i had a manual rx-8 and the most fun thing was being able to rev it up to 8-9k rpms. plus the fact that the car would thrive on 5-6k rpm shifts was super intriguing. love to see that a rotary has come to the channel! i’ve also heard that you should hold the rpms at 3k for about 7 seconds and then turn off the ignition while it’s revving to properly turn it off so the engine is empty of any fluids while leaving it sitting.
Do a compression test on that engine Also let it warm up before you shut it off or you will flood it again Edit Also if the car has trouble starting once it's warmed up that's a sign that it's got bad compression
Yes cranking it while holding the gas is what you want to do to deflood it. I own an 09 and I've been through a few problems. I can answer some basic questions if you have them. You don't have to disconnect the fuel pump just hold the pedal down for future reference and you want to deflood it until you get a constant sound.
Never just fill the oil to just halfway on the dipstick with a rotary. You ALWAYS keep it full. The oil in the twin oil coolers is a major component of the engine cooling . Less oil, less cooling. FYI, I have owned seven rotaries and driven over a million rotary miles on track and street. RX3, two RX4, all three generations of RX-7 (all turboed and one race built by Racing Beat that did 185mph on the banking at Pocono), and a 2008 40th Anniversary Edition RX-8 still going strong with some performance and cooling mods. Cheers
I've had my rx8 for almost 10 years has approximately 110k and has been very reliable besides regular oil change I've only had to replace a bad solenoid that costed $25
I bought a gen2 car that wouldn’t run...ignition system had been neglected. New plugs, wires, and coils...and it fired right up. Good choice on the Idemitsu! Motorcycle size engine....V8 fuel economy...recipe for fun. The deflood procedure is crazy....but it works. Gotta have a good battery and good ignition.
I so love the Rx8, test drove one financially ready to pay for it, then life changes get in the way, ended up with a Mercedes Vito fully loaded disability vehicle, all electric opening doors and automatic rear ramp.
Awesome channel guys I got my first RX-8 earlier this year and I absolutely Love it!! It's an awesome and fun car to drive, but definitely a learning curve involved in taking care of that rotary. Really looking forward to the next video!!!
I have the same problem with my car, I’ve replaced almost every sensor under that hood and was about to give up and part it out, but I’m gonna try this
Hi, to de flood don't unplug anything, push the clutch and accelerator pedals all the way down crank over for 10 secs wait 30 secs do it again then on the third time slowly lift on the accelerator pedal, if it trys to start after 10 15 secs try and start it normaly . Pushing down both pedals cuts the fuel
A rotary with a straight piped exhaust or a unrestricting one is great for the engine bc it lets it breath and rotaries need it more than piston engines.
I had to re-watch this when i got home. You guys are amazing at what you do! I know the camera doesn't show all the stress that comes along with having a channel, but you guys are killing it, and have been for quite some time! Keep being awesome guys!
Don't miss oil changes, don't ignore any problems/engine lights, premix, and these motors can last a good amount of time. Albeit less than pistons, but that's the price you pay for a 1.3L engine with 232 hp with no turbos (178 hp/L)
Spark plugs were probably so fouled if the spark was just going around the inside of the plug if you can get him running they will eventually clean themselves if it's hard to start again get some plugs
RX8s are vastly underappreciated and real jems. I bought mine for $2500 "non-running," just changed coil packs and drove it away. The RX8 is a great GT car. It is the precursor chassis to the NC Miata. The suspension is soft and interior remarkably quiet, plus the car actually seats 4 real adults. It's just an awesome cruiser. The only reason why it's not actual expensive to buy is because everyone loves to hate the Renesis...which I don't really get. It's a better performing engine than the praised S2000 engine, seriously. It's smoother, has more low and midrange punch, is lower inertia and rev happy, and revs higher. Seriously, drive a S2000 and RX8 back to back and you'll like the Renesis better. Sure, rebuild it every 75k to 100k miles, not a big deal. Change plugs and coils every 30k miles, not a big deal. That's it. The flooding thing is a fallacy. But the biggest problem is starting rpm which is stupid low. The 04 and 05 had a reallys slow starter which caused all the flooding and hot start crap. They put faster starters in to improve this, but even the best starter of the newer generation is still quite slow for a very low inertia engine. You really want to get the best battery you can and for anyone with older models, you need to upgrade the starter to the best one, a 14 tooth, 2kW one. I've generally gotten Odyssey batteries. You're getting some ok cranking at times, but you fiddling around with all the fuel pump and throttle crap is pointless. For an old, non-running car, it will take some time to oil things and get the seals to actually work and get compression. In terms of actual starting, buy a good battery. Your car is new enough to have the good starter, so no issues there, but you want a battery with solid cranking amps and good voltage. Frankly, these cars just need faster starters, but Mazda nor any aftermarket manufacturer has made one which sucks. You probably want to still replace the coils and plugs, doesn't matter if they need a change, you want to know the 0 mile point for them so you know the 30k change point. Pre-mixing isn't really needed. Yeah, you can do it to help a little, but the main reason for it was on earlier S1 models that had fewer oil injectors. The early models would wear the center of the housing, and the S2 got two more oil injectors surprisingly at the center of the housing. This is what you have. I do suggest running thicker oil. OEM was 30 weight. Mazda dealerships would also toss 20 weight in these things (well in everything) in more recent years. Both were not good for an engine that specifically needs sealing of seals and good shear strength. Run the thickest oil you can. Eneos has a 0w50 if you ever plan to run this in cold climates. Amsoil has their Signature Series that offers outstanding wear protection. Otherwise, there's plenty of 5w50, 10w50, or 10w60 options available. The thicker oil will protect the metal and provide better compression. I seriously think this is why these things wore out so fast, just thin oil. Also for the oil change, the car holds 7 quarts of oil, but most of it is stuck in the coolers, so you really only change half every oil change. There is a drain plug on the left oil cooler that you can use to drain more. I don't think anybody does this. Most don't really care and just changes oil every 3k miles. It doesn't matter a lot because you also consume 1 quart every 1000 miles too, so the oil is pretty fresh all the time. You're mostly swapping the filter and removing contaminants. Oil is the one spendy part on these cars. You can go cheap if you want or you can be plopping in $15 every thousand miles and $60 every 3000 miles just on oil. Also don't worry about the oil consumption thing. No, you don't have to carry a quart of oil everywhere you go. The car has an oil pressure gauge. The car has a low oil light (this isn't loss of pressure, just low volume). The oil light comes on a 1 quart low, aka 6 of 7 quarts in the engine still, and this coincides with the low mark on the oil dipstick. It literally tells you when to add more. You don't have to watch it like a hawk or anything. You can also just top it up every 3 or 4 gas fill-ups too. In terms of fuel, the ECU is pretty advanced and will manage octane changes well. Mileage isn't terrible but unexpected for a small engine. Frankly, it wasn't shocking to me coming from turbo Subarus which gets about the same as the RX8. Mixed/city driving for me is around 17mpg and highway is around 21mpg, not terrible, not great, not expected for a small 1.3L engine until you kind of understand it's pretty much a 2 stroke and effectively much more like a 2.6L engine when considering ignition strokes. It's the same reason why the small engine makes power of a larger engine. Every rotation is a combustion rotation. It is a glorified 2 stroke engine. One good note is I have not seen mileage get bad with heavy driving. Mileage overall remains pretty consistent overall regardless of how it's being driven. As others have stated, redline it regularly. You don't want to drive it hard while warming up, but once the engine's up to temp, yeah, beat on it. This is an engine that is happy to be driven hard and is better for it. You can't really wreck anything. Also since this is a relatively low torque and high revving engine, you drive it more like a motorcycle than a car, and it may take a little adjustment in the concept of cruising and shifting and much higher rpms than you feel comfortable with.
All she need was the deflood with spark plugs out till mist of old gas is out with the fuel fuse pulled including the eccentric sensor disconnected, once done new spark plugs & LS coils put everything back turn it over and she’s good mines had the same issue started in one try after I followed that procedure
YOU ABSOLUTELY NEED TO REBUILD THE ENGINE BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE Also, if you want it to scream you need to get a turbo kit (also makes it a lot more efficient)
Decat it, they run a lot hotter than a normal engine and it breaks the catalyst down faster than a normal car. Unfortunately when these breaks down they will clog up and cause engine failure. With a decat and a catback these will pop flames without a tune. Smokey exhaust will always be a thing since oil is introduced to the combustion cycle, adding the pre-mix with the oil injectors still working will make it a bit worse. A healthy battery and coils is extra important to the car running. Don't turn it off until it's warmed up, it could flood again. Care and feeding is pretty intensive on these but they are a blast to drive.
I’m trying to get a RX-8 for $2200 but it doesn’t start and has no keys and was an auction car. I’m goin to try to get them to lower it down bc of that issue and hopefully once it’s lowered I can pull what y’all pulled here to see if it starts and if I want it as my project car. I have a Mazda Tribute as my daily so I have time to fix her up! I’m excited! Love y’all’s videos this is the first one I seen and I’m SUBSCRIBED 🔥
Series II didn’t need premixing because of the third oil injector in the rotor housing, fixed lubrication problems from the series I, tidy car though! Love from aus. Fellow RX-8 Owner !!
Nice purchase guys . People were giving you strange looks at the gas station not because of the Tesla but because you tried to shake every drip out of the nozzle lol.
Note, that the pre-mix oil preserves the gasoline . . . keeps it fresh. So, the months and months sitting didn't ruin the gas in the tank and distribution system. That's a good thing.
After sitting you add a few squirts of Transmission fluid in the spark plug holes. The apex seals are stuck. If the apex seals are stuck, it will lose compression.
I recently paid 1800.00 for my 2004 rx8. It was completely dead when we bought it. Someone had connected battery wrong and blew the main fuse. Now after replacing fuse everything works. It starts and runs great.
My 1987 RX-7 had the same problem after having been parked for five months. It took a lot of effort to my "rotary specialist" mechanics to finally get it run...it was unbelievable the amount of gases that my car "farted" out until finally properly ran.
Hey JR Garage i had the same thing with my car and it just would not start. The starter will wear out if you keep trying. The best solution is to tow the car and start it in gear
I also fell in love with the RX8 because of nfs carbon, as a kid I dreamed of having one (me having no knowledge of the car it’s self) now I’m 18 and the kid in me wants to work my ass off to get one
Idemitsu premix ratio is 6.7oz to 13.8 gal of fuel (daily, 1 gal:0.5oz) I saw a flashing CEL so you might want to diagnose and confirm misfires (rebuild time).
where do you get your salvage title inspected ? because I have to wait a month just to make a appointment just to get it inspected & I want my car sooner

Now Get a Miata🥺
An NB coupe lol. That' would finally be a real rare car

Do ls coils! Did it to mine and start ups weren’t a problem.
Something i want to ask. If you dont get spark on the plugg is that the coil?
check vacuum lines and any leaks for the little things
Have a R3 myself but 2jz swapped. The chassis is so nimble and perfect for driving
Great buy!! Good job getting the engine started. Put a complete Racing Beat header and race exhaust system on it.
RX-8 is one of the cars I would love to see straight piped
i have one, it’s pretty fun to drive. spits crazy flames and backfires on basically every decel no matter what rpm lol
Garage tour?
I don't know you guys but I was really happy to hear that the engine finally run 😂
Literally 99% won’t see this but if you do, god bless you, stay safe and have a wonderful day!
Thank you bro!
Same to you brother
I see u in every video
Stfu
Thanks you too
Nice purchase guys . People were giving you strange looks at the gas station not because of the Tesla but because you tried to shake every drip out of the nozzle lol.
So refreshing to see this
Note, that the pre-mix oil preserves the gasoline . . . keeps it fresh. So, the months and months sitting didn't ruin the gas in the tank and distribution system. That's a good thing.
wow i was not expecting an rx8, it looks so cool. The r3 definitly looks better than the first rx8.
Nice video guys!!!! Keep it up!
Yay finally a rotary on the engine can’t wait to see what happens
Well done lads... Awsome content again
After sitting you add a few squirts of Transmission fluid in the spark plug holes. The apex seals are stuck. If the apex seals are stuck, it will lose compression.
18:01 yooo that's from the Philippines!
17:58 that RX8 is the one i saw on a nearby shop at my location. It shoots massive fireballs here in the Philippines haha
I recently paid 1800.00 for my 2004 rx8. It was completely dead when we bought it. Someone had connected battery wrong and blew the main fuse. Now after replacing fuse everything works. It starts and runs great.
Where I can find the Recaro seats and r3 wheels. I want to install them to my 2006 black cosmo
How on earth would a higher octane gas help a rotary to start easier? Lmao
If you want to keep your rotary running premium is a must
It doesn’t unless ur car is specifically tuned for higher octane fuel lmao
@@Mrdubstep484 exactly. Especially a not running rotary is likely to have low compression
Explosion at 1:45 - I spit out my beer
The most hassle of a car I’ve ever owned
Corvette or 944 should be the next giveaway car. Thanks for doing the RX8, nice to see you guys doing cars like this too, much respect.
Where is that Sunoco 101 gas?
My 1987 RX-7 had the same problem after having been parked for five months. It took a lot of effort to my "rotary specialist" mechanics to finally get it run...it was unbelievable the amount of gases that my car "farted" out until finally properly ran.
What happened for the Mercedes c300
Rev line it also sometimes to clear the carbon deposits
The most interesting car startup I seen. Good job guys
Hey JR Garage i had the same thing with my car and it just would not start. The starter will wear out if you keep trying. The best solution is to tow the car and start it in gear
Finally some good UA-camrs that spend there money on making better content
Rob Dahm is smiling
I also fell in love with the RX8 because of nfs carbon, as a kid I dreamed of having one (me having no knowledge of the car it’s self) now I’m 18 and the kid in me wants to work my ass off to get one
what happen to the MB s65?
Did it sling a rod? I heard rotary engines like to bend rods and may have some burnt piston rings.
Definitely straight pipe, cool find
Sounds like apex seals are shot. The trouble starting is the number 1 symptom. If the spark plugs are old hopefully it is just them, fingers crossed.
the internet is undefeated!!! great example of the power of community! 💯🔥💪🏽
Idemitsu premix ratio is 6.7oz to 13.8 gal of fuel (daily, 1 gal:0.5oz)
I saw a flashing CEL so you might want to diagnose and confirm misfires (rebuild time).
where do you get your salvage title inspected ? because I have to wait a month just to make a appointment just to get it inspected & I want my car sooner
Im really stoned and it took the whole episode for me to realize you guys werent twins lmfao
Where did u guys bought the mazda from?
I remember I wanted one in high school so bad❗️😅
I’m in Arizona too! Where is that gas station located? I need some 101 octane!
Reminds me of the good ol days of Need For Speed and F&F Tokyo Drift. Can't wait to see what you guys do to it!
I remember when I didn't want my Rx7 to drop in rpms when starting cause I didn't want it to die and flood. After years I understand how they work
