Karen Akers! WOW!! A truly underrated talent in my opinion. I have all of her CDs ( not enough) and am so happy to find this video on UA-cam. Been trying to find for years and years her video from Wolf Trap.Does anyone know if it's available?
@rhonesilva -- Click the box at the end of the text, below the screen, and the information expands. I've written a detailed post about Karen, NINE, and that Tommy did, indeed, direct the show, and I, in fact, directed this particular performance at the 2004 Theatre World Awards. I like to provide as much info as possible about my videos; performers, songwriters, et cetera, and I'm happy when others do the same. You can find out all sorts of fascinating stuff! Enjoy! Best, Walter Willison
I'm afraid only Karen and Maury know the answer to your question -- but I have a feeling it was altered years ago! Try writing her on her website . . . I'm sure she'll also appreciate knowing how much you enjoyed the performances. And I have to agree, she just keeps getting better and better and better! Best, WW
@pantowriter -- Absolutely. When a song is written especially for you, as this was written for Karen, you own it, and it eventually just becomes part of you and evolves over time. No singer should ever be a metronome and no good composer worth his salt would ever want them to be, certainly not Maury. Listen to any great singer singing songs they are most identified with when they first introduced them and then later in their careers and you will always hear them evolve. Best, WW
The first lines in the first two verses in "My Husband Makes Movies", she sings a different tune than she did on the original cast album. I'm curious as to why she chose to do that. But these performances are amazing! She's still got it!
@0203Patrickb -- How clumsy of me. In my haste I must have added all the various honors to my total. Indeed, NINE received 12 Tony Award nominations and won 5 Tony Awards. Thanks for the correction!
@BLACKPYTHON I think after singing it so many times she's just putting a fresh spin on the song. Most of the melody belongs to the original song just not in the position we're familiar with.
Karen Akers is one of the true hidden gems of the musical theatre. This performance, particularly "Be On Your Own," is absolutely spellbinding.
i love her voice and i always have. i love how direct she has become as a singer as she has gotten older.
Simply stunning....it brings me back to the 46th Street Theater and wonderful memories of this flawless show.....
I've been a fan of Karen Akers since the early 80s when I first saw Presenting Karen Akers on PBS. She is absolutely amazing.
I discovered "be on your own" this summer and I listened all day long.

She is all that and more! Glad you enjoyed this clips!
Thanks.

She was the BEST wife in all the versions including the new movie.

My pleasure, I assure you.

@mzmiller52 didn't Tommy Tune also direct Nine?
As much as I enjoyed this, I feel I must make a correction. The show won 5 Tony awards, not 10.
no mention of "grand hotel"??? boy, i sure wish
tommy tune directed the movie. what a bastardization
of a wonderful theatrical experience.
