  • In this QUAH Sal, Adam, & Justin answer the question “Do I have to hit abs directly for every full-body workout or can I rely on compound lifts like deadlifts and squats to work the core? And just work out my abs directly once a week?”

Studies actually show that squats don’t activate the abs much, jeff nippard went into detail about this. But I’m still not doing abs.

The Rectus abdominal muscle should be the last piece of muscle considered to be trained in the abdomen area.

I just rely on stabilization, any type of flexing or twising of the spine is a no go for me. Farmers carry, tire flips, squats, deadlifts are my only ab workouts. They may not be visible, but they are dense.

Those compound movements are mostly isometric or shortened contraction for the abs. You need to use an ab machine or an exercise that applies load to the abs in their lengthened position to get full range of motion just as with any other muscle groups. The abs are a muscle. Work them like any other muscle with progressive overload and they will get bigger.

I do believe this isn't so simple. I like to compare this case to biceps, triceps, forearms and calves. If you are already doing bunch of volume for pulling and pushing movements, you do not need extra arm work. If you already are doing exercised which either via stabilization or direct activation engages calves, such as squats and knee flexion(since gastrocnemius flexes the knee joint also), then you don't need extra calf work. So in the same manner if you are already doing bunch of multi-joint movements and DO engage proactively the abnominal muscles, then you don't necessarily need extra abnominal work.
I personally don't do extra abs work. I do believe one or two ab exercises would be beneficial but not these 10 billion ones you see on trendy, false programs.

Like any other muscle, if you want bigger “muscle here” then you do direct work for it. If you’re happy with where your abs are at, feel free to skip direct abs if that’s what you want

It's kinda hard to train abs when I can't see them. Coach Greg Doucette said that abs are to be trained when you are around the 25% bf range because if you are slimming down, the body is slowly adjusting and it's hard to train something you can't see

@The Urban Nerd thanks for sending the vid but i didnt see him claim u shouldnt train abs unless you can see them. Ive heard coach greg state before that u dont need to train abs bc u hit them as stabilizers in other lifts but i strongly disagree with that as well and i think its something that steroid users say and they dont realize its bc of the steroids that they need to avoid training abs to avoid over thickening them.
