There will never be another like Garbo..She was a one off so different from all the other MGM Stars..She just wanted to be left alone and create the magic on the screen with her breathtaking beauty and her amazing acting.
"Innocent little Robert Montgomery" cracks me up! He was always such a darling stinker in his roles. I absolutely love his performances. As for a Garbo-Montgomery pair up, what could be better?!! I didn't know about the film "Inspiration" until this beautiful UA-cam posting. Thank you, AccidentalVixen!! Warm wishes from Northern California! :)
she was the ultimate movie star and probably always will be - thank God what was captured on film still in part exists - the last unicorn - when she fell asleep Manhattan lost a great portion of its sparkle !
The irony is that Garbo (26 years old) was actually a year younger then Robert Montgomery (27 years old) was. Greta Garbo received great reviews for her performance, which I must agree. She was at her most luminous here.
your information is very valuable - whoever cast the picture either wantled her body mass to overwhelm his , or made a mistake - the duologue is stunning ! as far as her being at her most luminous , she was always alluring , she was always at her most alluring you ! always luminous ! there will never be another !
I've yet to see this film. I've seen every other one, even Susan Lenox with Gable. I do not understand why all her films aren't available readily?! Who is holding out? TCM could solve it with a 3 day Garbo marathon. It really bugs me. Garbo is my favorite famous anybody of all time. The only celebrity, living or dead, I'd want to know. No one was like her. The most beautiful person ever filmed. Everything about her was exquisite. Garbos silent films are the best example of screen acting I can think of

I have a short biography of Garbo. One of the items he sites is that during the making of this film Robert Montgomery showed signs of getting interested in Garbo in more than just the making of the film. To discourage him, she is said to have put a clove of garlic under tongue for the love scenes.
That's not Robert Montgomery, that's Fredric March with whom she co-starred in Anna Karenina. She did chew garlic to put him off because she had heard things about March. And March was not interested in her at all, she was not his type.
@@KTR2022 Apparently, Robert Montgomery often refused to talk about the film; he and Garbo didn't get along. Not sure why, but apparently she embarrassed him in front of the crew, and he never forgot that.
@@Muirmaiden Well, if that's true then she did good. Montgomery was quite unpleasant if Lauren Bacall is to be believed. Garbo could easily spot them lol.
@@KTR2022 Garbo didn't like the film or her role, and she clashed with director Clarence Brown throughout. It may not have had anything to do with Montgomery personally, she just didn't want to be there and gave him the cold shoulder. Cagney said that Montgomery was "a true hero".
@@Muirmaiden I don't know about his "hero" status but what he did to Lauren Bacall when she was a newcomer to Hollywood was really nasty (if she is to be believed and I don't see any reason why not) and besides, he had a terrible relationship with his daughter Elizabeth Montgomery and I fully empathise with her on this. All in all, I think he had an ambiguous reputation, very much like Henry Fonda who was 'heroic' but still described as a very cold and harsh man even by his daughter. I do see many similarities between both men.

What is the background tune?
The background tune is called 'How long will it last' You can hear it on here (UA-cam) sung by Bing Crosby MBM96
Daydreamer: Joan Crawford also sang it in the 1931 film Possessed with Clark Gable. "How Long Will It Last."@@Daydreamertoo
And, she sang it really nicely too. And, there’s a copy of Bing Crosby on here singing the whole song.too. It’s a sad, romantic song. Lovely. :)
