I like a lot of stuff on your list. I already have the new sielunvihollinen on cd but after watching this i went and ordered the vinyl. I didnt even know there was a vinyl until recent. They also had kuolonkylvaja on vinyl so i made sure order that even though i have that cd too. Cool list man.
Great top and now I realise I missed some of the potential greatest discs from 2023 like Marduk or Vomitory... I included some black Metal bands into my top, even if they are not purely black Metal : Enterré Vivant (from France/Japan), amazing and unique album ! Also Moonlight Sorcery and Hellriper.
I really liked the Immortal album aswell (and was suprised by it tbh). Also really enjoyed the Gromoverzh debut, not sure if you're at all into Pagan metal but it hits the right spot for me even as someone who isn't a fan of the genre.
@@RautaMetal Solo project with some session work, Strings is known for the music he did for Temnozor, Walknut and some other projects more then a decade ago. Lots of flute but I kinda dig it.
I have not heard any of the releases of your list in full, just a track or two with some of the bands. Am of course familiar with most of the bands but don't use Spotify or any kind of streaming service except UA-cam. And watch mostly live stuff there. Am only listening to physical media, Cd, Tape and Vinyl, and already have enough music to be set for life. Anyhow i bought two 2023 releases and both are great, so i got a top two.. 1: Noitila - Langennut 2: Cruel Force - Dawn Of The Ax Cheers 🤘🍻
All these picks of mine are of course based on physical releases. Cruel Force - Dawn of the Axe should be added to the expanded list. Noitila I heard briefly but didn't make to my list.
I just checked out the Sorcerer album and my mind is blown. There isn't a single bad song on this album. Normally I listen to music while I'm doing things but this album commanded my attention. I had to stop what I was doing and got lost in the music. Epic!
My list would be very similar to yours with the addition of Ruïm - Black Royal Spiritism (by Blasphemer of Aura Noir, ex-Mayhem), Thy Darkened Shade - Liber Lucifer II and Varathron - The Crimson Temple. I must check that Sorcerer album out as I am expecting some Messiah Marcolin era Candlemass level of epic doom metal.
Nice. Can't say I have heard the ones you said, but often a lot of promos go under my radar. And yet I have too many albums to listen to all the time. Weird paradox.
@@RautaMetal Totally understandable considering the fact that you are constantly bombarded by promo copies from all possible directions - even very small labels and self-released stuff :D
Ahhh, Sorcerer. Here's a story - I'm not very much into Therion, probably heard just a very few of their newer tracks since mid 2000s, but I remember the killer opening track from Secret of the Runes. I think that it's been one of their best songs since Theli or so. Just some cleverly placed riffs with some adequate tempo changes... point being, that it was one of the few songs written by the guitarist Kristian who actually is in Sorcerer. Coincidence? I don't think so.
1. Clandestine Blaze - Resacralize the Unknown 2. Thy Darkened Shade - Liber Lvcifer II: Mahapralaya 3. Marduk - Memento Mori 4. Terrestrial Hospice - Caviary to the General 5. Genocide Organ & Prurient - Carte Blanche 6. Abigor - Taphonomia Aeternitatis - Gesänge im Leichenlicht der Welt (I haven't heard it yet, but I have no doubts about the quality) 7. Depeche Mode - Memento Mori I could add Akitsa's and Sielunvihollinen's albums as honorable mentions.
Hahaha, I know you're not serious, but my reasoning was that Alan Averill made Morissey's "Bonfire of the Teenagers" his number 1, which hasn't even been released yet. At least Abigor's album was released, albeit late. Cheers! @@RautaMetal
I kinda am, because I would never add an album to my list without hearing and actually listening to it. But ofc ppl can make their lists as they please 😎
Ulv, ulv - da er det helt annen klasse over Ulvehyrde! Sadly, Ulvehyrde did not release anything in 2023, but back in 2021. Love the album "Englemakersken" ...

This is your most death metal year (I think) Last Saturday in the chat we were talking about good pagan black metal bands. I consider Norrhem to be one of them or at least related to this subgenre because of these themes. A good band. Question for you Jerry, I made a compilation video to promote real pagan black metal and folk black metal bands, bands that are really BM bands with pagan themes without falling into cheesy pagan metal. If I send you the link could you tell me what you think of it and if there are any bands that speak to you or that you know of. However, I can't send you the link in the comments, the UA-cam algorithm will think it's a spam message.
Yeah, this is very good in terms of death metal. Norrhem is def more on the pagan side of things as opposed to Satanic bands. Can you just send me the names of the bands as text instead of a video?

Thank you for talking about Neceoticgorebeast! Got to see them live earlier in 2023. They're amazing!
My pleasure. Good band!
I need to check out that Sorcerer album. Heavy Metallurgy did a great discussion about it on their album club series. Cheers Rauta!
Terrestrial Hospice🤘 and Clandestine Blaze🤘-> nice!!
my favs, worth checking:
Sodality - benediction part I
Urfaust - Untergang
Selbstmord - WarSign

Nice. Can't say I've heard Gromoverzch. Pagan metal as such, nothing against it. It all depends on the individual band.

Vastum and Dodheimsgard were my favorites
Hey Rauta, will you review the new Clandestine Blaze album?
Greetings from Germany
If I get the cd, of course
Cruciamentum, Sulphur Aeon, Dying Fetus and Disguised Malignance fucking killed it for me in 2023!!
💀🤘💀🤘💀🤘
Sulphur Aeon is on my review list, still, but DF was a disappointment for me.
My favs: King Gizzard, Jessie Ware, Maruja.
I had to rewind the part where he said black horse, I heard something else XD
😀
Interesting list! I thought "Therizo" by Taubra, and "As in Gardens, So in Tombs" by ...and Oceans were excellent black metal albums too.
Taubra I haven’t heard, but And Oceans was a contender
My Top 3 is: Tanith, Sorcerer and Overkill
Guts-decay so fucking awesome rotten finnish dm masterpiece and moonlight sorcery do it great finnish bm these my faves 2 albums🤘🤔
Unfortunately Guts was a bit boring to me.

Dodheimsgard was pretty nice, but maybe too avant-garde for me still. Thy Catafalque, too.
Kaevum and Sünhopfer the best ones.
Haven't heard their new albums, but at least in the past Sühnopfer was way too jolly melodic for me.
No taake.. i am suprised.
Unfortunately it didn’t make it.
