Your assessment of the feel is exactly what I felt. I think this is great for Altra runners wanting to get back to feeling a drop or drop shoes wearers of other brands want to try the Altra shaped shoe.
I do love Altra and this drop version may well bring me back to them for longer runs. Currently loving the rivera's for easy runs up to c.8-10km. Durability, as ever, is another problem they have - both outsole and upper, seem to fall apart. Funny the HOKA comparison you make, exact same issues. However, i keep going back because i love the toe shape and had been eyeing up Topo as an alternative purely because of a drop shoe allowing me to run for longer with the footshaped shoe.
Been an Altra fan since day one. It's always a good idea to mix up the heel drops to help prevent repetitive injuries commonly associated with running. Will be adding this to my next shoe rotation.
Nice review thanks , not sure what Altra will bring to the table beyond what other bring now they are moving closer to a general style model of cushoined shoe. But we shall see.
I love my zero drop Altra. I mainly run trails but have my first marathon next year. I’m a heavy 6’4” 102kg slow plodder lol. Would you think these would be ok for a heavy first time marathon run? I’m only a few months into running as well so definitely a beginner..
Altras lineup is getting so weird. Escalante which was supposed to be super low, is now closer to the old Rivera, Torin was supposed to be high cushion but now this and the Via Olympus exist (even though the Torin is $10USD more than this is with less stack). The brand is built off the original and standard foot shape toe-boxes but none of the performance options (Vanish series) are those, they're slim fit. Now they have 4mm drop, and have put rockers in most of their zero drop shoes.
I had two Altra's, Torin and Escalante. Each for a different purpose. They are my go to shoes now. But I added the 4WD because my race shoes are 4mm drop. I do feel a difference between 4mm drop and 0 mm drop and needed to train in 4mm drop shoe. The 4WD will be in the rotation as I try to get back to drop shoes.
Feels they are completely back pedalling on their values and philosophy. They used to be great but feels like they've lost it. Look at the evolution of the escalante...
I call this the Porsche paradox. All enthusiasts want a manual Porsche Everyone who buys one, buys an automatic. Maybe the market for zero drop is just to small to be profitable. Same with the toebox shapes, not everyone needs a super wide box, so they sell different versions. If this model sells good and opens finds for even better zero drop shoes, I would say this is a smart move.
yes as @circedge said , and they have been slowly drifting into other area's for the last 14 months .. myself I replaced my last pair of escalente racers with the Cyclone 2's this time around, as I believe Topo is producing more of an evolution to the original altra's (also low drop rather then no drop .. but if you try them you will get my meaning )
@@lyrilljackson Take a natural foot shape, swap the knit for a slightly lighter upper, replace the low stack EVA with low stack Pebax and you have something that is close to the same ride but improved (especially at the kick or when the legs get heavy) . It is an improvement of what I believe was the same concept. Since buying it my puma liberate nitro's have been gathering dust in the garage (and my racers have gone to the sally army )
Another shoe I don't need to buy. Thanks for the great review!
Natural shaped toebox isn't funky looking- it's a thing of beauty

cheers for taking the time to review these

At this point a comparison between Altra Torin 7 and the Altra FWD is a must
I'll give you a preview - Torin is softer with the egomax 30mm mid and less rockered.
@@LancePeterman makes sense
This is great. I’ll get a pair. I love the Torin and Vanish Tempo. I’d like to compare this to my Torin 7’s.
Is it much softer than the Via Olympus? thanks

Waiting for the Brooks Ghost Max next :)
Is this a neutral shoe or is this for overpronation? Can't find anything about it.

Shoes look great. Similar to Pegasus but better with a cut tail.
Seems like it’s similar to the Hoka Rincon

How on earth are you able to run a zero drop at the size without destroying your legs/achilles??

Thanks. Upper looks too thick and warm.
Feels like this new shoe has the Hoka Clifton and Topo Phantom square in its sights, but this is a pretty crowded space.
Sigh, i love zero drop, hopefully they dont ruin the olympus
thats interesting that altra r moving away from their niche 0 mm drop
Ya they look pretty similar to Cliftons

Finds=Funds
That's what usually happens when a company is sold, twice now in Altras case. The original owners are long gone. New owners, new marketing ideas.
It’s simple, Altra lied and zero drop is not better for most everyone.
@@GTE_Channeldifference is that doesn’t make Porsche liars it does however make Altra liars.
just repeating yourself for 6 mins
A Topo copy 😅
I think they lost the plot.. Did some giant company buy them out ❓
That was a while ago. I think VF, that also own The North Face and others.
