I was once considering setting up my own group exhibition in a location not too far from a major art-fair in my hometown during the very same period of that major art-fair. My thought was that due to that event, the city would be overcrowded with art collectors from all over the world. Some might pass to take a look at my exhibition as well. You are mentioning in the clip, that it might be wise not to compete with big events. You think my thought was wrong?
Velártez Gallery 👋 Parallel art fairs has become a culture, I think there is nothing wrong with taking an opportunity. But most of parallel art fairs are simple there to eat the bread crumbles of the main fair. In Spain we have ARCO (main event) and two smaller fairs Art Madrid, Just Madrid. The parallel fairs will never win this fight. It’s better to make a different thing, fight a different battle. There is a fair called Hybrid art fair, held in hotel rooms on hotel beds. It’s a different kind of fair with its own identity. I think it’s better!
