each chapter in the adventure as a summery of it.

    I'm happy to get a variety of options (as well as more boxed sets), but I'm not convinced that the videos, which seem to be the main benefit of this box over the others, is really all that impressive considering the shear breadth of content out there already, most of it really helpful. The vast majority of the people who would buy into this already know where to look on UA-cam too. I'm more interested in learning about the adventure itself because so far the previous two are way more appealing. The Essentials Kit for the amount of content for price and the original Starter Kit for the iconic Adventure.

    Well I can't talk for all the people, but I'm definitely watching your reviews and absolutely not the DnD official channel ones
    I personally find the videos on the Dungeons and dragons official channel to be just not descriptive of the things you want to know about at all. Instead they talk for minutes and minutes about just some obscure lore and real world references and inspiration... probably not the juice you clicked on the video for.
    On the other hand, your videos, Bob, are just beautifully edited, even in their simple form. Plus you alway manage to cover both good and bad sides of things which i believe to be yet another demonstration of love and care for this channel, for your fans as well for new people who are just approaching dnd.
    Great video as always

    Me and my friends been playing Dungeon World for years, though we've added a bunch of homebrew rules so it's hard to tell it's DW anymore. For our next campaign we wanted to do a hybrid of 5e and Homebrew and this seems like a solid way to learn the 5e side of things.
