H/H match update: ... ~~~Today's action: This is one of these rare days where we start right off with a head-to-head match! (Well, after the introductory niceties.) Recapping, our champion had just won $500 in the audience match with Marcia's suggestion as time ran out "yesterday." I found this champion intriguing because he chose different celebs for the audience match his second time around, and I was wondering if that trend would continue with his choice of a head-to-head partner today. (The first time he chose Richard, but they didn't match.) And he chooses... Richard Dawson. This is now King Richard's 32nd consecutive time answering the head-to-head question, and he's been on something of a hot streak lately, having matched 13 of those 32 times so far. Stats: Richard has matched 100 of his 237 most recent attempts (42.2%), 83 of his last 194 attempts (42.8%), 39 of his last 97 attempts (40.2%), and 20 of his last 53 attempts (37.7%). His overall success rate is *41.7%* and this is his 715th attempt so far. For the sake of comparison: Charles has matched 33 of his 69 attempts (47.8%), Brett has matched 30 of her 70 attempts (42.9%), and Richard has matched 298 of his 714 attempts (41.7%). Marcia, Avery, and Barbara have never been chosen to answer a H/H question. *Today's (first) H/H question: "Secretary of________"* (State. This sounds like an easy question. Henry Kissinger was very well-known, and the US Secretary of State from September 22, 1973 to January 20, 1977.) As is typical, Richard decides very quickly. When called upon, the champion quickly and confidently gives the predicted answer, receiving a loud round of applause. Honestly, I can't think of another decent answer, so I have to believe we're about to see another $5,000 match here! Yes, it's unanimous! Richard scores his 299th H/H match today. ~~~~~ A plethora of "Bordellos" (and synonyms) earn our champion his third victory in a fairly quick game. Match Game trivia: The subject of the champion's second-round question, Michael Landon, is of course a "Match Game" alum - what's more, he sat in the first seat on the first week (episodes 1-5), so he was the very first MG celeb that Johnny O ever announced! Michael was even called on twice for the head-to-head, and scored one match! *Today's audience match question: "Take me________"* (My thoughts: Home Country Roads, Out to the Ballgame, Away) The celebs: Avery (Along), Brett (to your leader), Marcia (I'm yours) The choice: Out to the Ballgame (He goes with his own thought this time!) The answers: I'm Yours, Out to the Ballgame, Home Not bad. The celebs came up with only the bottom answer, so his choice was definitely an improvement. Now for his third H/H, I'm sure he'll choose Richard again... Yes, this is now King Richard's 33rd consecutive time answering the head-to-head question, and he's been on something of a hot streak lately, having matched 14 of those 33 times so far. *Note: If he matches this one, it will be Richard's 300th H/H match!* Stats: Richard has matched 101 of his 238 most recent attempts (42.4%), 84 of his last 195 attempts (43.1%), 40 of his last 98 attempts (40.8%), and 21 of his last 54 attempts (38.9%). His overall success rate is *41.8%* and this is his 716th attempt so far. For the sake of comparison: Charles has matched 33 of his 69 attempts (47.8%), Brett has matched 30 of her 70 attempts (42.9%), and Richard has matched 299 of his 715 attempts (41.8%). Marcia, Avery, and Barbara have never been chosen to answer a H/H question. *Today's (second) H/H question: "Thumb's________"* (Well, that apostrophe when Gene spelled out the question sort of throws me for a loop. "Thumbs up" and "thumbs down" both come to mind, but they don't have an apostrophe, at least not according to the Merriam-Webster, Collins, or Cambridge dictionaries. Oh well, I'll just say "Up" and cross my fingers. Spelling has never counted on this show anyway. All that matters is that the two answers match.) The contestant seems to be contemplating. Richard turns to both Marcia and Barbara as if for feedback, and shrugs as he decides to file his card. Gene doesn't even finish asking the question, and the contestant is giving a thumbs down motion. That's his answer. The audience groans and then applauds. Richard looks bemused, shaking his head and smiling at Marcia. Will Richard score his 300th H/H match today? "Up." - Dang, not today, maybe tomorrow... No H/H match this time. ~~~Now here's our updated leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy: (An asterisk before a celebrity's name signifies that she has "retired" from the show and her H/H stats are now complete.) (For tied scores, I consider the one with the greater number of matches to be higher; if the matches are equal, the celeb who first achieved that score goes on top.) Orson Bean - 100% (4 wins in 4 attempts). TIE: (*)Jo Anne Worley - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). TIE: Joyce Bulifant - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). Gary Burghoff - 71.4% (5 wins in 7 attempts). Brett - 42.9% (30 wins in 70 attempts). Richard - 41.8% (299 wins in 716 attempts). Bert Convy - 33.3% (5 wins in 15 attempts). *These stats include every head-to-head match from episode 1 through 1068, excluding the missing/damaged/unavailable episodes: 31, 32, 33, 311, 312, 313, 324, 325, 645, 910, 1024, 1025, 1026, 1027, 1028, 1029, and 1030. *Also, note that episode 849 was never produced. (These stats do, however, include the H/H results of missing episode 968 as those results were revealed in episode 969. Note: There was no H/H in missing episode 1035, as we learn in 1036.)
I just randomly clicked on this...and BOOM Barbara Rhoades...I fell in love with her when I was a young kid seeing her in the Shakiest Gun in the West. I never knew what her name was and the second I saw her here I knew who she was...strange I was all of 6 yrs old when that movie came out.

So Gene spelled the Super-Match question, "T-H-U-M-B apostrophe S" (which could mean either, "thumb is" or "belongs to the thumb"). The contestant answered, "Thumbs down". There's no apostrophe in "Thumbs down" (unless you're saying, "The thumb is down", which no one has ever said.
I beg to differ. I believe people have said "the thumb is down." There's a game we used to play in school called 7 UP. Seven students stand in front of the class while the others keep their eyes closed and heads down on the desk with a thumb up. The seven walk around touching the thumbs of those seated and the thumbs go down. Then the seated kids try to guess who put their thumb down after everyone is picked. During play, an opportunity may rise for someone to say "the thumb is down."
@@pencils812 - Well... I think by this stage of the culture, Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel were famously rating movies "Two-thumbs up" or "Two Thumbs down." Seriously. It’s one thing when they’re synonyms, but totally another when they’re unrelated. He should be bound by the same rules as the contestant, whereby only the first answer given of multiples is the one that counts.
I've watched every existing episode of Match Game in order and this is the first one I have ever seen where a woman gives Gene some push back on his pervy behavior (a little after 18:20). Wow, his response is very telling; he withdraws and pouts. I know you all think the behavior of him and Richard is "harmless" but I am not sure how you know that is true. I am going to be interested in seeing if anyone else, celebrity or contestant, is less than thrilled with their hijinks going forward. I have always wondered what would happen if the "new kid on the block" kiss ever gets refused by a panelist. If it did, I wonder if that ever would have made it on the air. I guess time (and a lot more episodes ahead) will possibly give me the answer.
