While playing (which he thrashed my arse) he filled me with his homemade Black rice wine....damn I was sick afterwards. It was a really great memory of the trip overall. Cheers mate.

Long cheng looks like a simple village now, but at the end of the 60's, it was the largest military base, second largest city in laos and had the busiest airfield in the world for a short period

I was there in 1970 in elementary school 2nd grader. Then the pathej Lao Vietkong soldiers fired guns, rockets toward that airport. They burned 1 T28 fighter plane.
Glad you made the trip to Long Tieng. It's intiged me since reading The Ravens back in 2000 and being in Vientiane then yet unable to make the trip due to it being a restricted zone. I'm retiring to Thailand next year's and will be coming up to Laos with Long Tieng at the top of the list for a visit.

I spent 3 years in South Korea in the early 70's and much of what I'm seeing in this video reminds me of those days. The Korean landscape back then wasn't as lush though. Are mosquitoes a problem there?

Gorgeous country, reminds me of the Java highlands. How big do their shoes go? I wear a size 11 US and can't find shoes that fit me in much of SE Asia.
Not everyone would live the life you live but then again they would not understand , i for one can acclimate to that style of living and enjoy happiness in peace.

I've been wondering what the camping/diy travel situation is in Laos. Like, can you just plonk your caravan at the local showgrounds or lions Park like you can here in Oz? Not that id be equipped language or culture wise to just wander around by myself.
You're pretty good to pull up just about anywhere here and camp the night.. You'd be going to find a lions club or showground though, let alone a caravan. I've never seen one here. Think I've only ever seen one campervan... Guesthouses are that cheap I don't think tourists bother with that kind of travel. A nicely decked out camper would be very cool here though with some of the spectacular places you'd be able to pull up at 👌

Buying duplicate pairs of shoes is something I never would have done when I was younger. I would have always assumed that the next pair of shoes and the novelty of them would make them better than any old ones. When I got older I realized the law of averages exists and to always double down on exceptional things.
If I find clothes or shoes I like and they are on sale, I buy a couple of them. I have a box of clothes and shoes from living in Philippines, Japan and local from over 20 years ago, and I just haven't needed to break them out yet. :0)
