I worked with VHS and Beta for many years and I never thought Hi-Fi depth recording was a good idea. Great for the lab, probably not that good for domestic use. It took only a slightly worn head or an incorrect back-tension for the track to fail, at which point the sound would revert to the standard low-fi linear track. In later years, many VHS Hi-Fi tapes developed terrible dropouts and the sound would be constantly switching between the two modes. So in my opinion the depth recording hifi system was a 'bridge too far' for the technology of the time.
