I can't believe you were able to do this successfully under water! Having years of experience in a mechanical shop, I don't think I would have even thought it possible. I would have had the boat hauled out and done it on land, at great expense and loss of time (of which I understand you have plenty right now). Oh, to be young and unafraid to attempt the impossible! Great job you two, and thanks for the video story!

I’m so impressed in every way. Most would deminimize the tiller issue and ignore the need for a fix. Your thought process and logic evaluates every possibility in the root cause, approach, and possible outcomes. Together your precise communication, both most familiar with a different language, and yet each perceptive of the need for clarity, find ways to reaffirm and codify precise communication. Patience and respect guide each step. Finally your combined sense of logic and trust allow you to gracefully achieve your goal. I wish the rest of the human race could emulate your behavior and the world could come together as one loving, trusting, and cooperative body. Thanks for the best video I have seen in years

Pro tip regarding small things outside the boat:
Suspend a *white* bucket down in the water, wherein you can drop all those tiny things. Hoist thereafter slowly and carefully the bucket up on the deck.

I am rarely impressed, less often with young guys being a grumpy old bastard,, but I was smart and resourceful when I solved these problems at sea when we did our 20,000 miles, and you are very impressive Aladino. A young me. Good detective skills and a very competent cruising sailor. Well done. Love your work.

This was REALLY impressive! There was SO MUCH that could have gone wrong. The execution was flawless, how the F did you manage to film as well? I’ve removed my rudder twice - but on land - so I am full of admiration. But your experience has provided me with yet more confirmation that my transom hung rudder is a better solution. 😉

Thank you! This was no easy task by all means. Working under water with just holding your breath and not loosing any tool not to mention the key. But what few realize is the impossibility of using the usually very helpful support of a beautiful wide repertoire of Swiss swear words under water!🤪 little did we know about your impressive talents in illustrating this venture, well done Aladino! A true Superman how you managed this indeed and the margaritas are well deserved. Another great video from our beloved magic carpet team!

Your freehand drawings of the router and your current model of the boat in the rotor were very nicely made I cannot believe you did those freehand, one thing I did notice you apply no lubrication to the shaft? One other thing I think I would’ve cheated And bothered the keyway in with superglue with my luck the keyway would’ve fell out and will become catfish food, you did a wonderful job doing all that underwater holding your breath

To be honest when you start talking about it I was immediately thinking about the key as this happen often in this constructions. When I was on board (bigger vessels then yours) we always did carry a second key in case the mounted one failed. Anyway, respect the way you handled it single handed! Good luck with the rest of the trip it doesn't happen again. My advice take the exact measurements and ASAP make a spare!

Aledino, you are so brave! Anyone who can successfully handle small essential parts (key, nut, washer,pi) and small tools underwater with gloves, in murky water with a muddy bottom and without a loose piece of window screen in a frame hung below them it is my hero! I suspect your key changed shape gradually by being peened as a result of many years of motion created by waves and prop wash. This exercise was possible because you knew your boat's parts intimately and it is a smallish boat. Congratulations on your troubleshooting and successful underwater procedure.

  • @TR4zest

The big clue for me was that you managed to release the key by wiggling the shaft. I have never installed a key in a rudder, but have installed keys, in an automotive sense several times for pulley, flywheel etc. The fit is what is called an 'interference fit' and I have installed them with light taps with a hammer. I am not sure I would sand the key you have. The 0.1mm overage is for the interference. I love your CAD expertise (cardboard aided design). I wonder if you could use a flexible tube (like a 4cm water pump hose) as a breathing tube while you worked on the keel, rudder/propeller. Great resourcefulness from you both. Well done.

Aladino explains it very well with his drawings and cardboard cutout to show the process, he also explains it quite well on the floating dock showing all the parts. Problems are always the mother of inventions, that is a small hole compared to the size of the board holding the mast. It will be fine. Most keys that I have used have one side larger than the other, slightly tapered. We have used a drop of silicone and let it set to hold the keyway in place while fitting shafts so that it doesn't move. Well done and you saved heaps by not having to cut the rudder open and reweld the tube or even slip the boat to do all of the work you did while at the floating dock. Another great video Thanks.

One thing that I have seen on one rudder is a hole through the rudder blade so that you can put a rope through to do what you have done more easily at sea, and or to use a rope as an emergency drive for the rudder with a rope up each side. My naval architect friend in Aus has an eye on each side of his steel rudder for those purposes. Great that your fix worked so well.
